This training cycle has definitely become whatever I want to do. Today I wanted to run to a hiking spot and back today. It felt really good. I know Philadelphia won’t be a PR. That doesn’t feel bad. I’ve done great things this year. Keep on keepin’ on, friends :)

I took a few moments to reflect today. Reflect on where I was 1 year ago, and everything that brought me to today.

This time last year I felt depressed, broken, without direction. Every injury is different, but they all take a similar mental toll on an athlete. Take away a person’s outlet, drive, purpose, and you take away a piece of their soul.
.
Again, I must thank all of you who supported me and encouraged me during that time. It was hard, but you made it a little easier.
.
I started in January with the goal of running 10k without pain. Gradually I worked up to 21k by June. The process was not linear, but I was always moving forward. The whole time I had in the back of my mind that I wanted to conquer another marathon. I questioned whether my body would allow it, and slowly crept up my runs without revealing my plan.
.
My first marathon was rough. I ran it in Toronto with my husband back in 2015. We started training early in the summer with no real base, and we both had one simple goal: to run 42k. I crossed the finish line at 4:25, tears streaming down my face, proud of my accomplishment, but also vowing not to do another.
.
There is nothing like being told you CAN’T to make you say I WILL. I can’t run? Watch me.
.
I have never trained as hard as I have over the last 16 weeks, and I have never been more proud of how far I have come as a runner. I pushed myself beyond what I thought I was capable of, and finished every run thirsting for more. Faster. Farther. Stronger.
.
Of course, life is never simple. Sometimes it rains on race day, but in my case I fell last week and bruised my ribs. Yup. It hurts to breathe deeply. All I can do at this point is shake my head and hope that by Sunday everything will be okay.
.
Whatever happens on race day, nothing can take away the feeling of accomplishment that comes with a successful training cycle. I’m grateful for every win and every fall because these are the things that have made me the runner I am.

Well one of us survived today’s workout a little better than the other 🐶🥰I wanted to get a 5k in - which was basically mile repeats with a little bit of stretching in between - before today’s Taco Thursday and I did!! I know most people gorge on tacos on Tuesday, but it’s so much easier to get through just a Friday after margaritas than Wednesday, Thursday And Friday 🤣 Anyone else agree? Anyways, happy Thursday!! 🍹🌮

I never dreamed I would be doing this but I finally accomplished my first Brick Workout. It felt pretty awesome.
I love my new outlook with training and rebuilding. My body seems foreign to what used to be a breeze for me but I know it is all in good timing. Just here to celebrate the small victories on the road to recovery.

When I first started running, I had fat legs. Then after awhile of just running, my legs got skinny. When I added in strength training, my legs became muscular. It is so important to work on your strength as much as your stamina and speed. You can't just run 7 days a week and expect to get anywhere. Have a rest day. Have a strength day. Crush your goals.

Sometimes runs are therapy. Sometimes it’s about hitting a pace, or reaching for a PR, or going the furthest you’ve ever gone....and sometimes that run is because if you run TODAY, your run weekend run will suck less. Guess which one today was? 😂
I will admit (irritating though it may be) that the wheels fell off a bit in the last few weeks, especially after my crazy-fun running weekend at Rock N Roll San Jose. I’ve been a hot mess, and all over the place (see, it happens to everyone) and training fell to last priority on the ever growing list of To-Do’s. Life happens, right?
So yeah, it’s been a minute since I ran, and that’s why it was super important to get today’s run in - so the crappy parts (I envisioned myself like a cartoon character where springs and sprockets kept bouncing off as things fell apart) happened TODAY and not this weekend - which just so happens to be race day. This is what my countertop looks like on any given morning. 😂
This morning I woke up with a headache, it was throbbing but definitely wasn’t at “migraine level” yet. So I did what I knew to do. I used my oils 👍🏻 6 months ago I would have grabbed my Tylenol/ibuprofen, a caffeine drink, went to Krispy Kreme, etc... But now I treat my body like it should be treated. I knew I needed some protein, oils, and water. And to support my body.
The headache itself went away around 2 o clock. It was never a severe headache and definitely never turned to a migraine. But this afternoon I knew I couldn’t run the 2.5 miles that was on my agenda. So I walked. I got an Epsom salt bath and I allowed my body to rest and to relax.
Running can wait. My health and well being cannot.
Sometime you just gotta rest. And that’s ok too ❤️

Kiawah Island Marathon

When I first started running, my first born child was 6 months old. I was out of shape and could barely run 3 miles without stopping😳. I met a group of ladies at our local @ymcagvl twice a week for a 5 mile run and on the trail (which wasn’t even paved yet!) for a wkend longish run. I was the slowest (and probably youngest🙈) in the pack! I signed up for my very first half marathon in Myrtle Beach with these goals: a sub 2 and no walking. I didn’t think I could do it at first. But I believed in myself, put in the work, and kept moving forward🙌🏻. I ran my first half marathon in 1:54, without stopping and I was over the moon😁. This was when I fell in love with the sport❤️. .
.
My dedication and discipline for running has grown so much over the years. I never thought I’d run a marathon, must less qualify for Boston or NYC marathons. I was also totally surprised to snag a spot in the SC road race rankings last year. I’m proud to say that I’ve run some pretty bad ass PRS in the past year. I’m not saying all this to brag, but to inspire. I’ve worked hard for all these things, I’ve put in the work, I’ve remained consistent, and I’ve kept pushing onward😉. I’ve had my fair share of heartbreak and let downs too- times where I just wanted to quit running altogether and throw in the towel. A major stress fracture (missing my first Boston) that helped me reevaluate some things and forced me to appreciate the fact that I’m still able to run. My second Boston Marathon (where I totally fell apart) taught me that bad races happen even when your training goes absolutely perfect. And bad training runs have left me in tears, feeling serious def doubt- but I’ve had to learn that those runs are building blocks and only make me better.

It all comes down to believing in yourself. That you are capable of anything you set your mind to. With discipline, consistency, and positive self talk- anything is possible❤️. So next time you say “I can’t do that”, replace it with “I will do that and I will work my ass off to get there”. Because y’all- you’re so much more than you think and your mind is so much more powerful than you know. Get out there and inspire, motivate, and challenge😘

Good late run. Went for my personal best 5k tonight. The wind was blowing tree branches to ground and I had a brief encounter with a red fox that wouldn't back away, that's weird because usually they run away quickly.
This training season is going really well, my body feels strong n relaxed and with winter right around the corner I'm going to continue enjoying this weather on the trail. ✌🏼

On a side note, I’ve been shopping around for maybe 2 or 3 half marathons to run this upcoming spring. If anyone has any recommendations or ideas for races, let me know! I’m open to a little travel if need be, ideally something budget friendly though. I’m itching to get back in that training routine with winter around the corner. So please please leave your recommendations. They’re greatly appreciated!

#tbt to a week ago. I did my final easy run, 40 minutes with my coach @nklastava, and asked about a race plan. As a background, when I finished my training cycle for Coastal Delaware in the spring, I wasn't quite sure where I wanted the rest of my year to go. Won't lie, I was a little hesitant when I first decided to get a new coach. I was getting used to a new grueling job schedule and frequent travel, was a little burnt out from spring marathon training, dealing with an ankle injury, and then had a flare up of Lyme Disease which took me out of training for a few weeks. It was the definition of a rough summer. Nonetheless, Nick would adjust my schedule, would text me encouragement when I had both "good" and "bad" runs, and this all culminated with our final run last week, when he reminded me that I put my heart and soul into this training cycle and was ready to rock the #chicagomarathon . I went into this race with not much of a formal plan so much as to celebrate all of the miles I put in and just enjoy the journey knowing I had so much support behind me from friends, family, and an amazing coach. Cheers to everyone who made it to the end of this sappy post and suppported my journey. I did an out and back run and I was on the lookout for running into this rattle snake on the way back but it was gone. It wasn’t aggressive and was just hanging out but it did scare me because I wasn’t expecting it! I think this is snake sighting number 8 of 2019. .

What a great day to run! 2:23:08 in the Chicago Marathon! So much love and support from friends, family and my coach who has believed in me before I even believed in myself.

My goals changed a lot leading up to the race. I didn’t want to share because I was not sure how today was going to go. A week before race day my coach and I decided on what to do, shoot for 2:22:xx and worry about an OTQ later. What a great day to run! 2:23:08 in the Chicago Marathon! So much love and support from friends, family and my coach who has believed in me before I even believed in myself.

My goals changed a lot leading up to the race. I didn’t want to share because I was not sure how today was going to go. A week before race day my coach and I decided on what to do, shoot for 2:22:xx and worry about an OTQ later. I executed our plan perfectly, I was within 10 seconds of the time I was shooting for with a 12 second negative split. I ran hard, felt great and had a blast doing it!

J’aime penser que les femmes et les hommes sont égaux face au sport, qu’on n’a pas à rougir de nos perfs face aux leurs, et que courir ne devrait pas être une activité qui se pratique uniquement entre meumeufs ou entre bonhommes, la preuve j’ai autant de copines de baskets que de copains, et ma foi je cours plus vite ou plus loin que certains 😛🙃. Mais il faut avouer qu’on a chacuns nos petites problématiques à part, et chez les filles c’est bien souvent la brassière qui fait débat.
J’ai la chance d’avoir des #boobz suffisamment petits pour ne pas trop m’en préoccuper 🙈, mais je sais que pour certaines d’entre vous c’est un sujet hyper important ! Du coup j’ai accepté de tester le soutien-gorge de sport de Shock Absorber que je mets à l’épreuve depuis déjà quelques semaines : un super maintien même sur les séances de fractionné 💥, un séchage rapide en cas de transpiration 💦, et en plus il est plutôt joli 💜, bref un combo gagnant ! 🙌

Et vous, c’est quoi le petit truc super important qui fait la différence dans votre tenue de sport ?

I post this as a reminder that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. You just have to believe that you’re capable, work for it and never give up. Results come to those who work for it but they don’t come overnight. It takes work and commitment. The key is consistency and planning. It’s easy to say I have no time, I’m too busy, etc. But if you want it hard enough you can find time. Two years between these two marathons. On the left - my first 26.2.
