Hay un montón de teorías, leyendas y mitos en torno a la práctica de Yoga durante los días de menstruación. Siempre se habla de todo lo que NO PODEMOS HACER. ¿Por qué nadie nos habla de lo que sí podemos hacer? ¿De aquello que nos puede hacer bien? .

Soy Ángela, soy profesora de yoga, y hace 4 años me acerqué al autoconocimiento a través del ciclo menstrual. Por aquel entonces, ya llevaba 6 años practicando yoga y 2 años siendo profesora, así que mi interés sobre cómo la práctica de yoga puede incidir y ayudar a nuestro ciclo menstrual (y viceversa) fue inmediata. En este tutorial de andar por casa, encontrarás 10 minutos de teoría, razones para moverte y cuidarte, junto con otros aspectos que puedes tener en cuenta a la hora de practicar respetando tus ritmos cíclicos. Después encontrarás una práctica con varias propuestas que puedes hacer juntas o por separado, en los días de menstruación. .

Lo sé, a lo mejor son días en los que no te apetece apenas moverte. Pero si con dolor seguimos produciendo, ¿por qué no vas a moverte y hacer algo también por ti? .
.
Como explico en el vídeo, sé que ya hay información en internet sobre asanas más restaurativas indicadas para los días de regla, pero me gustaría que valoraras el valor de la respiración, el movimiento y por supuesto, la quietud. El patrón (por llamarlo de alguna forma) de la respiración y el movimiento está inspirado en el planteamiento de Vinyasa Krama, pero me gustaría aclararte que no es una secuencia obtenida del sistema de Vinyasa Krama transmitido por Srivatsa Ramaswami. .

Deseo que este tutorial pueda ayudarte a comprender un poquito mejor las implicaciones de tu ciclo, que tu práctica sea tu aliada y por supuesto, que hagas tuya esta experiencia. .

Últimamente muchos me habéis llamado valiente, algunos afortunada, otros loca, esta última probablemente sea la definición más acertada 🤣

Para los que no sabéis de que estoy hablando os pongo en antecedentes: dejé mi casa y el trabajo, la ciudad en la que me encontraba muy a gusto y mis amigos para junto a mi pareja perseguir nuestro sueño - dar la vuelta al mundo.

Y si os soy sincera este cambio no es que me de miedo, me da vértigo. Pero a pesar de ello, me lanzo a la aventura porque sé que la vida son dos días y que hay que vivirla tal y como te nace desde el estomago. Además confío en que cuando aprendes a soltar y das el primer pasito el universo te sonríe.

Digo esto porque yo ya lo viví: sentí el mismo vértigo cuando dejé la casa de mis padres para mudarme sola a España donde no conocía a nadie; cuando siendo una persona tremendamente introvertida me presenté por primera vez en una sala de yoga llena de alumnos expectantes... Por eso, hoy sé que escucharse a uno mismo y hacerle caso a la intuición merece muuucho la pena a pesar del miedo.

Algunos me habéis escrito compartiendo vuestras historias de cómo el miedo os paraliza u os impide romper con la rutina y vivir vuestros sueños.

Por esto he decidido compartir mi método kamikaze 🙈 Lo que hago es atarme una piedra al tobillo y tirarme a la piscina. Cómo podéis ver es muy fácil y sobretodo muy efectivo 🤣

Ahora en serio, las veces que me he encontrado en una situación en la que me he sentido estancada, he tomado un buen sorbo de aire y he empujado la primera ficha de dominó: compraba pasajes, renunciaba al trabajo, presentaba los papeles para la universidad
5 minutos después sentía sudor frío pero ya no había marcha atrás.

No esperes a que el miedo se pase porque si no te enfrentas a él, este momento nunca llegará.

Cómo siempre, espero que os sirvan de algo mis historias!

Ok, Urdhva Mukha Svanasana or Upward Facing Dog, here we go. As I mentioned in earlier posts in this series, this is a challenging pose which I only advise working on once you are comfortable in full Cobra. If you look closely you’ll see that my legs are completely off the mat and I am balancing on my hands and the tops of my feet. I’m following all the cues from Cobra about not slumping down into my shoulders and keeping my heels to the sky rather than rolling out, but the most important things to watch out for here are 1) not ‘dumping’ into the lower back and 2) not throwing the head back. To do that I need to keep my lower belly - the TA muscles - engaged by lifting my pubic bone towards my lower ribs and thinking ‘zip up my jeans’ - that keeps my lower back supported. I also picture a loooooong spine with the curve equally distributed so that I don’t hurl my neck back. You can look up without cranking your neck - eyeballs roll, that’s the cool thing about them! 😊🙄 If your elbows hyperextend, put a micro bend in them to make sure you’re not ‘hanging out’ in the ligaments.

It’s typical to just pass through Cobra and UpDog during a vinyasa, but they are powerful asana in their own right and I highly advocate spending the time to find the optimal alignment for YOUR body - remember, we align for the body, not for the pose! - and spending several breaths here enjoying the uplift and expansion! 🙏

The Headstand is considered as the “King of All Asanas “ and comes packed with amazing health and mental benefits ranging from improved brain function , calming the nervous system , alleviating stress and anxiety to increased Upper-Body strength ,,
However before trying any inverted postures one has to be mindful of the correct alignment as many muscles are engaged in using those of the arms , shoulders , upper back and core !!
Remember having a firm solid foundation is the key to do it with perfection and precision 🙂

it’s not that i’m not a fan of gratitude, it’s just that i’ve heard/seen the word thrown around so many times i’m so bored of it.

but then today i was reminded again.
.
give thanks, moment to moment. for what my body can do, for what food i have to eat, for the blanket that covers me, for the where i get to live, for the changing leaves, the moment of peace in my heart. turn my attention to what i do have.

turning my attention to see what is all around me has in this short time reminded me that what you focus on grows. that filling my thoughts w focused - i’m about to say it - gratitude is rewarding and pleasant.

and i’ll still cringe if i see or hear the word thrown around, but as for the practice of it, i’m all in.

Backbend become much more effortless once you release the residence from the shoulder & quads (+ hip flexor + psoas)🙂
.
#PuppyPose is my "must" warm-up for any backbend! And I love to take it on the wall cos I feel deeper stretch on my shoulder.
.
Some tips for you 👇 .
🔹You can do this puppy on the wall in standing position, but you can try kneeling like I did in video if your shoulder is quite open 😉
.
🔹Flipping the grip in puppy pose can be very challenging if you have tight shoulder. Use a strap!
.
🔹 Try your best to move your armpit to the wall not only your chin and chest in puppy pose. It's so hard for me, too!! 😖
.

Backbend become much more effortless once you release the residence from the shoulder & quads (+ hip flexor + psoas)🙂
.
#PuppyPose is my "must" warm-up for any backbend! And I love to take it on the wall cos I feel deeper stretch on my shoulder.
.
Some tips for you 👇 .
🔹You can do this puppy on the wall in standing position, but you can try kneeling like I did in video if your shoulder is quite open 😉
.
🔹Flipping the grip in puppy pose can be very challenging if you have tight shoulder. Use a strap!
.
🔹 Try your best to move your armpit to the wall not only your chin and chest in puppy pose. It's so hard for me, too!! 😖
.

Did someone say let’s see some drills for strengthening the quadriceps? I chose a personal favorite - #navasana with some knee extension sizzle.

You can do single leg block taps in boat pose with it lower or.....double legs and the block higher. I like multi tasking - core and quads!

Make sure you activated your inner thighs and glutes, otherwise all the pressure will go to your lower back, which would result in compression
.
.
In order to avoid compression, lift your chest as much to your chin. This is to lengthen the lower back so you won’t load much pressure there, especially important for beginners.
.
.
If you have trouble finding the right position, put a block between your knees and squeeze it while going into this pose ;)

Today I’ve added a “how to” video for entering into Warrior III with some different arm variations as well. Enjoy and have fun with it! 🌎 My eco-friendly change is: being more energy aware! For example: turning off lights and appliances when you leave a room, turning the AC up a degree or two when you leave for work in the morning, or setting a timer on your TV so it doesn’t run all night. Recently we’ve started switching to all LED light bulbs in our household. Just very small changes over time really can make a difference! ⚡️💻💡🖥

Each week we’ve challenged you further by providing a specific thing to focus on during your practice. Let's recap:

Now for this week—your challenge is to RECOMMIT. That's right. Even if you aren't going to make 21 days. Even if you're tired. Even if it's difficult.
In yoga there is a principle called "tapas." It refers to self-discipline and the heat or discomfort that goes along with it. Through the practice of tapas, you begin to burn away the impurities that show up as distractions, aversions, feelings, or even bodily impurities. The removal of these impurities clears the path for personal growth and reminds us why we love our yoga practice!
So today, regardless if you're doing our challenge, recommit to your yoga practice.
We'll see you on your mat soon!

This is me, wobbling in every asana because my mind is all over the place.
This is me, in my pyjamas at 5.30am doing my yoga practice, before sunrise, getting it done to better myself, even with a 12 he working day ahead of me.
This is me, really pissed off that the cat woke me up at 3am.
This is me, tired 💤 and exhausted from running one business in property management & trying to start up a second business in yoga.
This is me, a student teacher, striving to be the best she can be to enlighten others with the magic of yoga 🧘🏻‍♀️ This is me... No staging. No videographer. No professional camera. No leggings & sports bras. No model-like figure.

Have you ever considered the most significant confidence boost exists in your body's physiology? It's my favourite pick me up.

Whenever I underestimate my goodness, I think of my lungs. The right lung of the human body has three lobes, while the left lung has only two - to make room for the heart. By design, you/me/we are by nature, very accommodating when it comes to matters of the heart. It's right there in our physiology.

On days when I question whether I'm doing enough, I think of my diaphragm. On the inhale, the diaphragm works by contracting. And on the exhale, it relaxes. Reminding me that, by design, the body takes in breath/life with vigor; breath can be as deep and as full as I'll allow. Exhaling is lighter and more relaxed; the output is less efforted.  Therefore, I would do best to do the same. Otherwise, I'm working against my physiology.

As OSHO says, the more we know our body, the more spiritually full we can live. I believe that Anatomy without Physiology misses essential details while studying both offers a beautiful picture of our nature, by design.

Demo of how to use yoga blocks at the wall to practice Wheel pose (Urdva Dhanurasana in Sanskrit). The blocks placed against the wall provide stability and added height. The added height of the blocks help lift the body and open up the chest and shoulders. Wheel pose opens up the chest and stretches the lateral sides of the body. Day 22 for @doyouyoga 's #doyoubackbend with Scorpion Pose (and I was initially intending to post it to the Mortal Kombat Scorpion theme song 😋).

How I approached this admittedly challenging pose:
Wall = your best friend in order to familiarise your body muscles and spine with the pose, especially if your back is more flexible than strong 🙋🏻‍♀️ and you don't want to hurt your low back in the process.
I started off by measuring my arms width to place them on the mat and interlace the fingers, creating a kind of nest for the head to come up in Headstand.
Note: this approach only works if Headstand is in your personal practice.
From Headstand, start bending the knees to lower the feet. At this point I placed my feet on the wall and pushed my arms against the floor to release the fingers, lift the head, and come into a forearm stand.
I slowly walked the feet down the wall (video is sped up due to ig time length limit), pushing firmly with the arms and keeping shoulder blades, glutes and core engaged to provide a strong support for the posture. From here I experimented with taking the feet off the wall and back, to test my balance and muscular support.
Once you feel it's time to come down, try to bring back one leg at a time and rest in Child's Pose, because you've been upside down for a while and the blood is gathered in the head.

#PuppyPose is my "must" warm-up for any backbend! And I love to take it on the wall cos I feel deeper stretch on my shoulder.

Some tips for you 👇 .
🔹You can do this puppy on the wall in standing position, but you can try kneeling like I did in video if your shoulder is quite open 😉
.
🔹Flipping the grip in puppy pose can be very challenging if you have tight shoulder. Use a strap!
.
🔹 Try your best to move your armpit to the wall not only your chin and chest in puppy pose. It's so hard for me, too!! 😖
.

I spent the extended weekend in Switzerland. We did all the hiking and I didn’t get to my mat once in the last few days. So here’s a flow from last week. Looking forward to my home practice tomorrow. 🏡✨

Das verlängerte Wochenende habe ich Schweiz verbracht. Ich bin super gerne in den Bergen und fand es besonders schön, die Landschaft dort in den Herbstfarben zu sehen 🍂! Meine Yogamatte habe ich zwar mitgenommen, aber nicht benutzt. Deswegen freue ich mich besonders auf meine Yogapraxis morgen zuhause. 😊

Das verlängerte Wochenende habe ich Schweiz verbracht. Ich bin super gerne in den Bergen und fand es besonders schön, die Landschaft dort in den Herbstfarben zu sehen 🍂! Should we just start a monthly “calling myself on my own shit” thing? Because I swear I just posted something like this, but here we go again.

I haven’t been honest with myself. Again.

If you’ve taken my class lately, you know that I’ve been talking about detachment. About how detachment isn’t ignoring what’s happening around you, it’s about acknowledging what’s happening around you and deciding not to give a shit. And that’s HARD.

I’ve been talking about it in class because it’s something that I need to hear. I’ve been so content to sit on my high horse and tell other people to do something that I’m struggling with, that the “powers that be” had to pretty much hit me over the head for me to see it. I was preaching detachment when I was still very much attached.

This isn’t me saying that I’ve somehow found the key to detachment overnight. I’m just saying that I’ve become more aware of something that I could work on. And that’s what I plan to do.

After enough prerequisite strength and flexibility, you can try this amazing inversion! 1) Sit with feel flat to the wall. 2) Mark where hands are alongside the hips and turn around to place elbows shoulder distance apart where fingertips were 3) From dolphin pose (forearms down/parallel, hips lifted), step one foot up hip height 4) Follow with other foot, push the floor away through forearms (relaxed neck), straighten legs and look at the wall.

This is first step on the wall for those of you who are comfortable and strong in #dolphinpose which is the best pincha prep. Warning to those who have never worked pincha on the wall like this: it is HARDER than the actual balance. It is *massive* in building strength, stability and awareness of core engagement. The hardest thing is getting the feet on the wall at hip level so there's a 90 degree angle. If it feels too easy, your feet are probably not where they need to be. 😅 Best thing is to have a friend or teacher spot you until you get a feel for what's right (although I still check myself here every time). Elbows under hips, feet in line with hips. 👍

The other challenge will be for those with tighter shoulders; your feet will not want to stay put so you must you draw your chest toward the wall to open the shoulders while pressing down into your forearms. (For those with very limited shoulder range this may not be the best prep for you to try). BUT if you're more open in the shoulders focus instead on belly in (mula bandha) and hips up. Super active legs throughout. Remember to breathe!

Still my favorite transformation photo ever 📷 👶🏼 💕 Photos taken 3 months apart but life and my heart opened up so completely in just those 3 months. Pregnant with my second I wasn’t sure how I could love another #yogababy as much as I loved our first. But somehow my body and my heart made room (literally and figuratively!) for this personality-filled smiley squishy babe.
