Moana Ghiandoni Profile Information

A Cape vulture (Gyps coprotheres) at Kruger National Park, South Africa. These bird are long-lived carrion-feeders specialising on large carcasses. The species has been declining steadily since the 80s and is now listed as Endangered with about 9,000 left in the wild. Despite ongoing conservation efforts and awareness programmes, the relationship between vultures and humans is very vulnerable and these birds have to deal with poisoning, electrocution or collision with cables on electricity pylons, loss of foraging habitat and land transformation.

A yawning crabeater seal (Lobodon carcinophagus) resting on an iceberg in Antarctica. This is the most abundant seal species on the planet and its success is due to its specialised predation on Antarctic krill. Despite its name, this pinniped does not eat crabs and the scientific name refers to the uniquely adapted sieve-like teeth that can filter small crustacean preys.

A Southern tree agama (Acanthocercus atricollis) at @krugernationalpark , South Africa. These reptiles are diurnal insectivores that live in colonies where males defend territories and engage in combat. Males display blue colouration during breeding season, when feeding and at the hottest time of the day. Due to their scaling, colours can change very quickly.

Happy Penguin Awareness Day V 2.0! A gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) stands with its chick in Antarctica. These flightless birds are the fastest-swimming penguins in the world, reaching speeds of up to 36 km/h. They can live about 15-20 years and over 600,000 gentoo penguins are estimated to remain in the wild. This species is the least abundant on the sub-Antarctic islands.

Happy Penguin Awareness Day! While 7 of the 18 extant species of penguins can be found in Antarctica, overfishing and rising temperatures could see some species pushed to the brink of extinction by the end of the century. It’s our responsibility to minimise our impact on the planet and protect these vulnerable flightless birds.

A Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) chilling in the hot springs at Jigokudani, Japan. These are the most northerly non-human primates and a recent study found that bathing in the hot springs can help reduce their stress levels. Also, they can maintain their body temperature by growing longer and thicker fur during winter.

Here’s a portrait of Pudding. I met this playful (and incredibly beautiful) Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) at the Cat Survival Trust here in the UK. This feline is the largest of its species and the widest ranging cat in the world. It was once on the brink of extinction but conservation work has allowed populations to bounce back though habitat loss and illegal hunting still pose a threat.

Munching away... And yes, autumn colours!!! 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁
Grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) do not hibernate as they do not have the capacity to store the necessary energy to survive throughout the winter. What do they do instead? They sleep. A lot. And when they get really hungry they leave their warm drey and search for the food they buried/stored during the summer. Squirrel life.

Head close-up of an arrow-marked babbler (Turdoides jardineii). These birds are monogamous, co-operative breeders and females generally lay a clutch of 3-5 eggs that hatch after an incubation period of about 2 weeks. Nests are sometimes parasitised by Levaillant’s cuckoos (Clamator levaillantii). #arrowmarkedbabbler #babbler #bird #birdwatching #krugernationalpark #ornithology #nikon #birdistheword #birdsofafrica #birdsonearth @bbcearth @bbcspringwatch #moanaghiandoni #birds_perfection #wildlifephotography #ilcp_photographers #southafrica #earthcapture #feathered #feather_perfection #birdwatching #birds.nature #zoologistinthemaking @birdsofsouthafrica

Time for a splash! This cutie is a yellow-fronted canary (Crithagra mozambica), a passerine bird in the finch family. Preening and regular bathing help birds maintain an optimum amount of oil on their feathers.
