Not sure how to feel about this. On the one hand, there's that extra line about the positive response. But on the other, it's still a rejection. What I do know is that I have to keep putting myself out there to get to yes. Maybe this is the motivation I need to get out of my writing slump. 🤷🏿‍♀️#writers #writersofinstagram #writingcommunity #rejectionletter #workingtheplan

My first manuscript rejection letter circa 2010. The best part is the lack of signature or even editor's name.
The book never saw publication, but I successfully used the material with my students, who were there reason I wrote it in the first place.

You can’t expect to grow without putting yourself in uncomfortable situations, and I’ve avoided them for far too long.
I’m choosing to see the steady stream of rejection letters as proof that I’m finally doing what I should have been doing all along. Apply, apply, apply. .
.
.
They still suck though.

Rejected. It’s possible that they send this form letter to everyone who submits a short story, but I’m gonna assume they mean it personally when they call my writing high quality. 😎 #themastersreview

A few months ago @medschooladmissions messaged me inquiring about my admission process to my career field. Initially I thought their mission was to dispel tips and tricks for premed students only, but I found out that they publish posts to provide insight on multiple allied health and medical careers. In the post ➡️( https://blog.accepted.com/what-does-it-mean-to-be-an-occupational-therapist/ ⬅️) you can read about my story, why I chose to pursue OT, my experiences, my definition of OT, how I explain the differences of PT vs OT, and my admission process. Enjoy!! Take a few minutes and give it a read (sorry no swipey up feature) If anything speaks to you, I’d love for you to comment below!! Here’s a little glimpse:
Question: What made you decide to pursue a career as an occupational therapist? Was there a particular person or event that inspired you to choose this path?

Shannen: A combination of different events ultimately led to me leaning toward pursuing occupational therapy as my career field. Here are two examples of many that facilitated my passion and enabled me to narrow down some of my alternate career interests.
As a young child I thought that I wanted to be both a pediatrician and a princess, and later considered being an orthodontist; as an adolescent, due in part to my hyperactivity and eagerness to be involved in multiple sports, I also considered a career in athletic training or physical therapy. All of these career interests developed out of my consistent passion and interest for people, health, fitness, and overall wellness, and concurrently, in combination with my personal positive experiences as a patient/client within those aforementioned fields. However, for me something was always missing the mark. I learned that I did not want to go nor did I feel compelled to pursue medical school nor did I want to go to dental school with additional schooling for orthodontics. As an athlete throughout childhood and a Varsity four sport year-round athlete throughout high school (cross country, cheerleading, soccer, track) as well as a collegiate runner, it just... Two lesbian writer rejection letters I stumbled upon this summer. The Stein one feels funny at first, but you return to it a few days later & realize that this editor was more like a clever child than an effective ironist... at least that’s what I felt. Alison Bechtel’s, in contrast, feels funnier as it ripens. But that’s the difference between what a major poet does v. what a noncreative literary parasite tries to do. #rejectionletter

Everyone talks about dealing with the fear of rejection and overcoming rejection. But, what about the rest of us who are somewhere in between? To me, this is when rejection becomes your personal practice.⠀

A question I have for all artists. I have a growing collection myself and wonder sometimes if I should just toss them. I’m not deterred, I believe in my art and myself and will continue on. I guess I keep those rejections as motivation. How about you? Do you keep those rejection letters and emails?

Before his whimsical characters at The Night before Christmas became famous, Disney rejected The Giant Zlig, Tim Burton’s illustrated children’s book.

This early rejection didn’t faze him. After graduating with a major in animation, Disney accepted Tim as an apprentice animator in 1980. He eventually set up his own studio and went on to direct hits like Batman and Edward Scissorhands.

I heard back from my first, and first choice, publisher today! The good news: they actually got back to me...in less than two weeks. The bad news: they are not interested in my book. I’m not sad about it, and I’m less disappointed than I thought I would be. I’m feeling grateful that they actually responded and now I will move forward pursuing the next four on my list. -

I started submitting my writing and pitches to literary journals, magazines and online outlets this year. I got a couple of things published, but largely, it's been rejection - So. Much. Rejection.
Perhaps some people get to the point where they are desensitized to the rejection and with each new "Thanks, but no thanks" they can just shrug it off and move on. I am not there. I don't know if I ever will be. Every rejection hurts and self doubt always gurgles up. Then, it takes me a bit of time.to get the courage to submit or resubmit and really even get down to writing again

That said, this here is just about the nicest, most encouraging rejection I have gotten to date. So encouraging, I actually turned around and tried to submit another piece immediately. They were closed for submissions, but as soon as they open, I am on it.

Bought a new notebook today because I got the most awesome rejection letter EVER yesterday! I am doing something right. This came from an awesome market. Read this!

Omg! Omg! Omg! Best rejection letter ever and I am sharing it, minus the editor's name and the publication because it is THAT awesome! If your eardrums are bursting, it's me squealing because of the market this rejection letter came from. I am THAT CLOSE to breaking through where I can play with all the big dogs! EEEEEK! *does happy Kermit the Frog dance*

So your story made the shortlist and that is awesome. We get a ton of submissions every day, and making it to the shortlist means you impressed three different editors.
I would love to be able to publish all the stories that get shortlisted, but unfortunately, I can't. There's this space constraint thing I have to deal with. Think about it, out of all the hundreds of stories we get, I can only take 7 every three months. That's like only accepting two stories out of 100 each month.
This time, it wasn't in the cards for this particular story. BUT, it doesn't mean that your story sucked. It obviously had to be good enough to get this far. I urge you to resubmit. I actually demand that you resubmit. Okay, I don't demand anything, but I would love to see more of your writing.

Reasons I love Korea no.156 - this rejection letter for an internship my roommate received. Isn't it just the best thing ever? 🤗👏 It roughly reads: "I'm in charge of ***** global internship.
First of all, I would like to express my sincere thanks for your interest in applying for our internship program.

And... I'm very sorry, too.

Despite your passion and potential, I have no choice but to tell you the sad news this time.

I'm not going to say anything to comfort you.

The passion and sincerity contained in the application form continue to be on my mind, so I would like to express my regret in a short letter.

I know you've been working hard for days and days, fixing and fixing your application form from the beginning to the final submission.

I've been through the same period as you, and I know how painful it is to support each company and to wait for the consequences.

And again, if I had applied with you, I would have been able to pass the exam, and I was so impressed and appalled by your resume and essay.

In retrospect, I experienced numerous graffiti in paperwork and interviews, and I felt my initial boldness was so weak that I gradually despised myself.

Maybe that's why I feel so heavy and sad to give you this news!

There is a saying, "Peach and chestnut take three years, persimmon takes eight years." Which tastes better. Just as it is a subject matter that cannot be objectively defined, I hope you will remember that your excellence and potential will not change, regardless of the results of our document screening!!! And from the perspective of a life-time leader who's lived a little longer, I think there's a different time for everything. It's like the right time for peaches and persimmons is different.

I hope your relationship with ***** will be established in any shape not too far away, and I hope the results of this document screening will be an opportunity for you to be vomited.

Until then, ***** will continue to grow and prepare for a good relationship with you through more opportunities.

I thank you again and again for your interest."

At the time, I was 18 years old, and hoping to go in an art school. Which I did, by the way. I was drawing little comic strips, that I was thinking funny.
•
Filled with teenage bravery, I sent the boards to Fluide, and expected to be published (It’s wonderful how naïve and cocky you can be at 18, no ?)
•
I wasn’t published. But I did receive this letter. Which I keep in my office since then, as it’s a treasure to me.
•
It’s a rejection letter. But a beautiful one. It basically said that the boards didn’t fit with the editorial line, and that I shouldn’t be discouraged. It also ends with these words : « Work, and more work »
•
16 years later, they still echoes. They are a reminder of the most basic, simple, down to earth truth out there : nothing comes without work. Sure, you can have luck, or help down the way. But without work, you’ll have nada.
•
It’s so simple, that it’s the piece most forgotten. Because it’s the hardest one.
•
I wanted to share this with you. It’s the letter I read when times get tough, and I feel low. I keep it because it always give me a kick in the ass. •
Yep. Work. And more work. I should get this one tattooed.

🚨 Long post ahead, but it may inspire you, as much as it still fuels me :)

How do you handle rejection letters? I have learned to take them in stride...it's truly not personal, and if I believe in a story, I just look for the next place to submit it to. Hitting a patch of rejections will fade to a memory when the next acceptance comes in. How many stories do you expect to publish in a year? The time writing, editing, submitting... rinse and repeat...hitting four a year is what I aim for. #itsallgood

Got a really solid rejection a couple weeks ago.
Got some good insights out of it.
No need to ask permission to pursue your dreams.

Found this on Reddit months ago and initially posted it on my personal Instagram account. This is a rejection letter from Faber & Faber to George Orwell regarding ‘Animal Farm.’ It’s an interesting read considering the subject matter of the book and how influential the text turned out to be. Also a strong example of writerly perseverance. #georgeorwell #animalfarm #rejectionletter #faberandfaber #publishing #reddit 🍄

Sometimes we just need to be reminded... whether it’s a job, a relationship, school, whatever—if it didn’t work out, there’s something better coming. Don’t give up. 💜🌴☀️

Guys, great news! I had a chat with the phenomenal @syncityng recently (link in bio). 🙌 And in keeping with my extra and self-obsessed personality, I have pasted one of my quotes from the interview, against a cliché nature-inspired picture...you know, like they do for smart people. 😁 Go check it out!

I’m not going to lie and say that it doesn’t get frustrating, but I’m so glad I’m able to get over art rejections fairly easily.
I think what makes it frustrating is that there is little to no follow up afterwards.
Was my application lacking?
Did my budget seem unrealistic?
Was my proposal not the good kind of weird?
Do my delusions of grandeur outshine my work?
How am I supposed to improve/reevaluate/challenge myself when there isn’t any feedback?

🚫 You are not your failures 🚫
.
Again, for the people in the back, YOU ARE NOT DEFINED BY YOUR FAILURES! 🙅‍♀️
.
This was the first of 22 rejection letters I received during my path to PA school. Some came after interviews, others after being waitlisted, but most were just after sending in my application. They came via email and snail mail. And sometimes they didn't come at all. .
When you are faced with failure or rejection, you can let it bring you down or you can use it to fuel yourself and make you work harder. YOU get to make that choice. YOU choose. 💪🏻
.
I was inspired by @parids and @thedangpa to share the failures that led me to PA school. Did having to apply to PA school 3 times completely suck? Damn straight! But I wouldn't change it for anything because it brought me here. I only wish I had found this incredible community earlier in my journey. 😍
.
What are your experiences with failure? How has it affected your journey?

I'm still waiting back from the main publisher that showed interest in my story. This is from a different publisher. Every time I hear "no" or "pass" I'm truly humbled. I allow myself a moment to feel, however, and then I get back to it.•••••• Every writer takes a different journey. Just because I'm going about this way, may not work for someone else. I started off querying agents. Then I took it into my own hands and have been sending out queries to publishers. I'm determined to get this out there and have no plans on stopping.••••••••
People sugarcoat the writing life way too much. I won't tell you how great it is. The truth is, it's hard work. It's a million rejections. It's self-doubting yourself constantly. It's, what can I do better this time around? Don't assume you're the best, you're not. Every day you're learning something new. You are NOT better than anyone else.
I will tell you about my struggles. I will be real with every post I share. Thank you for following my journey and all your support!❤ #writing #amwriting #amediting #authorlife #writerlife #author #writer #writersociety #writingcommunity #querying #rejectionletter #determination #cantstopwontstop #passionate #inspired

A ”rejection” letter from The New Yorker sent to Sylvia Plath on 7 November 1962.

Even though the poetry editor Howard Moss, didn’t exactly reject Plath’s submission, he recommended she cut the first part of her poem “Amnesiac” and resubmit only the second part under that title.

Eventually, the poem was split in two parts (but not by Plath herself, since she even intended for it to be included as one poem in ‘Ariel’) and the different sections have been published as “Lyonnesse” and as “Amnesiac” separately on different occasions.
You can find both parts of the split version in ‘The Collected Poems’ published in 1981.

I did it! I recieved my very first rejection letter! I'm so excited! Now I know you're probably wondering, 'why the hell is she so excited about a rejection letter?' Allow me to explain... .
.
1. A rejection letter means that I finished my book, worked hard at it and managed to get it in tip top shape and ready to be sent off to a publisher. This alone is a cause for celebration for me. I did it. I completed my story. Something i worked so hard on and gave my all. I did that and bloody hell it feels good to say it.
2. A rejection letter means I am a part of the writing world. Every author has at least one under their belt and I want one too. If Stephen King got one, if Rowling, Nabokov, Kipling, Golding and even Dr. Seuss got rejected, then I want one too!
3. A rejection letter makes me want to reject the letter. I want to smile at it, I want to print it and file it away and then I want to challenge it to a duel. Because it has done me the favour of wanting to challenge it, wanting to prove it wrong and, most of all, to say, 'IN YOUR FACE!' So, folks, do not be disheartened. Do not question yourself or your writing, do not put that pen down and most of all do NOT give up. Instead arm yourself, pick up that pen and use it as your sword!

A couple of days ago Alejandro Cesarco posted on Instagram a nice rejection letter he received from Michael Asher--and it reminded me of a similar letter I received from the composer Ned Rorem over a decade ago, after I asked Rorem if he'd collaborate with me on a music piece I wanted to create with him. Rorem replied saying no, but not without also saying it with such sincerity and care that it made me smile. How many times have you gotten a rejection that made you smile? •

The thing is, rejection is part of the process of being an artist: we both reject and are rejected, though not always with the poise Asher and Rorem exhibited. Their letters look at you in the eye. That isn't an easy thing to do. •

Thank you, Ned. •
