“I was scared to admit I’ve dealt with mental health conditions in the past - anxiety in particular - but now I know there is no shame in that. I have no issue putting my hand up saying this is something I support because it’s something I’ve had to deal with.

The biggest thing in my life is my wife and kids. When they’re older and hear about Beyond Blue, I want them to know that their dad supports them and that they can contact them if they need to.

Raising money for Beyond Blue is great, but we feel raising awareness and having the conversation is just as important”.
▫️
Chris and his mates, Michael and Corey, have done Tough Mudder before, but this year they are taking on their first ‘Toughest Mudder’ – a 12-hour obstacle course consisting of 8km laps and more than 18 obstacles – in support of Beyond Blue. 💪💪💪
▫️
They chose to support Beyond Blue because they have lost friends to suicide and have themselves experienced anxiety and depression.
▫️
Chris says that exercise and spending time with family and friends is a really big part of maintaining good mental health. Tough Mudder combines the two: with a supportive team environment to keep you going out on course!
▫️ Get behind Chris, Michael and Corey as they get muddy for mental health! Hit the link in our bio to visit their fundraising page. #toughmudder

Greater Western Sydney ruckman Tom Downie was 22, with a career as an AFL footballer ahead of him, when he was diagnosed with anxiety.
▫️
Early on he didn’t tell anyone at the club and avoided speaking openly about his mental health. When he didn’t feel well enough to train he would sit on the sidelines blaming a sore hip. Partly because he wasn’t sure how to explain it, and partly because he feared the negative backlash not just from within the club but also from the media.
▫️
Tom began seeing a psychiatrist and trialling different medications. Early results were positive, though he realised that there would be no cure or quick fix, that this was something that would need to be continually managed.
▫️
But his anxiety began to worsen, to the extent that Tom started having suicidal thoughts. He explains ‘[it] was not so much wanting to die, more that I wanted the pain to end and I was just so tired’.
▫️
Having since told the club, in May of 2017 Tom retired from the AFL after much consideration. Despite his earlier fears, his teammates and coaches were very supportive of him and of the difficult decision he had made.
▫️
Retiring was naturally a big change, but it was one that helped Tom to get better. ‘My whole life had been focused on sport,’ he says, ‘… so it was scary to step away from an opportunity most people can only dream of. But it was the right decision for me. My mental wellbeing was more important than a shiny career that was making me anxious’.
▫️
Tom now manages his mental health by going to the gym most days, eating well, getting good sleep and surrounding himself with good people – family, friends and his girlfriend. Today he talks freely about the experience:
▫️
‘One of the best things about my journey is that I didn’t have to go through all this pain for nothing. I get to help others through sharing my own story… I have learnt the importance of being proactive about your mental health, taking it seriously and managing it’.
▫️
That’s why Tom is running in the Melbourne Marathon this weekend – to help promote good mental health. Hit the link in our bio to support Tom and all of  #teambeyondblue this Sunday.
