#MeetTheTeam: Divan van Rooyen (@vanrooyen_divan) is a second-year PhD candidate in the WRG. He completed his undergraduate studies in B.Sc. Tourism, Geography with Zoology in 2014 and then continued to his B.Sc. Honours degree in Environmental Sciences in 2015 under the supervision of Professor Mark Maboeta. In 2016 he started his M.Sc. in Environmental Sciences which focussed on the ecotoxicology of CdTe quantum dots and its functional groups on Enchytraeus albidus (the white worm) under the supervision of Professors Victor Wepener, Mark Maboeta and Dr Tarryn Lee Botha.
Divan started his PhD in 2018 under the supervision of Professors Nico J Smit and Victor Wepener with Dr Ruan Gerber. The focus of his PhD is to study the role of the Usuthu River as a refuge for the aquatic biodiversity for the lower Phongolo system. This will be done by determining water and sediment quality of both rivers and their respective pans, assessing the biodiversity of fish species, fish response to organochlorine pesticides as well as determining fish migration through strontium stable isotopes.

WSIO member feature (part 1/3): Dr Clare Prebble @clareprebble
Clare has a PhD from @uni_southampton in the UK, she studied her undergrad in #zoology and her masters degree in #ecology #evolution and #conservation. Her PhD thesis focussed on using biochemistry techniques to look at the diet and movements of whale sharks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like Jess, Clare has been based out of #PraiadoTofo, #Mozambique since 2011 and is a senior scientist at the #marinemegafauna. She currently works on projects relating to #whalesharks, #stableisotopes, fatty acid analysis, #photo-ID, #movement, #diet and #wildlifeconservation.
Clare has conducted fieldwork with colleagues in #Mozambique, #Tanzania, Qatar, and the Galapagos Islands. For Clare being able to encounter these gentle giants often along with other unique marine #wildlife including mantarays, turtles, humpback whales and #dolphins is an amazing privelage.
Clare is pictured here taking an #IDphoto of a whale shark. Each whale shark has a unique spot pattern, like a fingerprint that lets us identify individuals.

By filtering sea water and collecting the small plankton (seen floating around in the video) and other particles in the water, we can use stable isotope analysis to build a food web that includes these microscopic organisms, lobsters, and others in between! 🌊👩🏼‍🔬

Spent some quality time slicing and dicing with the rock saw today. Deep sea corals create new layers of skeleton as they grow; that's why a cross section of this one looks like it has rings, kind of like a tree trunk! The chemistry of its skeleton will tell me a story about what it ate and what its environment was like hundreds of years ago. Feeling thankful my study organism is so neat (and beautiful to boot). #stableisotopes

Butterfly, before and after sampling, grinding, hydrolysis, derivatization, and amino acid-specific stable isotope analysis 🤓. If I’m honest, a clean chromatogram is as beautiful to me as any butterfly 😊. It’s quite an intimate way to get to know an organism, to look specifically at the isotopic signatures of the building blocks of it’s proteins. And now I know a part of this butterfly’s story, some of it’s secrets! Stable isotopes can tell you where an organism has been, what it’s eaten, how high up the food chain it is, whether it’s a picky eater or a generalist, what’s going on in it’s gut, how it metabolizes...They tell you how organisms relate to each other.
.
I actually wonder about stable isotopes when I encounter organisms in the real world, like the mole who’s digging up my yard or the birds who’ve built their nest on my house or the bees who enjoy my purple flowery shrubs, or the coyotes I sometimes glimpse in the foothills. I think, “what are your secrets? Tell me your story! If only I had a few milligrams of tissue...” I’m usually very analytical about my science, which is usually conducted entirely in the lab, but this delicate butterfly has reminded me of the romance of it—of the close bond I form with everything I sample and the ways in which I’m able to then share their stories with the community. I appreciate that my research allows me to better understand and feel connected to the organisms whose planet I share. It’s hard not to acknowledge a oneness with nature when you’re looking beneath the surface at nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen, which we all have in common.🦋

Ancient Bones That Tell a Story of Compassion

While it is a painful truism that brutality and violence are at least as old as humanity, so, it seems, is caring for the sick and disabled.

And some archaeologists are suggesting a closer, more systematic look at how prehistoric people — who may have left only their bones — treated illness, injury and incapacitation. Call it the archaeology of health care.

The case that led Lorna Tilley and Marc Oxenham of Australian National University in Canberra to this idea is that of a profoundly ill young man who lived 4,000 years ago in what is now northern Vietnam and was buried, as were others in his culture, at a site known as Man Bac. “There’s an emotional experience in excavating any human being, a feeling of awe,” Ms. Tilley said, and a responsibility “to tell the story with as much accuracy and humanity as we can.” .
Photo 1: Almost all the other skeletons at the Man Bac site, south of Hanoi, are straight. But the man now called Burial 9 was laid to rest curled in a fetal position that suggests lifelong paralysis.

Photo 2: Skeletons at the Man Bac burial ground. Their straight postures suggest that Burial 9’s fetal position was evidence of severe disability.

Back from #fieldwork with @andersschomacker, sampling water from 50 lakes in #arctic Norway, Finland and Sweden! The water will be analyzed for #stableisotopes to give us a better understanding of differences between lakes in different settings. This is important when interpreting our #paleoclimate data from lake sediments!

Countdown to graduation: 3 days!
.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, my husband and I woke up at 3 am to drive 45 miles to Fresno where I would catch a train to Sacramento. I traveled nearly 500 miles roundtrip to get to @sacstate during my final semester.
As of today, this alarm is OFF!

Wow, there were so many wonderful talks and posters at UKAS 2019. This was my first year at the conference and it was such a positive experience seeing old faces and meeting new ones! And as evidenced by my picture here, I finally got around to presenting my master's research! Which on that note, I am forever thanking my supervisor and everyone that has worked on this project for letting me join in on it. Looking forward to the UKAS 2021 conference in Aberdeen!

We started a really cool new experiment in one of our autochambers: We want to find out if carbonic anhydrase (a certain enzyme) can be found in the acrotelm of the Mer Bleue bog and if it actually uses the local water supply to produce CO2. For this I emptied 100 syringes of 18O-enriched water into the upper acrotelm (blisters on my fingers included) and started a continuous measurement of the isotopic signature of 18O in CO2 - and guess what? First 12 hours of raw data show clearly some activity... What a great week so far!
