This summer is just a little sad for me. This time last year I’d run and for me that was impressive. At least an hour a day. And now, some days, I struggle to walk without a limp while I work with a specialist to fix the nerve damage on my left side. But, guess what? There’s always a reason to try harder. Ghrelin, aka the hunger hormone.

It’s an orxigenic (appetite stimulating) hormone in the body that signals the brain to increase food intake and decrease energy expenditure. Basically it makes people want eat more and burn fewer calories along the way.

We want ghrelin to be suppressed to avoid those hunger pangs. A study from 2008 showed protein suppressed ghrelin longer than carbohydrates or fat. Another reason to include some protein with every meal!

Unfortunately in obesity, one of many hormonal irregularities involves ghrelin. Ghrelin should be suppressed after eating but in the obese there is actually less suppression compared to an average weight person. Translation = overweight people will feel hunger again sooner. Pair this with leptin resistance (see previous post), and you’ll understand why dysfunctional hormones can hijack someone’s appetite. 
The complexity of appetite regulation extends far beyond one or two hormones but making sure to include some protein with every meal and keeping your blood glucose/insulin levels stable with a ketogenic diet will help!

I wanted a candle in my NS cupcake for my birthday this morning. I almost didn’t put one in there because it felt silly doing that for myself. Isn’t it funny how often we will go the extra mile for a friend, child or spouse but doing something nice for ourselves doesn’t come as easy? I remember someone asking me if I would ever talk to a friend the way I talked to myself. The answer was a big fat no! So today I decided if I wanted a candle I was going to have a candle 😂. I also weighed today just to stay motivated on a day that in the past would have been focused around food. I’m down 14.8lbs! Today the focus is going to be on family and friends and celebrating the good things that have come my way the last 46 years and food will be not be the main event!

Pour 2 personnes :.
- 6 tomates.
- le jus d’un citron.
- 3 cas d’huile d’olive.
- 2 cas de basilic.
- sel, poivre.
Faire une croix sur la peau de la tomate. Les plonger dans l’eau bouillante pendant 2min. Les éplucher et les écraser dans un saladier avec le reste des ingrédients.

It sounds pretty counter-intuitive, I know, but hear me out here.

If you're anything like I used to be, in your attempts to lose weight, you would do a pretty damn good job around your meals.
-
Rarely during breakfast, lunch or dinner would you stray away from the traditional "fat loss foods" and allow yourself to consume "unhealthy" stuff.
-
However, when the weekends hit, or when you decide to have a snack, you go IN on those opportunities.
-
FOMO. Fear Of Missing Out. It isn't just for sales at Target anymore.
-
You've been restricting and fighting your cravings so hard that when you DO finally decide to let yourself cut a little loose, your brain goes into FOMO mode and ratchets your cravings up to a thousand.
-
This is why you feel like you can't just have one cookie or a handful of chips. You've conditioned your brain to believe these foods are "bad" and you can't have them. So when you DO have them, your brain wants ALL of them.
-
So you binge. Then you're disappointed in yourself. Your diet feels ruined. So you say "fuck it" and throw the whole weekend out. Which becomes a bad week, then a bad month, until you're off the rails completely.
-
A better method is to incorporate these foods INTO you plan, and allow yourself to always have the option of enjoying them.
-
Why? Because then you won't fight those insane cravings. They just become food. And you won't feel the need to dive into the whole sleeve when you have just one cookie.

#Motivation vs #Discipline 
I’m sure we have all heard it... 👉🏼How do you stay so motivated to do ‘x’ ?? There is a few things wrong with asking this question. 
The smaller of those things is that what motivates someone else to do something is probably not going to work the same way for you. Everyone is different and everyone needs to do the work to find their own “why” rather than asking someone else. That’s an seemingly “easy” but yet ineffective method in my eyes to work towards a goal. 
So instead of asking someone else what their ‘why’ is, you need to take the time to think and find your own. 
The bigger of the two reasons why motivation is not really helpful in the long run is because it’s inconsistent. Motivation is fickle in the sense that it’s only really there when things are peachy 🍑, things are all in place for me not to be disturbed. There are no external challenges to distract me from doing what I wanted to do. 
Let me share a few examples as to why that is a problem. “I will lose weight over the summer because my job is slower so I have more time to meal prep and work out...” 👉🏼fast forward to end of summer 👉🏼 “I was just too busy this summer with kids camps and we went on vacation” “I will take that personal development course once I’m done school because I will have lots of time...” 👉🏼fast forward to end of school👉🏼 “I had to move back home and work the summer to make money so I didn’t have time for the course”

Do you see the pattern? 1️⃣ We are thinking there will be a “best time and place” for something 2️⃣ Life never seems to be “less busy” 3️⃣ Putting things off often leaves us not wanting to do it. 
Motivation is inconsistent because it relies so heavily on ideal situations. Life doesn’t have a perfect time and place so does that mean you will never do those things you need or want to do?

This is where discipline comes in. Sometimes even in the crappiest of times you just have to force yourself to do something. Sometimes you will  have to wiggle it into your daily routine and maybe have less time for leisure things and maybe it won’t be as fun. It also shows what is truly a priority and what is just a “want.”
