Today was a great day for the City of Methuen because @massgovernor was here for o announce that the city will be receiving the Community Developement Block Grant (CDBG). This federal program helps eligible cities and towns meet a broad range of community development needs in housing, infrastructure, revitalization, economic development, and public social services.
Thank you to the whole Methuen delegation for the hard work you put into this city. This is government at its best, because we have the local government, the state government, and the federal government all working together to ensure the betterment of our community.
Today I had the opportunity to visit the Canal Antique Mall in Lawrence alongside my colleague @christina4rep
Since the growth of the Film and Television industry in Massachusetts, the Canal Antique Mall has become a one stop shop for props and other set materials used in these shows and movies.
It’s interesting to learn about the importance of this small business to the much larger film and television industry; and the best part is that it is located right here in the City of Lawrence!
Thrilled to join my colleagues of the Lawrence delegation- Senator Finegold, Representative Minicucci, and Representative Devers- for a check presentation today to Federación Hispana de Comerciantes. Our delegation was able to secure $20,000 in this year’s state budget for the organization, and I know that the money will be well spent as they continue to do the important work of community development. Our budget successes were numerous this year as we continue to fight for the people of Lawrence at the State House.
Shortly after 4:15pm on September 13, 2018, the City of Lawrence and the towns of North Andover and Andover experienced a series of gas explosions and fires, which caused over 120 fires, and leading to the evacuation of over 30,000 residents from the areas affected. Today, exactly one year removed, we remember this chaotic and frantic moment as the Merrimack Valley Gas Explosions.
Today, Governor Baker, Lt. Governor Polito, Mayor River, legislatures from the Merrimack Delegation, and myself came together in Lawrence to honor the life of Leonel Rondon. A young man who lost his life on this tragic day. His family and peers described Leonel as a bright, charismatic, caring, and ambitious young man; with plans of buying a new car and going to college.
As we dedicate this square in memory of Leonel, let us not forget this tragic event in our history. But also, let us continue to grow as a community. Our resiliency and strength during, and after, the gas explosions show the true character of the Merrimack Valley. Let us continue to work together, learn together, and grow together.
I am always in awe of all the hard work and community organization that the Methuen Arlington Neighborhood Association Inc puts into the City of Methuen.
It is my honor to serve the community alongside them, and to help in all the capacities I can. I look forward to our continued partnership in helping to support the residents of the Methuen Arlington neighborhood.
📢🏀Due to weather concerns, our third annual basketball tournament originally scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed until Saturday, September 28th. I look forward to seeing you all on the 28th! If the weather does not cooperate on the 28th, our backup date will be the following day on the 29th 📢🏀
It was my honor to join @massltgov today at the @bgclawrence as part of her RESPECTfully campaign. This campaign aims to promote healthy relationships among middle and high school students.
I am glad to see the positive effects already happening within our district. Thank you for all the work you do @massltgov
Another wonderful night celebrating @actlawrence in the books! Tonight I was fortunate to join for the Summer Youth Program graduation. It’s always a pleasure to interact with young people participating in these programs, and I’m very thankful for the work ACT Lawrence does to prepare them for their futures. Congratulations to all of the graduates! 🎓
I am excited to announce that my 3rd annual basketball tournament will be held on Saturday, September 7th from 10am-2pm at the O’Neil Basketball Courts. This event aims to promote and improve positive relationships between the youth of our city and the Lawrence Police Department. This is a great opportunity to gather with fellow community members, meet your local police officers, and highlight these talented athletes. I hope to see you there! 🏀
One of my favorite things about summer is gathering folks for our annual ice cream socials. I had a wonderful time this afternoon at the Lawrence Senior Center discussing the issues important to these residents, and all of the work we’re engaged in at the legislature to support our elder communities over a few scoops of ice cream. I hope to see you at one soon!
All Veterans Service Officers and veterans organizations, please attend the upcoming SNAP 101 for Veterans Organizations training on Tuesday, August 20th at 280 Merrimack St in Lawrence. We all owe a debt to our veterans, and this is a great opportunity to ensure you’re familiar with how to access a great program assisting those in need. Please RSVP in advance.
I had a great time hosting the students from the @actlawrence program today at the State House. Students were able to partake in a tour of the State House, and I was also able to join them for a pizza lunch. Thank you to the @actlawrence program for all the amazing work that they do in the Lawrence community.
Thrilled to share our FY20 budget victories for the 17th Essex District. It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to fight for our community and so many worthy organizations each year during the budget process. Thank you to my colleagues for all of your support!
This weekend marked the annual MerrimackVolley International Grass 🏐 tournament. In addition to addressing the team’s from Boston, Florida, and the Dominican Republic among others, I was presented with a plaque for my contribution to the community. I’m humbled by this gesture, and thankful I get to fight for the city and community that raised me each day. Congratulations to all of the participating athletes from near and far!
Thrilled to join @nhlbruins mascot Blades for a summer reading event in Andover today. Senator @barry.finegold and I had a blast with children at the Memorial Hall Library as we participated in story and craft time while also lending a hand during trivia. It’s key that we promote reading, particularly during the summer learning gap, for kids across our community as they grow into the future leaders of our cities and towns. Thanks for having me!
