🤨 5 A M 🤨 it's gonna be a long day! ⠀

Anyone else have an early riser today? My 2 year old woke at 5am, thankfully, its rare but I can definitely feel the backs of my eyes this morning! 👀⠀

Maybe this is your every day though? It can be really tough going and one of the hardest sleep issues to crack...⠀

One really common reason clients come in for sleep support is often the early wakeup. You can handle this for so long but your baby becomes a toddler and it's perhaps been a couple of years and you can't take it anymore! Sound familiar? ⠀

👩‍⚕️The fact is, at 5am, science is against you. The melatonin in your little ones body is nearly depleted, so is the adenosin (aka sleep pressure). This means getting them to go back to sleep can be VERY tricky! ⠀

But don't loose faith, there are a few things you can do to ease the 5am wakeup! 😁⠀

✔️LISTEN to your little ones cry, is it a full blown cry or are they transitioning from one sleep cycle to the next? Unless you are worried about them, don't rush in just in case you wake them further. (A max time of 5 minutes is usually enough to figure out if they will settle back on their own or not!) ⠀

✔️KEEP IT BORING! Try to keep talking and noise to a minimum. Make it clear that it's still nighttime and not party time! Don't put any lights on and try and avoid the TV for ipad if you can. If this is a one off or infrequent, don't create new habits which mean they start waking early on a more regular basis! ⠀

✔️WAKEUP TIME: make mornings really exciting and over the top happy so that your baby starts noticing the difference between sleepy time and wake up time.⠀

✔️ BE CONSISTENT! whatever you do to see yourself through from 5am until your preferred wake up time (sometime around 10am right? 😉), just be consistant. It's better for your baby and you'll see changes happen eventually. Inconsistency can confuse them and make Sleep problems worse in the long run.⠀

Sleep is a vital indicator of overall health and well-being. We spend up to one-third of our lives asleep!
Getting more sleep is probably the single best change you can make to get yourself closer to your goals.

One of the best things you can do to ensure a good night sleep is to start prepping for it first thing in the morning by getting some sunlight. Research shows that bright lights stimulate the part of the brain that regulates your circadian rhythms.

Increasing your exposure to light during the day will help to synchronize your internal clock, which will boost your mood and alertness during the day and help you to sleep better at night.

I was at a kids dentist office for an appointment for my daughter. I was asked for a business card. Well jeeze I have been in this business for 2 decades and cant for the life of me remember the last time someone asked me for a business card. It seems like it was like 10 years ago. It seems like every.thing Is on social media.
Anyhoo, I decided since I was asked I will print up some business cards once again. Do people still carry business cards? Thoughts? I honestly thought everything now is on fb or insta. Why CBD needs THC to effectively induce sleep 😴

Despite what a lot of the products on the market will tell you, CBD alone *has not* been found to help you sleep. In fact, many studies have shown that #CBD in low doses actually keeps the mind awake and alert, which as many of you know, is not optimal for sleep. Although, one study did show that at a dose of least 160mg CBD may increase total sleep time and decrease stirrings. But that’s a lot of CBD...

THC can make you feel drowsy, sleepy and catatonic (a significant decrease in someone’s reactivity to their environment). This is very useful for people with hyperactivity or restless legs syndrome. However, #THC alone can also produce anxiety, euphoria or paranoia.

When balanced in perfect synergy with one another, THC does the legwork of lulling you to sleep as the CBD wards off potential anxiety and calms a frantic mind. It’s this teamwork makes the dream work 👍🏽

Sometimes you just need a lazy Sunday to recover from the week 😴 Did you know that cats sleep an average of 15 hours a day with some cats sleeping up to 20? With only a few species sleeping more! Even though they sleep for such a long time, they tend to do so in multiple naps through the day, allowing them to wake up quickly when needed to catch prey (or get cuddles❤️) pretty clever😍

All those people you know who can function and thrive on half the sleep you need might be getting a bit of biological help. Scientists found a gene mutation that allows "short sleepers" to feel rested on 4-6 hours a night

By studying a father-son duo who need just four and five and a half hours respectively, the research team was able to limit their focus to genes the two had in common. Eventually, they found a single-letter mutation in the NPSR1 gene, which codes for a particular neuron receptor. Earlier research had shown that activating that receptor helps keep people awake.

Next, they bred mice with the mutation and examined their sleep patterns. The mutated mice slept for shorter periods, and still also behaved normally, just like the father and son. -
The mutation is rare, only one in four million people have it. It is likely the gene helps people sleep more efficiently. While most of us need around eight hours of sleep to be in tiptop shape, short sleepers only require between four and six hours to function just as well. You should really get more sleep. A new study has found out how our bodies clear toxins out of our brains while we sleep—and the discovery could open new avenues for treating and preventing neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. -
Led by Laura Lewis and her team of researchers at Boston University Lab, the study looked at non-REM sleep, which generally happens early in the night. Lewis and her team discovered that during this stage, neurons start to synchronize, turning on and off at the same time. Because the neurons all momentarily stopped firing, they don't need as much oxygen. That means less blood flows to the brain and cerebrospinal fluid rushed in to fill in the space left behind. Those large, slow waves of cerebrospinal fluid act like a cranial cleaning solution. -
Since neurons don't all turn off at the same time when we're awake, brain blood levels don't drop enough to allow substantial waves of cerebrospinal fluid to circulate around the brain and clear out all the metabolic byproducts that accumulate. With this study's findings, instead of trying to act on one particular molecule or byproduct, new interventions might instead focus on increasing the amount of cerebrospinal fluid that washes over the brain. Infant Mental Health Awareness Week will be the theme of our posts this week. This is one of the huge reasons we do what we do because mental health matters for ALL whether 9 months or 99 years. Being born just puts your baby on the other side of your skin. Your body is still essential to her well-being. She draws her security and stability form your smell, your feel, your voice, the rise and fall of your chest, and your heartbeat. Without you, her own breathing and heart rate are less stable and her stress level rises. The two of you share an immune system, hormonal patterns, and daily rhythms. You respond to the distress in her cry with distress of your own and a powerful urge to tend to her. When she breastfeeds, she feels relief from hunger or discomfort, and you feel relaxation and relief from the fullness in your breasts. A win-win. – Sweet Sleep
