Dr. Myers specializes in CrossFit and Olympic lifting, so it only makes sense that he would throw it into his programming. Sometimes switching it up from your base program is necessary and beneficial!

Two weeks of pediatric rotations has flown by 💨 I guess I really must be having fun 😉. And I feel like I’ve learned so much in this short time already...can’t even imagine how much I’ll learn by the end of the year!

Staying active on vacation. Day 2 in Stone Harbor, NJ and we were up and running! Pushed myself today with a goal in mind of breaking 20 minutes and didn’t quite get there but can’t be mad about finishing 18th overall with a time of 20:33. The humidity here is no joke! Thanks to @dr.tommymartin for helping me out along the way. Did a pre training 5k in April at a 7:11 pace and today was a 6:36!

Biceps win races and gets you to the games right @huntthesheriff

Post 10 mile arm pump and a NEW LOW WEIGH IN!!!! Hit 176 on the scale this past week. It was of course as yet a long ride so a lot of water weight was lost but still a big win for me this week.

Trying to compete with @mattbroeckelman and @barbell_chiro on our @strong.docs transformation challenge!!! So far I would say I am a little beyond these two studs but I AM COMING!!!!!

I am currently sitting at:
Weight: 176
Calories: 2800-3100
Macros: 175p/55f/the rest carbs
.
Workout regimen: hitting all body parts except arms twice a week and at least an hour of cardio a day in the form of #swimbikerun!

Gotta win this shred contest while prepping for #ironman #waco! LETS GET IT!!!!!!!! Who says you cannot do endurance sports and maintain muscle mass!

I still cannot believe that my 3rd and final year in residency is just days away. Being called “doctor” is still a surprise to me some days and imposter syndrome is still alive and well on some days as well

Lupus (SLE) can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs, gut...Everything.

I was diagnosed at the age of 13. Had my first real flare up at 31.
———
I remember being 13 and told, it’s a chronic illness, and well at 13 life doesn’t really go further than tomorrow... the concept was so foreign. At 31 as I lay in a hospital bed again for the first time since I was that young girl, it finally clicked. Chronic means life long, and that it will be with me forever
———
I’m not going to lie, I felt down. Real down when this happened in May. It was shortly after our wedding, and I felt robbed. Robbed of the celebration that’s supposed to occur after you get married. I felt cheated and mad at the universe for throwing me such a curve ball, and the universes audacity at thinking I was strong enough to see the positive in this mess...

And then.... slowly. It passed. The pain subsided, the meds started to work. And just like everyday the sun rose. I had prayed and hoped that as I lay in that bed my body would be strong enough to push through, and that the bloating would subside and that the aches and pains would resolve. I was most fearful that my mind wouldn’t be able to get over the pain and bitterness I had against life treating me so “unfairly”...

But then... slowly. It passed. My smile returned, my laugh was full. And I was able to remember all the good I had in my life, amidst all of the suffering
———

This may be true. As a definition. But not my way of seeing it. Lupus gave me my window into becoming a doctor. It gives me a reminder everyday that I am a badass. It gives me a reminder that I literally can fall down and rise higher. It gives me the power to tell you all that whatever you’re going through ... it will pass. Sometimes the line to see the light is long, but you just gotta stay the course, stay in line, stay in the arena; because the glory of the other side and the insight is EVERYTHING🙌🏽 #timehealswhatreasoncannot

As you may have seen, I’ve been in the 🌏PHILIPPINES🌏 the past two weeks! I had EVERY intention of being good while I was there - doing HIIT workouts in the jungle, weighing my food (yes, I packed my scale and a measuring cup), and keeping up with my supplements. .

Truth is, NONE of that happened! 🤭 I lived in the moment - which is fine! But we should still exercise SOME discipline 😬 SO, with that being said, I am PUMPED to absolutely ⚡️CRUSH⚡️ PREP with @strong.docs and KILL this show in September!! .

Where does the time go...... today I had the opportunity to meet a group of our interns as they were getting a tour of the NICU and it made me think back to last year when I was starting. I remember getting the same tour and going through the same orientation. So many emotions filled that week.....excitement, ambition, joy, determination, and fear.
.
You start asking yourself so many questions......
.
🔹️Am I ready for this?
.
🔹️Am I going to be a good doctor? 🔹️Will I love this as much as I thought I would?
.
🔹️Was the years of medical school worth it? .
🔹️Am I going to get along with my colleagues?
.
For those interns who are starting just know all of these questions are completely normal and you will continue to question yourself..... But trust in yourself, your decision, and remember why you started! Intern year is hard, the learning curve is steep, and the responsibility can be intimidating.... but I promise, YOU ARE READY and IT IS WORTH IT!!! The first time a patient tells you, "Thank you Dr. Martin you have made a difference in my life." All those questions will fade away and you will realize all the sacrifice was definitely worth it. Day in and day out remember, you are doing this for the love of your patients and it is definitely worth it!

Staying fit in medical school and residency can definitely be a challenge! Recently received some DMs from some medical students who just graduated asking for some advance on how to maintain it in residency! Here are some of our tips on how we have been able to balance it!

Myself: ran a marathon, an ultra marathon, and do an Ironman during intern year!
.
@doctor.phoebe has ran 3 marathons during intern year and will have done a sprint triathlon!
.
🔹️Our Tips🔹️
.
1. 📅Keep a schedule. This will help you stay organized throughout residency and make sure you pencil in type to workout!
.
2. 😍Do what you love. If you enjoy lifting weights, lift weights. If you enjoy running, run. Adherence is most important and that is most likely to happen by doing what you love.
.
3. 🏨Be efficient. When you are at work, work your butt off and get your work done. This will make sure you get out on time and optimize your time outside of work!
.
4. 👫 Find a Partner. Having someone to workout with will help motivate you and hold you accountable!
.
5. 😴 Sleep. 7 hours of sleep a night is ideal. Make this a priority during residency to ensure you are on your A game at work and energized to workout early in the morning or later in the day!
.
6. 🍕 Watch your intake. Be conscious of the foods your are eating. During medical school and residency there is always TONS OF "junk" food, and lots of it. If you are not careful you will daily eat a few hundred above your maintenance and easily put on the intern 20. Myfitnesspal is a huge asset.
.
7. 🏃‍♂️ Daily Cardio. Even if it is just 10 minutes. This is good for mental health, cardiovascular health, and will help burn a few extra calories. Walking, running, biking, swimming. Whatever you enjoy do it.

👎WHY THE SCALE SUCKS!!!!!

Check out one of our clients that is going through the transformation challenge. You can see a huge difference in just 8 days. The right on the first picture is day 1 and the left is 8 days later!

The crazier thing is that she has not lost a pound. We wanted to did this to encourage those you may be battling the scale not moving. It can definitely be discouraging at times when we are looking for the numbers but that is why before and after pictures can be so beneficial. These results go much further than what the scale shows.
.
Another example, I weighed 189 today which my lowest weigh in so far has been 177. That is 12 lb more than my lowest weight of this cut so far. If I believe the scale then I would have been devastated, but knowing that water weight, hormones, bowel movements and a million other things affect weight I was not discouraged whatsoever. Trust the process, make sure you are in the calorie deficit you say you are, do not cheat yourself, and keep working as hard as you can. The numbers on the scale does not always tell the whole truth.

The crazier thing is that she has not lost a pound. We wanted to did this to encourage those you may be battling the scale not moving. It can definitely be discouraging at times when we are looking for the numbers but that is why before and after pictures can be so beneficial. These results go much further than what the scale shows.

Another example, I weighed 189 today which my lowest weigh in so far has been 177. That is 12 lb more than my lowest weight of this cut so far. If I believe the scale then I would have been devastated, but knowing that water weight, hormones, bowel movements and a million other things affect weight I was not discouraged whatsoever. Trust the process, make sure you are in the calorie deficit you say you are, do not cheat yourself, and keep working as hard as you can. The numbers on the scale does not always tell the whole truth.

Lupus (SLE) can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs, gut...Everything.

I was diagnosed at the age of 13. Had my first real flare up at 31.

I remember being 13 and told, it’s a chronic illness, and well at 13 life doesn’t really go further than tomorrow... the concept was so foreign. At 31 as I lay in a hospital bed again for the first time since I was that young girl, it finally clicked. Chronic means life long, and that it will be with me forever
———
I’m not going to lie, I felt down. Real down when this happened in May. It was shortly after our wedding, and I felt robbed. Robbed of the celebration that’s supposed to occur after you get married. I felt cheated and mad at the universe for throwing me such a curve ball, and the universes audacity at thinking I was strong enough to see the positive in this mess...

And then.... slowly. It passed. The pain subsided, the meds started to work. And just like everyday the sun rose. I had prayed and hoped that as I lay in that bed my body would be strong enough to push through, and that the bloating would subside and that the aches and pains would resolve. I was most fearful that my mind wouldn’t be able to get over the pain and bitterness I had against life treating me so “unfairly”...

But then... slowly. It passed. My smile returned, my laugh was full. And I was able to remember all the good I had in my life, amidst all of the suffering

This may be true. As a definition. But not my way of seeing it. Lupus gave me my window into becoming a doctor. It gives me a reminder everyday that I am a badass. It gives me a reminder that I literally can fall down and rise higher. It gives me the power to tell you all that whatever you’re going through ... it will pass. Sometimes the line to see the light is long, but you just gotta stay the course, stay in line, stay in the arena; because the glory of the other side and the insight is EVERYTHING🙌🏽 #timehealswhatreasoncannot

Trying to balance a healthy lifestyle while being a medical student, resident, or doctor is extremely challenging. There are so many obstacles and hurdles that you must overcome to be successful at maintaining both.

For medicine we need to be constantly studying, working long hours at the hospital, having enough energy to be on top of it caring after our patients, enduring the stresses of losing patience, missing time with friends and family, and resisting burnout.
.
For fitness we need to try to maintain healthy eating habits with our leptin tanked, unhealthy food being served often at the hospital, and all of the kind of attendings bringing in tons of good treats. We also need to have enough energy after working a 12 to 14-hour day to try to work out consistently.
.
I do not list all of this to complain but you rather let you know that I understand, the struggle is real.
.
BUT throughout my intern year I've definitely found the solutions to many of these problems and how to overcome them, be on your A-game while at the hospital, and reach your fitness goals.
.
And with that being said that is in part why through our personal training business @strong.docs we wanted to set up the transformation challenge and help people find that nice lifestyle to be able to succeed at medicine while succeeding at what is most important and that is our own individual health.

Day 1 for me! During my time off from lifting I started doing some home workouts and to my surprise really enjoyed it.

In my life I have been either a runner or a powerlifter. During my time off from lifting I committed to trying a few other things. Why not?!!! 🧘🏽‍♀️🏋🏽‍♀️🤸🏽‍♂️
So home workouts and yoga it was! And I just loved it.

I am not giving up lifting just adding some home workouts. So this was day 1 of the workouts that I will do for my #dailymovement with my powerlifting! I want to be well rounded athlete! #day1 #bettereveryday #strongmom

I still cannot believe that my 3rd and final year in residency is just days away. Being called “doctor” is still a surprise to me some days and imposter syndrome is still alive and well on some days as well
———
This job and career is still as fulfilling as ever, and I am so excited for all you new interns to feel the high it is to be living out your dreams. Take it in stride. We’ve all been those scared, overwhelmed and ready to conquer the world interns. Don’t let anyone squash that. You’ve earned this high 💕💜
