Wir in den westlichen Ländern hingegen kaufen diese Kleidung ohne uns über die Konsequenzen bewusst zu sein: ⚠️etwa 1,2 Milliarden Tonnen CO2 werden jährlich durch die Textilindustrie produziert. Das ist mehr als der gesamte Luft-und Schiffverkehr zusammen ausstoßen. ⚠️es gelangen schädliche Stoffe durch die Herstellung, aber auch die Waschung und natürlich die Entsorgung eines jeden Kleidungsstückes in die Umwelt ⚠️0,18 € erhalten alle Arbeiter, die an dem Herstellungsprozess beteiligt sind, gesammelt im Durchschnitt, wenn ein T-Shirt 29,00€ kostet. ⚠️ca. 1,50 € kostet ein Standard T-Shirt aus China beim Großhändler inklusive Lieferung ⚠️0,40€ kosten die benutzten Rohstoffe im Durchschnitt ⚠️90% unserer Kleidung kommt aus Asien, wo weit über 60% der Seen und Flüsse verschmutzt sind ⚠️65% der Arbeiter in den meisten Fabriken haben sich bei der Arbeit bereits verletzt ⚠️1127 Opfer forderte der bisher bekannteste Fabrikeneinsturz , unzählige andere Fälle mit ebenfalls hunderten Opfern sind bekannt ⚠️4.800.000.000 Kleidungsstücke kaufen alleine die Deutschen jedes Jahr ⚠️0% mehr geben wir jährlich für Mode aus, obwohl wir unseren Konsum in den letzten zehn Jahren verdoppelt haben ⚠️40% unserer Kleidung tragen wir selten bis nie ⚠️1000.000.000 Kilogramm Kleidung werden in Deutschland pro Jahr in Altkleidersammlungen abgegeben (entspricht einer Wäscheleine voll Pullover von der Erde bis zum Mond). Der Export dieser Kleidung ist ein Millionengeschäft, ein Großteil wird in Afrika und anderen Ländern verkauft. Vieles landet auf Deponien, wo die Kleidungsstücke Farbstoffe, Plastikpartikel und Chemikalien wieder an die Umwelt abgeben .

Shirts in all shapes and sizes look good. They can be dressed up or dressed down. One can find really pretty old silk shirts at vintage stores and I think they look great tucked into pants or worn out on shorts. Plus, you don't need a zillion of them. Two classic shirts are really enough.

A more sustainable holiday ✨🎄

We had plans this morning that were cancelled (nothing better for an introvert than cancelled plans 🙌🏼) and so I took the free time to finally sit down and catch up on my fave, @wastefreeplanet’s digital magazine!The article by @thedailygreens.co on making new sustainable traditions stood out to me as this is a big year of change for us when it comes to the holiday season.

My daughter is a bit older this year and able to participate more, we have been trying to add more holiday traditions at home. Growing up, our traditions included opening up a new pair of pjs on Christmas, usually from some fast fashion brand, and waking up mega early to open up a stocking from Santa. Of course, these options can be incredibly wasteful, and environmentally harmful, and truthfully, we already have everything we need, so we want to incorporate minimalism and sustainability into our holiday routines.

Just a few of the traditions that we have discovered this year + last that we hope to continue with:
-dehydrating oranges, of course, and any other citrus that might be possibly rotting in your fridge— shout out to my almost moldy limes for making my fave dried citrus
-baking gingerbread people, maybe with actual cutouts instead of free handed
-foraging for nature decor/ornaments and bringing the outside indoors!
-avoiding the waste of traditional wrapping by using what we have to wrap gifts, if there are any.
-gifting with time + intention — either spending time with family and friends as gifts or giving something that is absolutely necessary for the receiver.

These are small steps but they all somehow focus on more time together and less time out spending money on unnecessary +wasteful things. I’m looking forward to seeing how the small things evolve as the years go on. What new traditions have you implemented in your household to coincide with your sustainable lifestyle?

3. Don’t blow all of your money!!! It’s so fun to give, but giving beyond your means causes stress. Know your limits and give below that.
4. Remember to contribute to others. Contributing beyond yourself is important all throughout the year, but this time of year is a great time to practice. Give your time, money, or resources in a way that can better society. Maybe try something this #givingtuesday

s u s t a i n a b l e s w a p s •• There are plenty of bathroom swaps you can make to reduce waste. A simple one is replacing traditional toilet paper with bamboo tp. @reelpaperco recently gifted me a sample to try and I’m a complete fan. But when I told my dad about it, his first response was “Bamboo? Ouch!.” So I’ll answer that first - this stuff is soft, I promise!

So why is bamboo a sustainable option? Each day 27,000 trees are cut down for toilet paper. Meanwhile, bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet, uses 30% less water than hardwood, and gives out more oxygen than trees.

My access to a low-waste lifestyle is a privilege that I acknowledge and wholly appreciate. The people at @twofarmerscrisps are using wood pulp sourced from the waste created at eucalyptus plantations to make their chip packaging. That means you can actually bury this compostable packaging in a home composter and expect it to break down entirely in 26 weeks!

We can't help but wonder why chip brands like @fritolay are lagging when we see awesome solutions like this! @sunships introduced a compostable bag back in 2008 but pulled it off the shelves after complaints that it was too noisy. A decade later, and the plastic problem has gotten a hell of a lot worse. We'll happily deal with some bag noise if it helps save the planet!
