When you are breastfeeding for the first time, it feels like you need to have 8 hands.....one to support baby's head, one to hold your breast, one to keep baby's hands out of the way, etc. It's always fantastic when daddy gets right in there and helps!

👶🏾"I've got a job to do, @Barbie!"🤱🏾😆😆😆🎥@iamprincessruby_ But seriously...
_
Your baby's one and only job when they are born is to learn to express your milk into their belly with their mouth. It will take much patience from the parents and family because this is a learned skill. There are many hangups and obstacles on the road to attaining that comfortable #firstlatch. Here are some tips for all the new families following this post💪🏾
_
💦 Offer skin to skin to your baby all day and night for the first two weeks (just like Barbie 😆)
_
💦 Hand express a tablespoon of colostrum milk after each feeding to make sure the breast is empty
_
💦 Feed baby on demand, everywhere and anywhere to ensure that baby's additional requests like creating more supply, giving notice of nutritional deficiency, or making the breasts aware of an incoming infection is possible.
_
ℹ️Remember, your breasts are organs that respond to your baby's requests. They communicate with the saliva in your baby's mouth to stay up to date on what's going on in baby's body. When in doubt, put baby skin to skin with a diaper only and wait until they are ready to latch and feed.

Tummy time 💪🏼. This is the foundation for basically all future development.
Lack of tummy time may lead to difficulties or delays in: • rolling • crawling • moving in and out of sitting • coordination • walking • eating • visual motor integration • fine motor skills • language development • reflex integration • proprioception • balance • and could lead to plagiocephaly (flat spot on the head). 👶🏻
*Make sure baby is getting sufficient tummy time every day to ensure they meet all their mini and big milestones. *Tummy time doesn’t just have to look like baby on the ground on their belly. It can be skin to skin baby on your chest, baby carrying, baby on your lap on their tummy, football hold (baby facing down on your forearm), etc.
Tummy time is so important as it builds to so many other skills. .
I will post more later on when to start tummy time, different ways to do tummy time, and how to keep baby happy/content during tummy time! 💕 .

Don't put me down!
Babies like to he close to their food source, warmth and affection. I previously spoke about the fourth trimester and this is a pretty good description of how it works!
Babies don't understand why they have been separated from you and they don't like it. Remember that you cannot spoil a newborn baby from holding them lots.
.
Those first few months can be super tough (believe me I've been there a few times) but if you are pregnant with your first baby, expect that the initially you won't get much done other than caring for your newborn.
.
Try and enlist as much support as you can and prioritise - what really needs to be done at home and what can wait. I find that using a sling to wear your baby can be a life saver at times! .

The many benefits of skin-to-skin contact don’t stop at Mom! Dads should also be excited to get in on the action! A research team from the University of Notre Dame found that 30 minutes of Dad & Baby skin-to-skin time increases dopamine and oxytocin, both important bonding hormones. It was found that these hormonal releases can even "rewire dads' brains" and "kickstart their parenting instincts," affecting how they will parent in the future!⁣

So today was our sing along baby yoga recording at @nurturenookessex with the amazing Dani. We recorded all our baby yoga songs to share with our teachers so they can share with their parents. Love creates love! We love to create new resources and share because that’s how you make an impact by genuinely helping other people to shine bright and do their best in the world. Coming to a sound cloud account near you very soon. PS @nurturenookessex is an incredible baby born by Dani less than a year ago to help mothers and babies. We think she is an angel and if you are in Rayleigh or nearby go and check out everything she offers.

He had a pee accident and then refused to let me put clothes back on him. So we cuddled like this for about 15 minutes and it needed to be documented, even if it’s blurry. (Side note: why does Apple insist on making my camera junk every single time they release the new phones...is it just my phone?!) #henrikandme #minime #selfportrait #skintoskin

"🤱🏼Breastfeeding Festival 🤱🏼

I’ve just spent two days with these two at @breastfestmk

We listened to many fantastic speakers⠀
@doulamaddie spoke about the forces at work sabotaging breastfeeding parents. ⠀
Ruth Dennison spoke about breastfeeding in the black community and how we need more inclusivity. ⠀
We heard from an amazing organisation in North London, Manor Gardens Centre. They do much needed work with families, especially those where English isn’t their first language. ⠀
We then got some good tips to help with babies that won’t latch. ⠀

Before bed, we had a lovely child free dinner at Zizzi, drank wine, then went back to express! 😂 the irony of leaving the breastfed children at home for a boob festival was not lost. ⠀

Today we’ve heard about breastfeeding aversion, which is not as uncommon as people think. ⠀
Mars Lord spoke about how inclusivity is needed. NOW. We need to change the awful statistics that black women are 5x more likely to die in pregnancy than white women. It should not be happening. Not ever. ⠀
Then it was @louisebfc about her project, diversity in infant feeding. She’s doing wonderful work getting image representation for everyone. ⠀
Parenting science gang spoke about their brilliant research into properties of breastmilk for different ages of child. ⠀
And finally we had Lyndsey Hookway speaking about normal night waking. ⠀

We ate tasty treats from @the_fat_mallow_co
Bought pins from @milkandmoonuk which are wonderful. ⠀

It’s been busy but humbling and fulfilling. ⠀

We have our breastfeeding group on Monday in Basildon, if you’d like to join us, you’re very welcome. "

🔹️boca bien abierta agarrando pezón y areola.
.
Aguante la teta! .

Latching a Neonate
Photo: @elliana_allon
Some babies are born with their little tongue clicking away as if they’re sucking, other babies, not so much...
To preface: I’m yet to have children of my own. When I first began the degree I thought breastfeeding was a walk in the park. I had the mentality of “it’ll work or it won’t”. We had learned about breastfeeding at uni, latch techniques and feeding cues. I didn’t understand just how difficult (and frustrating) it can be to try and help a woman to latch her baby. Here are my personalised tips: -never underestimate the power of true skin to skin. If your baby in question needs to feed (some indications for this include: GDM, SGA, LGA or babies who you query to be hypoglycaemic- often overly sleepy or jittery) undress baby and mummy and facilitate uninterrupted skin to skin. This facilitates oxytocin and prolactin release in Mum and baby is receptive to this. You can also try expressing some milk onto the nipple. Baby can smell/taste this and this may interest them to feed.
-ensure the woman is positioned in a way that she is comfortable, her neck is not strained and where she can see her babies face. Although it sounds simple this is essential. Hospital beds are a breastfeeding woman’s worst nightmare, sit the bed up as much as possible, pop the guard rails up and place a pillow beneath whichever arm that correlates with the breast you will be feeding on. The pillow supports the woman’s arm and ensures comfort. -try the hands off method: instruct the woman to use her opposite hand to sweep her nipple across babies lips and below their nose. Point out feeding cues such as an open mouth, clicking tongue or seeking behaviour. When the mouth is open wide, show mum that this is the mouth that we are looking for for an efficient latch.
-hands on: try and allow mum to do the majority of the work. If you need to use hands, either direct the nipple over babies lips whilst mum holds their little head (work together to latch baby when they exhibit the open mouth) OR hold the baby’s head while Mum holds the nipple.

This week’s sharing session has just gone live on Facebook. Photos! How to handle this in class.

First consent is key for any photography. This is a must to make parents feel safe and protect their privacy
2. Phones in class-how do you feel about this. I tend to trust and empower my parents to make a decision on this and I never take away anyone’s phone
3. Professional photography in class can enhance your clients experience and be a selling point for your classes but be mindful that it is non intrusive and natural
4. Taking a photo at the end of a class can be a lovely idea especially if you frame it as a gift for clients but again get consent if you share any of these photos with others or social media.
Photos are powerful and can enhance your classes but they can also lead to complications so think carefully about how and why you have them so that everyone feels safe and secure. Check out my Facebook live on this today and if you want to know more tips like this, join our growing babies and business with love course. It opens up the door to so many new things ♡

That first feed 🤱🏽

This beautiful family welcomed this gorgeous baby girl after two sons.

Each birth I attend seems to show me something different and teaches me something new. This birth was the first time I had seen a physiological third stage (birth of the placenta)! How amazing are our bodies when left undisturbed ♥️

Love this from @raising.babies.confidently on the benefits of skin to skin!! 💓⁣

Whether your baby is less than an hour old or two months old, skin to skin can be so beneficial for mom and baby.⁣

You’ve probably already heard of the importance of skin-to-skin during the first hour of baby’s life. Basically, you place baby on your bare chest during the "golden hour." Baby can still wear a diaper and wear a blanket over his back, but you want to encourage as much skin to skin contact as possible. The goal is to lay like this, uninterrupted, for an hour.⁣

This practice promotes colostrum production, regulates baby’s breathing, temperature, heartbeat, and blood sugar, and increases your oxytocin levels (which encourages bonding).⁣

BUT, did you know that skin to skin is extremely beneficial AFTER you leave the hospital too?⁣

You can use skin to skin to help dad bond with baby, increase your milk production, and improve postpartum depression. Research has also hinted that skin to skin can even enhance baby’s mental development!⁣

All this to say, if you ever need an excuse to snuggle with your little squishy, THIS IS IT!⁣

What do you think about skin to skin or kangaroo care? I LOVE it and still do this with my 2.5 year old sometimes!!⁣

It all starts here .. the #foundation , the basics. I can not stress enough how important it is to have fabrics that can empower us! ( not make us look ashy, red or any tone that is not ours) this is why I do what I do.. to create garments that make sense to us! Not what a factory defines as “nude” or “ beautiful” ; it’s about finding what works and making it 10000 X better. - @simone.vanessaa

Skin to skin contact with your newborn has many benefits.
It can help calm you and your baby and help your baby cry less.
It can release hormones that relieve stress and stabilize a baby's body temperature, breathing rate, heart rate, and blood sugar.
It can help your colostrum flow more easily.
It can boost a baby's immune system and help baby gain weight faster.
It can help mothers breastfeed longer by building her milk supply.
.
.
.
.
We encourage skin to skin contact not just right after birth but in those precious first few months.
Remember, Dads can also hold babies skin to skin! .

Indignante!!!

🤱🏼Breastfeeding Festival 🤱🏼

#breastfestmk #parentingsciencegang #manorgardenscentre #abm #feedon #skintoskin #celebratebreastfeeding #allourhealth #cuddlethem #itsnormal #responsivefeeding #protectbreastfeeding #normalisebreastfeeding #breastfeedingeducation

Parenting science gang spoke about their brilliant research into properties of breastmilk for different ages of child. ⠀
And finally we had Lyndsey Hookway speaking about normal night waking. ⠀
⠀
We ate tasty treats from @the_fat_mallow_co ⠀
Bought pins from @milkandmoonuk which are wonderful. ⠀
⠀
It’s been busy but humbling and fulfilling. ⠀
⠀
We have our breastfeeding group on Monday in Basildon, if you’d like to join us, you’re very welcome. #breastfestmk #parentingsciencegang #manorgardenscentre #abm #feedon #skintoskin #celebratebreastfeeding #allourhealth #cuddlethem #itsnormal #responsivefeeding #protectbreastfeeding #normalisebreastfeeding #breastfeedingeducation

One of the most fascinating journal articles I came across when researching for the Good Science Guides Sleep Series was that responsiveness in infancy can impact the development of self- vs species-preservation. Let’s dig a little deeper.⠀
▫️⠀
“Studying the impacts of stress in infancy on adult affiliative behavior, researchers describe two distinct types of mammalian preservative behaviors: self-preservation and species-preservation.⠀
▫️⠀
Gonadal steroids and oxytocin are essential for normal attachment behavior to unfold throughout infancy & childhood. A lack of attachment behaviour is associated with maladaptive interpersonal patterns and psychiatric disorders. So, how do these behaviors unfold?⠀
▫️⠀
When a child is distressed and a parent responds appropriately, gonadal steroids along with oxytocin are released. With repetition & consistency, these actions & reactions lay healthy foundations for affiliative attachment behavior. On the other hand, when a child experiences stress and is not responded to, gonadotrophins are diminished, and the fight-flight response takes over, which favours pathways for self-preservation being prioritized.⠀
▫️⠀
Self-preservation is associated with left hemispheric brain function, whereas species preservation is associated with right hemispheric function. Stress during infancy - severe enough to create insecure attachment - has a dissociative effect disrupting right hemispheric emotional functioning and creating a shift towards self-preservative behavior. What impact does this have?⠀
▫️⠀
It results in a permanent bias towards self-preservation that may become an adult trait. The Type A behavior pattern is thought, at least in part, to be the result of hormonal pathways, established during infancy, that favor self-preservation over species-preservation."⠀
▫️⠀
So respond to your child without a second thought. Your tender care is filling not only an immediate need but also a greater purpose. And remember "One generation of deeply loving parents would change the brain of the next generation, and with that, the world." Charles Raison.⠀

we are so over the moon excited about this post from @shelovestoglow 🥰 “Skin to skin is my love language. When I first placed beau on my chest, I made sure I didn’t have a towel, blanket or gown on so there wasn’t anything blocking us from having our first embrace. @adenandanais made a bonding top that has changed things for me this time around. I’m so happy I have this top with baby number 2...because it’s made our bonding so natural. ✨ I’m honestly so overwhelmed with gratitude every time I wear beau in it. I feel his every little breath, kick, coo, yawn. If you’re like me, and loved pregnancy...get yourself one of these, because it honestly feels like they’re back in the womb...but you get to kiss their face! 🥰 Do you love to baby wear like me? I’m doing it a lot more than I did with Leo...cuz hello toddlerhood.”

I didn’t breastfeed Jaylen ( #TeenBae) because I didn’t know any better. After an unnecessary “emergency c-section”, the nurses gave me enfamil with iron and sent me on my way. And me being 16, I didn’t question it because the drs and nurses obviously knew best.

When l conceived Nick 11 years later, I was much more informed, and wanted to approach childbirth and feeding naturally. While my VBAC was unsuccessful, post op, they brought #PRinceNick to me for #skintoskin, and a #lactationconsultant guided us with our first latch. It was effortless and perfect. I nursed Nick for 8 months.

Thankfully, #FancyFaye also latched like a pro. Our minor nursing struggles aside (engorgement, 5 weeks of cracked nipples/mastitis-ish symptoms), its been a beautiful experience thus far and I’m striving to nurse for at least a year. I’m awed and empowered by my body’s capability of nourishing my baby with a perfectly designed food, and I don’t take it for granted. I hope to encourage other women - specifically black women - to also breastfeed freely. So I’m happy to support @blkbfingweek’s initiative , and look forward to hosting and providing breastfeeding resources at @districtmotherhued’s ‘Boobs In The Park’ event next Saturday, sponsored by @spectrababyusa, @lansinohusa, @kiinde, @earthmamaorganics, @motherloveherb @mommyknowsbest. Happy #blackbreastfeedingweek!! 🤱🏿 #BlackMomsBreastfeed #normalizebreastfeeding #BlackMomMagic #CommMoms xoxo
