Shopping around is so important. My son wants to work towards his animal care badge at Beavers but as we don't have any pets he decided to look after the birds in our garden.
🐦
I looked on amazon to start (Prime delivery) and then Pets at Home to see what they had. One bird feeder on amazon was over £7, Pets at Home was cheaper but it still would have added up buying a few different items. So, after looking online at what they had, I decided to take him to @lovewilko after school yesterday. I bought everything in the picture for a grand total of £7.25. Far cheaper than elsewhere (I just hope the birds like them 🙈). 🐦
Shopping around can save so much money, and with most shops online you can do it all from the comfort of your own sofa (in your pjs, with a glass of wine in hand......or is that just me?). #wilko #birdfeeder

A grand total of £989 has been paid towards my debt this morning! That doesn’t include the £520 in minimum payments! I can’t believe I’ve paid off that much this month, plus paid for Christmas (thank you sinking funds!), saved the last of our wedding fund and also kept the household ticking over nicely!
It’s been HARD WORK but we’re doing it! #debtfreecommunity #ukdebtfreecommunity #daveramseyuk #debtfreejourney #debtfreeuk #daveramseybabysteps #sinkingfunds #moneymindset #budgeting #zerobasedbudget #debtsnowball #debtisdumb

Bye bye First Direct overdraft! Another step taken on my debt free journey. Creating a budget, giving every penny a job, side hustling extra income and a pay rise have all helped me get here, and micro-blogging about my progress to you lovely lot has helped me stay engaged and motivated. Thank you!

I now just have one debt to pay off, my MBNA credit card, but it’s a biggun with a balance just over 3k. I’d really like to end the decade with my debt starting with a 2, but I also don’t want to burn myself out and I’m feeling quite tired after my efforts last month, so we’ll see. #ukmoneybloggers #ukmoney #ukdebtfreejourney #ukdebtfreecommunity #moneyblog #ukmoneybloggers #moneybloggersuk #personalfinanceblogger #personalfinanceblog #debtpaidoff #debtreduced #payingoffdebt #payingdowndebts #financialgoals #moneygoals #moneysuccess #sidehustle

I think of myself as having a budget Christmas and there are lots of things I've done this year that are budget: our Xmas tree, cards and decorations are pretty much all bought in previous January sales at rock bottom prices, I've made homemade decorations for quite a lot of things, I don't change our colour scheme or Christmas decor but just add to it bit by bit, we used tesco voucher offers and other offers to save money on our food and have done DIY gifts and regifting to save heavily on gifts for family. BUT we are also massively spending on gifts for each other this year which is entirely down to me. I wanted to get Steph something really special and chose tickets to see Dear Evan Hansen in the west end plus a trip on the London Eye that Steph has never done (got buy 1 get one free for that) and our rule is that whatever one of us pays first the other matches in gifts for the other! Usually we stick to around £60 each and this year I went and more than doubled it 🙈 I've also decided to add in getting tickets for the grinch the musical on boxing day which I'm desperate to see. And this year I've gone higher on the decor costs because I spent £32 on a giant light up dachshund for our front window (worth every penny though, it makes me smile so much!) There are loads of ways I'll be saving this festive period but we've also been a bit spendier this year. Granted, we can afford it now that we haven't been saving for a house or a wedding like we were for the last few years, and one of the reasons is because we scrimp elsewhere the rest of the year. The gifts are also largely experiences & will be worth it, and we won't need much if anything at all in terms of decor now because we are running out of room! But remember that everyone's budget and circumstances are different. Please don't put yourself into debt trying to make your Christmas look like others you see. About 5 years ago I put over £1000 of spending on a credit card for Christmas... It's not worth it. I spent over a year paying off that balance, just so under my tree that year I would have the luxury of a load of fancy gifts. Now I budget to what I can afford, some years it's more, some years less.

This was my starting point at the beginning of November. So excited to update this figure for the first time on my solo journey. I’m just waiting for my landlord to release my house deposit (hopefully tomorrow or Monday) and then I’ll be tallying up the latest total figure. 🙊

Payday tomorrow!!! 😁😁 completely overspent November’s budget as I couldn’t resist the Black Friday deals and also had no Christmas sinking funds. Must be more prepared next year with those! It’s my husbands bonus tomo so looking forward to paying extra on the credit cards. #debtfreecommunity #debtfreejourney #debt #debtfree #debtfreecommunityuk #debtfreecommunityaustralia #debtfreecommunitynz #ukdebtfreecommunity #ukdebtfreejourney #budgeting #budget #daveramsey #daveramseybabysteps #babystep2 #savings #payday #familyfinances #budgetingtips #frugal #frugalliving #frugallife

I've just realised that my most recent debt payment has meant that for the first time since I was 18, I have more savings than debt 🥳🥳.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀
I have about £3300 in savings, and debt is below £3000 now. I didn't think such a minor change would mean so much, but with these dark winter evenings getting me down it's nice to focus on the small wins 🥰

⭐️ 5TH DECEMBER ⭐️ Finally starting to feel a little like Christmas ❤️🎄🎅🏼Some people like an elegant, simple set of decorations - NOT ME! 😂 I love all the lights, the tinsel and the tat! Just a reminder…

Im heading into the shops tomorrow to get my Christmas shopping done and this will be in the back of my mind. I cannot afford to spend a fortune on the latest gadgets for my boy and thats okay, because its a priority of mine to live within my means.
He will have presents none the less but only ones I can afford. I have no doubt in my mind he will still enjoy all that Christmas brings, food, family, games and gifts. Thats what matters.
Here’s to heading into January with no Christmas debt and peace of mind knowing we cash funded the whole thing.

Two points up from last month, not bad at all! I am finally finding a balance with it all and it feels great but I'm not going to pretend that I'm not tired though. I am actually shattered and spend whatever time I'm not busy in bed asleep 👀. Working a full time job and having side hustles that actually require my physical imput is really hard work but as Chris Hogan would say, "I'm focused but not finished!" #countingdowntofreedom .

Working in retail means I’m paid every 4 weeks. That means I’m paid 13 times per year, however, I only pay bills 12 times per year! 😝

Unfortunately it’s not as clean cut as I’d like, but over the course of December I’m hoping to see some of the benefit of this. My manager called it free money earlier 😂
I’ve already paid my main bills for December with my November pay, my next pay is 2nd Jan which is when all of my next bills go out. (This should put me back in alignment with payday/bills going out around a similar time)
Now I’m not sure how this is going to pan out exactly so I’m not going to be stupid and spend it. I’ve already put my spends into my Monzo account so I’m going to stick to that and see what’s left once the last few bills go out / once I get paid. Hopefully I’ll have some extra savings 🙊

If you’re wondering where to start with budgeting, save this post to refer back to ❤️ When it comes to starting something new, we try to look for the perfect way to start. The best thing that we can do. I challenge you to just start. Wherever it is that makes most sense to you - and you can adjust as you go - it’s the first step that’s the most important. It doesn’t matter where you start, as long as you do.

Don’t wait until the 1st of January either 😉 I know how tempting it is! But that’s just your brain trying to stop you from doing something new.

If you’re afraid to look at your bank account, taking these steps will be a game changer for you. You can make the positive changes that you and your family need.

If it helps, pretend that it’s your friends account. Pretend that you’re going through it with them, and say to yourself what you would say to them.

We can be so, so hard on ourselves. Be gentle with yourself ❤️ you aren’t alone in having money worries. Take a look around Instagram in the money world and you will see 🥰 we are here to cheer you on.

You know what it is that will push you forward and keep you motivated. The time has come to hold your hand up and say I’m going to do it. For me, I think about my daughter. I want to show her that you can be brave enough to make a change, things can be better, and you WILL achieve your dreams. It takes a bit of courage, hard work, and being kind to yourself ❤️ If you know someone who you think would find this post helpful, please tag them below 👇🏻 we’ve got this!

I’ve been off work sick today, I slept all morning and was then restless all afternoon , so confined to my bed I did a bit of life admin! I managed to save nearly a third on my cat insurance - with the same company! Not a bad way to spend an otherwise wasted day. Right, I’m back to bed to watch some YouTube since I’m still feeling pants 🦠🦠🦠

I’m a total numbers nerd!! I always like to know what my options are to make an informed decision. I’ve broken down my pension pot like if I would be taking the whole pot. If you are interested in playing with your figures, go to the pension wise website to use their pension pot calculator (for the taxes). I got my pension pot figures from my projected pension total from pension scheme provider, Pot A is my current projected pension pot which I contribute 5% of my salary. Pot B is projected figure if I increased my contribution to 10%. Looking at both pots side by side, pot B looks like a sensible option but to me the taxes seems a bit diabolical and growth on investment doesn’t seem life changing. Therefore I’ve been playing around the idea of investing at least 10% into a Shares and Stock ISA in April. At this point I should have £15K for my half of the house deposit, sinking funds for a ‘new’ car and house fund and emergency fund.

Also I'm aware I wouldn't be able to survive long term on either pot. I'll need additional investments.

Have you done the calculations?

Every parent has a meal in their repertoire that is ideal for the nights when you’re low on motivation, or time. Being a parent of a child with allergies, and teaching my child about allergies, means that it can be harder to knock up meals quickly. I need to ensure the kitchen is clean and safe before cooking begins and I try to involve Daisy wherever I can too. This red pepper pasta sauce recipe is one of my fail safe dinners. Daisy will ALWAYS eat it, I can add some veggies and protein to bulk it out and it is pretty cheap too! It’s a great way to save money versus buying the very expensive jarred ‘safe’ sauces too. Head over to the link in my bio, or google ‘AllergyFreeDay’ to visit my specialist allergies website! #allergyfreeday #allergymama #fpies #allergyfriendlyrecipes #allergyawareness #allergyfree #allergymom #fpiesfamily #foodallergy #fpiesbaby #fpiesmom #moneysaving #frugalfood #debtfreecommunity #ukdebtfreecommunity #debtfreecommunityuk #ukdebtfree #ukmoneybloggers

This is the second time I've made this recipe....red lentil dahl from @kateveggiedesserts. The first time I cooked it on the hob, today in the slow cooker.
I usually find a recipe and totally change it and make it my own. However, I have followed this recipe to the letter both times because it is so absolutely tasty! My 6 year old (the fussiest of us) left a tiny amount, my 2 year old completely cleared his plate.

There was a slight difference in texture cooking in the slow cooker (it was a little wetter) but that made absolutely no difference to taste. The only ingredient I had to buy was the coconut milk, the rest were things we already have in the cupboard which makes it super cheap to make. The chapatis we also made, though from another site...possibly #bbcgoodfood (I left the recipe for my husband to make this afternoon) and is so easy.

We will absolutely be making this again, I absolutely love it 😍 #veggiedesserts

IT’S PAYDAY 🥳
✅ £9.95 which was left in my Monzo transferred to my house fees pot.
✅ £50 put into wedding pot.
✅ £800 put into my cash ISA.
✅ £500 put into my Monzo spends pot. This is £200 more than I would normally put away but it’s to allow me to do some Christmas shopping, get my hair done and go out on new year.

✨Stay & Play✨It was a stay and play session at school today, meant a quick coffee stop to kill a bit of time after the school drop off before we could go in. I was so tempted to get a KFC for dinner but the OH wouldn’t go and it wasn’t an option on apps so that was £30 kept in the bank instead💪🏼, not that it was because of my willpower😂! As we’re both so busy with work on opposite days now it limits the possibility of spending and hopefully keeps us on a budget.💫_____________________________________________________________ #moneysaving #debtfreegoals #debtsnowball #debtfreeliving #frugalliving #debtfreecommunity #debtfreejourney #debtfreelife #debtfreeuk #debtfreecommunityuk #debtfreefamily #ukdebtfreecommunity #debtfreelifestyle #bs2 #debtfreedom #moneysavingexpert #moneysaving #ukdebt #smallshovel #bs2 #ukdebtfree #ukdebt #debtsnowballin #babystep2 #snowballin #debt #debtfreelife #teamsmallshovel #budgetlife

So my plan to cook once and eat twice is going well and Friday/Saturday will work perfectly for it but as I’ve been on site with a client all day today, I decided to go for the easy option. So tonight’s dinner is yellow sticker ‘fusion’ from good old M&S.
.
My normal go to after a long day would be to simply order a takeaway but we’re all trying to be a lot healthier so this was the better AND cheaper option. .
Think the next thing on my list needs to be meal planning as there’s no reason I can’t - just need to get organised! 💖

More wise words from the weekly @james_clear email.

Even little reminders reinforce why so many of us are making behaviour changes in lots of different areas and the reasons why. This applies to so many goals - saving money, losing weight and much, much more. .
Food for thought as 2020 approaches 💖

🎄December goals🎄
.
A little late as always, here are my goals for this month. I have decided to continue with the #nospendchallenge but knowing Christmas dinners and celebrations will start soon, I don't think it's feasible to increase the target. I am also aiming at £200 mortgage overpayment - this is definitely something I want to increase in 2020!
Two new goals for this month are:
💸 making £25 from surveys and apps - this will need a bit of effort as I am very lazy and only do a survey every few days, need to do it more often!
⚽ I really need to try #matchedbetting, I keep saying it and I keep pushing it to the next month. Let's see if writing it down will help!

I received a lovely dm earlier and it really got me thinking about what I would do differently if I had known all I know now at the age of 21.

Its fair to say, I didnt know absolutely nothing about money, I wasnt one of those people blessed with financial skills and good money management. I was quite the opposite and would be praying the account did not show overdrawn or the card did not decline at the checkout.
The only thing I could say I was successful with, was contributing to a pension as soon as I was old enough but in all honesty It took a long while to build positive financial habits such as checking my bank accounts and starting saving even if it was just small amounts.

I guess this is why, I place so much importance in making sure I teach my son about money. I dont sit him down and lecture him, Im simply open about our situation and ask him to do a couple of jobs for his pocket money once a week.

I may find myself saying; “Mummy goes to work, so we can live in this house and have food in our bellys” “No, that is very expensive. Mummy would have to save for it”

Its fair to say, buying a house feels almost impossible in this day and age and who actually teaches us how to budget? Life often happens and theres no money to get by, never mind save!

So these are just afew things I wish I had known if I was 21 again. Life would be much more different now and as much as that can be a depressing thought, I shake it off and get excited about the next 10 years. Imagine the financial situation then. 🙂
