When we first started the Friday the 13th event at @marionstreettattooandgallery, I never would have imagined we would have a day like yesterday. It was definitely the most amazing Friday the 13th yet. A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out and got tattooed and another HUGE thank you to everyone who donated to Toys for Tots! In total, we collected 18 full boxes of toys (hundreds upon hundreds of toys) and made 724 tattoos! Big thanks to all of our friends who traveled to help make this happen. Thank you to everyone at @eternalink for donating all of the supplies for the day so we could keep the people happy. We came together as a community for something greater than just a tattoo. It was quite a sight and I don’t think this fully describes it. If you missed it, you should have seen it. Tattooing won yesterday! Your 10,000 rep/10,000 hour rule? Yeah, about that. Volume and reps matter, but guidance is key to long term performance. Many coaches and athletes fall short of executing on three caveats that are necessary for EVERY. SINGLE. REP.
.
1️⃣ There *must be INTENT.
Your handwriting is the best example of this. As a kid, you learned how to hold a pencil, your letters got pretty good pretty fast, and then when the writing got “good enough” you abandoned the learning phase and focused solely on execution. *You stopped improving.* Thousands and thousand of reps accumulated over a lifetime... and chance are, if it’s like mine, it has gotten progressively WORSE over time. With no specific INTENT behind the reps, the ability to improve is blunted and you will likely actually decline, hours be damned.

2️⃣: Feedback: You must have a feedback mechanism to adjust your trajectory.
.
Shooting basketballs gives you a direct feedback loop... it went in, or it didn’t. The feedback is immediate and the goal is binary. This is a far cry from training day after day, over weeks and years. Physiological traits and characteristics come and go as training objectives change.. without a person or an objective target to give you feedback, there is no reference point to gauge progress. Is it better, or is it not?

3️⃣ It must be challenging:
Too many athletes are sitting 2 feet away from the basket nailing shots all day thinking they’re KILLING it, simply because they are the best athlete in their 9:30am class, or the strongest one of their friends. Nobody cares how good you are, it only matters how good you want to be. You need to ensure reps, volume, and complexity guide your trajectory and give you a better vision of what it means to actually achieve.

Think about this next time you step in the gym, pick up a barbell, or learn a new task.
At what point will you feel it’s good enough?
At what point will you stop learning and simply execute.
.
Live with intent. Train with intent.
Make every rep count.
