Toe stands have recently become a favorite in my balance practice. Balance practice is important because your balance is linked to your memory. Sounds weird, but I read it somewhere, so it's true. 😁 Now it's been said on IG, so its SUPER true now. Working on your balance works on your memory. The more you remember, the more you are free.

Day 6 of #AlongTheSummer challenge and the theme for today is seashell with bridge or wheel! I have chosen Eka Pada Dhanurasana aka Wheel Pose One Leg Variation. I tend to start that one with a few shoulder bridges trying to maintain the c curve in the spine and traveling bone by bone - try to make sure on the way down that your ribs touch down before your pelvis. This week I’ve been talking about giving thanks in my classes, not only for all the good things in life but also the bad. For shining a light and switching perspective on seemingly bad situations can lead to amazing transformations.
You’ve all heard me spout this talk before so instead of repeating myself I wanted to share with you a gratitude practice that quite literally changed my mind set and then my life.
I’ll call it 10 Things.
When I was at a low point in my life I saw nothing but grey, I just felt numb to the whole of life and hollow.
I dunno how I heard about the 10 things, maybe it was a podcast or a book I’d read. But in whatever it was, they asked you simply this:
“What are ten things that has made you happy and you can say thank you for today?”
I was stumped. I couldn’t even list 5. This shocked me so much I decided that this was a question I asked myself every night before I slept and made sure I wrote it down.
Sure it was hard at first.
But after a week or so I realized my mind and perspective was changing.
Granted I still felt like s*%t most days. But I was finding out in even the lowest of days there was so much beauty to behold if your eyes were open to it:
A simple smile shared
A baby’s laugh overheard in a mall
A hug with a old friend.
These 10 things help me shift my view on life and I share it here hoping it will reach someone and do the same.

It’s hard for me to count all of the variations of side plank that are available to us. There’s really something for everyone, depending on what you’re trying to focus on in the moment.

I love this particular variation because of the way it alternates the type of work being asked of each supporting leg 👍🏽
.
When we tap our top elbow to our top knee, our bottom leg has to resist *adduction* (leg moving across midline), which means that we get to strongly work some hip *abduction* (leg moving away from midline) in order to hold a steady position. (Is that confusing or what? 😜 Sorry about that heh heh)
.
When we do the opposite and tap our top elbow to our bottom knee, our top leg is the one doing the work to hold us in place. In this case, our orientation to gravity wants to pull that top leg away from our midline into abduction, so we have to actively work adduction in order to hold steady.
.
This provides some great work for our adductors (inner thigh muscles), which I’m sure you can feel if you try this move out!
.
Of course other areas of our body are also challenged in this side plank variation, like our lateral core and our bottom shoulder. But it’s the work in the lower body that really stands out for me when I think about this move.

Years ago it became clear to me that the number of chaturangas I was teaching was imbalanced when compared to all of the other postures that complement and balance chaturanga. I’m a huge fan of chaturanga and I teach it in all of my classes. But, I’m an even bigger fan of healthy shoulders and objectivity. Instead of simply focusing on good chaturanga technique, it became clear to me that I needed to drastically reduce the number of chaturangas that I include in my sequences. Even more, I had to start including much more of the shoulders strengthening actions that weren’t represented. ⁠⠀

These days, 25% of the vinyasas that I teach include chaturanga, 25% include cobra, 25% include locust, and 25% include some version of forearm plank. I include this ratio in nearly all of my classes, workshops and trainings—including my work with advanced students and teachers. It was a scary change to make, but it works so, so well for everyone. I’m so happy that there is a world of students that is willing to continue to make software updates to the way we practice yoga.⁠⠀

Years ago it became clear to me that the number of chaturangas I was teaching was imbalanced when compared to all of the other postures that complement and balance chaturanga. I’m a huge fan of chaturanga and I teach it in all of my classes. But, I’m an even bigger fan of healthy shoulders and objectivity. Instead of simply focusing on good chaturanga technique, it became clear to me that I needed to drastically reduce the number of chaturangas that I include in my sequences. Even more, I had to start including much more of the shoulders strengthening actions that weren’t represented. ⁠⠀

These days, 25% of the vinyasas that I teach include chaturanga, 25% include cobra, 25% include locust, and 25% include some version of forearm plank. I include this ratio in nearly all of my classes, workshops and trainings—including my work with advanced students and teachers. It was a scary change to make, but it works so, so well for everyone. I’m so happy that there is a world of students that is willing to continue to make software updates to the way we practice yoga.⁠⠀
