Hip belt squats are one of the best accessory movements for building huge squats, and huge legs, while working around pain and injuries. But they're rarely seen outside of specialist powerlifitng and bodybuilding gyms.

Hip belt squats are more of a quad dominant movement pattern, so it's important to include some posterior chain work.
It's a great substitute for people with injuries to the lower back or upper extremities.

I’ve tried many forms of weightlifting from bodybuilding to CrossFit and now powerlifting.

I enjoy the simplicity of just focusing on the 3 major lifts, which I’ve always liked doing anyway, the powerlifting exercise forms which are more forgiving on my injury-prone body, and the efficient programming planned by my knowledgable coach at Elevate gym, Clinton, to improve consistently cycle by cycle without beating myself too hard. I trust in Clinton’s expertise and experience to help me achieve my goals.
.
Getting strong isn’t, and shouldn’t be, so complex. Powerlifting provides the bare basics for me to acquire true strength, while helping me to keep my body healthy enough to lift longer.
.
Powerlifting has benefited me in many ways. For one, I’ve not had any major training injuries since I’ve started powerlifting... which is a huge deal! Being relatively injury-free enables me to continue to train and do what I like without any worries. .
When I’m stronger and healthier, I feel happier and more motivated to do better and this carries over to other parts of my life, be it at work or home.
.
Secondly, I love being a role model to my daughter to not only be fit physically, but also mentally as well. By seeing me persevering and progressing in this sport, despite the setbacks I might face, she learns that hard work pays off and to excel in something, you have to be disciplined and stay committed.
.
In fact, she is so inspired by my powerlifting journey that she said that she wants to join me to train at Elevate gym when she’s older!
.

When to call the audible:

Tried all day to get this sessions in earlier than 10pm, but other things just took precident: quick repair on failed float switch on backup sump during power outage, basement rearranging, and keeping kids cool and enjoying their Saturday. 
When I hit this warm up single (was suppose to be for 3 in first video), had a nice back spasms that didn't want to let go. 
Instead of waiting it out and pushing, decided to drop the weight and still push intensity with high reps- everything for sets of 20... Man I wanted to vomit 😫😭😩 Motto for the day: life is a marathon, not a Sprint. Build today for a better tomorrow.

High volume deadlifts have got to be the most miserable thing I’ve ever endured at the gym. 40 total reps is definitely a pr because in the past I might be close to doing 40 total reps in a entire block. Doing hookgrip for 40 reps is also not all that enjoyable either but I was so focused on catching my breath each set I just forgot how bad my thumbs hurt. 👍 Nothing crazy or fancy just doing what needs be done to get better.

Tessie was nearly in tears and I went to bad place during that 4th round. I’m sure it didn’t help that it was nearly 90 degrees out 😬. Tessie’s time was 9.54, mine was 8.05.

Tessie was nearly in tears and I went to bad place during that 4th round. I’m sure it didn’t help that it was nearly 90 degrees out 😬. Tessie’s time was 9.54, mine was 8.05.

The Sumo deadlift and conventional have their own unique attributes as exercises and we can see that through the analysis of some studies.  This can help you choose which exercise is best for you or how it should fit in your exercise routine. I incorporate both into my routine which you can get in at my website in the link above.

First, we’ll look at the muscle activation of both exercises; The firs thing to note is that the sumo deadlift does not work the adductors more than conventional. In fact, all though very minor and not significant the conventional had slightly more adductor activation probably since some adductors are powerful hip extensors. Next, we’ll look at muscles that are more active in the sumo DL; the vastus vastus lateralis & medialis had a significantly greater activation compared to the conventional deadlift as well as the tibialis anterior. On the other hand, the conventional deadlift had a higher medial gastric activation.

This is often a controversial topic whether the conventional deadlift requires more work, and it is true. When comparing the lift height of the bar and work done to the bar the conventional deadlift had a higher bar height and work done to it. We can put this to use, as sumo DL may not be as fatiguing and produce a similar activation as regular deadlifts so incorporating them can allow for higher volume to be accumulated.

Lastly, when comparing kinematics, the conventional deadlift had a much higher torque placed on the back, which would make it a poor exercise for someone with low back issues. On the other hand, the sumo DL allows for a more upright torso which is better for someone with back problems. The sumo deadlift had a higher knee moment compared to the conventional DL which would make it unsuitable for someone with knee pain, as well as ankle moment arm which may be a issue for someone with ankle mobility.

👉🏼 Foam rolling and Passive stretching temporarily allows an increase in range of motion due to neuro mechanisms. Essentially it tricks your brain to allow more mobility. If you have to do this everyday to get into a squat or any other position, then it probably is not a safe position to get into it. You should own the position that you are loading. You should master the position with just bodyweight before you start adding weight. Tune in to my story tomorrow morning for more detail.

Sorry, there is nothing sexy about your rotator cuff... BUT its health is absolutely vital in maximizing the performance of your more aesthetically pleasing muscles 😏
.It is composed of 4 muscles around your shoulder. As a whole they compress your humerus (upper arm bone) into the shoulder socket. They also abduct your arm (move it away), internally and externally rotate your humerus at the shoulder joint.
.
It is especially important for sports like baseball and tennis or jobs like painting or doing carpentry.. The tearing of one of the these muscles is common due to a traumatic event or repetitive use. Bursitis and tendinitis are also common problems.
.
Lower your risk of injury by warming up your rotator cuff muscles. The exercises above are a good place to start. Remember to use very light weight or low resistance bands.  They just need to be strengthened a bit and warmed up. Proper form is SO important when it comes to your horizontal and vertical pushing movements. Aim to keep your shoulders compressed and back into the socket. If it comes out, your shoulder is at risk
.
If your muscles are overly tight, make sure to stretch them regularly. You should be able to perform a wall slide (back against wall with elbows and wrists maintaining contact with the wall all the way up into a snow angel position)
