Today I take the first step, I have not posted in some time, and I will not be posting in the near future because today I am checking into a mental health facility. I am taking back control of my mental health and my life. Shining a light on yourself in recovery means you’ll also shine a light on your relationships. People don’t often realize that having an eating disorder means your relationships ALSO have an eating disorder. Shifting into wellness, therefore, means that your relationships will also shift - if you change, they will too. This may result in relationships no longer feeling matched - often the connection between people unravels when one person is on a journey of change. Other times, relationships may soar - people tap into their real selves and their connections become deeper and more full of trust, full of love. It’s important to remember that when you decide to live without harm, you’re signing up your WHOLE life to do the same.

After yesterday’s crappy mood, I’m feeling much better! Oh i cant even count how many times this has been true. I often beat myself down according to how I feel others act toward me or I will let their judgments of me be my true self-worth. This can be great on days or times when its positive and down right life destroying when it isn’t. So I try to remember what others think of me is none of my business and that helps me especially when I know my true intentions.

In speaking about interpersonal boundaries, we often keep the conversation in the realm of real-life contact. Despite the fact that most of us spend hours per day engaging with social media, we rarely speak about cultivating healthy, boundaried lives online! ✨

Limiting contact with toxic people from one’s past, former romantic partners that may bring up traumatic memories of heartbreak, and other “unknown" people that impose unhealthy body or lifestyle standards can be a healthy way of maintaining boundaries online. ✨

I recently learned the term “hate-follow”, which means to follow an account for the sole purpose of making fun of a user’s content, maintaining surveillance on a person, or using the account as a standard to compare oneself to. By hate-following someone, you are subjecting yourself to the potential for negative feelings every time you check your feed! ✨

You wouldn’t repeatedly contact someone you disliked offline, so why do it online? ✨

Hit “ Unfollow” when you feel yourself: 📱Comparing your lifestyle or body to images posted 📱Feeling repeatedly angry, sad, or hurt by someone’s content choices ⌚️Checking accounts obsessively or feeling preoccupied with someone’s social media presence ✨

No guilt! You don’t have to follow social media accounts that you don’t want to. I’m an a Addict. Those reading this may or may not be. Like a diabetic whose chronic illness causes them not to process and breakdown foods in a healthy way, the mind of an addict operates in such a way that we don’t breakdown or relate to reality in a healthy way either. ⠀
⠀
Addiction is fundamentally the polar opposite of love. Confused addiction mind actually resists it. It’s like mentally being at war with life, without ever getting a day off, where it’s goal is to have absolute control and authority over everything to try and manufacture a perfect world, despite never having met a happy perfectionist; particularly our self. ⠀
⠀
We’re in our life, something comes up that our mind doesn’t like and poses a threat... messaging drops in - related to some physical, mental, emotional or spiritual insecurity ‘This isn’t fair...’ ‘I’m alone...’ ‘I’m different, no one can relate to me...’ ‘This isn’t think right or feel okay’ or there’s some conscious or unconscious remembrance of negative experiences and the natural response for us as addicts is rebellion. ⠀
⠀
That said, We have something called a sponsor. In my personal experience the role of my sponsor is that they’re a kind of meditation guide in how to live and apply with consistency, depth and sincerity a living meditation practice known as the Twelve Steps, that are Twelve specific meditation practices that help addicts meet reality in a way that’s healthier, more open-hearted, generous, friendly and kind... rooted in ‘Good-will’ and the ‘Creative action’ of Love. It’s a lot like having a navigator on a cross country trip. Their experience and presence are invaluable. Without them, the journey to feel, deal, integrate and heal our experience can be super difficult. We can waste unnecessary time, or  get on a path that misleads us away from healing.

If you’re STUCK in a cycle of restricting what you eat, followed by ‘falling off the wagon‘, eating ALL the FOODS you intended NOT to 🍩🍫🍕and feeling terribly guilty...⁣ ⁣ .
The solution partly lies in removing the restriction💡. BUT this can feel FREAKING SCAAARY! 😐 I know. .
In the cycle shown, rules and restriction provide a (false) sense of control around food▶️until you inevitably fall off the wagon again! 🤦🏻‍♀️⁣ ⁣

However, you then think if you were to remove your food rules, how could you possibly trust yourself not to eat pizza 🍕 and chocolate 🍫 all day, every day?!
. 
While this can happen temporarily (residual backlash from restriction), WHEN COMBINED with increased insight into hunger and fullness cues, greater awareness of reasons for eating, mindfulness and positive nutrition principles, most of the time we gravitate towards food that make us feel good physically, with a smaller splattering of “fun foods” thrown in the mix. 🥳. Which, at the same time, allows us to enjoy the foods to their fullest, minus the guilt or anxiety!

⁣This intuitive approach to eating provides a peaceful, long-term sense of CONTROL around food. NOT just temporary bursts💥. .
So if you’re sick of cycling between restriction and ‘falling off the wagon’, perhaps it’s time to try something new? ⭐️💚

It results in what can be excruciating pain that transverses the areas outlined in red on the second photo.

Always make a comeback bigger than your setback!💪 Fucked  up anorexia big time with today’s lunch!👊😏 I had a full oven baked baguette 🥖 buttered, with melted cheese 🧀🔥filled with onions, olives, 2 quorn sausages topped with bbq sauce,  some cucumber 🥒 and some pea snack crisps! Dessert was a huge fear again!! A very chunky  pound bakery choc muffin which I filled with choc hazelnut spread and topped with sweet freedom caramel choc shot, honeycomb pieces, and choc covered raisins😋👌 the muffin was a little dry but because I added the choc spread inside, it made it taste much moister😉👍 I also had a chocolate muffin flavoured yoghurt which already had mini pieces of chocolate muffin  bits in it and I mixed in some choc shot,+ I also had a apple 🍎  This is a big 🖕 you lunch Ana for everything you’ve taken from me but Watch out, because I’m about to take it all back from you and more!!👏😌 I’m going to skin you to the bone b*tch!!! A few years ago, I stopped eating in public. I couldn't eat in front of my family and friends. I didn't feel comfortable talking about food. It had always been hard for me in the past to have a good relationship with food, because of people at school calling me fat. Since then, I stopped eating at the cafeteria and talking about what I wanted to eat, food I found delicious, and recipes I wanted to make. At one point, there was this rumor going around school that I never ate. Sometimes my friends would tell me, "I've never seen you eat. I would pay you to eat in front of me." One of the things I never expected to accomplish in recovery, but did is being able to talk about food and not feel ashamed about it. Before, I couldn't eat at restaurants or pick a snack I wanted at the store. Today, I'd offer to bake your favorite cookies and suggest to try a new restaurant with you. Everyone eats. Being ashamed to enjoy food is like being ashamed to breathe. A basic human need isn't something to feel uncomfortable about.  Anyone who says mean things about you are only defining themselves. Whether something bad happened involving food in your past, you need to give yourself a chance to have a better relationship with food. You'll have a better time out with friends, not worried about your stomach hurting and be able to learn to make new dishes instead of only eating what your family cooks. Eating in public and having a healthy relationship with food may seem scary at first, but what's more scary is letting that fear inside you grow stronger.

A gentle reminder + some tips of self care habits !! i see self care being perceived online as buying expensive face masks, taking a lush bath in rose water, getting manicures. “treating yourself” oftentimes with an undertone of “with expensive products”. self care doesn’t have to be expensive. self care shouldn’t be so much about consumerism, about splurging. sure, if manicures is your thing, and you value that as a part of your routine, it’s okay. you do you, no shame in that. but self care is so much more !! it’s about nurturing the mind, soul, body, and the world around you. it’s about positive, mindful, kind habits and actions. self care can be cleaning your carpet. it can be a bicycle ride, it can be volunteering or therapy, it can be doing your hobby. it doesn’t have to cost you a cent. 💓 •

Childhood abuse can feel like death by a thousand wounds. This attachment trauma often leads individuals to ritualistically and compulsively self sooth through numbing out behaviors. Ask the addict you know what it is that they are trying not to feel? You may not take their pain away but you can take the walk with them on their journey of self discovery and healing.

This makes never fails to make me HAPPY! Boosting my serotonin the natural way 🌞🌈🌱

So are there ways to increase serotonin in your brain without medication? I was curious about this today so decided to check the research.

A study in 2007 induced different moods in a group of healthy participants, then measured serotonin synthesis in their brains. They found happiness positive correlated to more serotonin production and that thoughts can alter brain metabolism. Changing an individual’s thoughts doesn’t have to be an invasive science experiment though, because this is basically the concept of psychotherapy. Practises such as mindfulness and meditation are also recommended to change outward perspective 🧘🏻‍♀️

Something else really interesting is that apparently bright light can increase serotonin. A study in 2002 showed a link between serotonin synthesis and hours of sunlight exposure independent of season. Meaning that simply getting outside can help boost mood ☀️

And of course, exercise. A comprehensive study in 2001 showed an antidepressant effect of exercising, which was beneficial to those who didn’t experience clinical depression. Exercise seems to also enhance serotonin function in the brain, with the suggestion that fatigue during exercise is associated with elevated brain serotonin synthesis 🤸🏻‍♂️

A cool link that both these display is that there’s been a large shift in the light exposure and physical activity of humans since hunter gather times, which likely attributes to the rising levels of depression in today’s society.

Surprisingly the thing I went look for, diet, didn’t have much evidence. Tryptophan, which increase serotonin in humans, has shown to be an effective antidepressant, but foods that contain it or serotonin don’t directly increase brain serotonin levels since they cannot cross the blood-brain barrier. But bare in mind this is all in relation to directly increasing serotonin levels, where other foods and nutrients might indirectly support serotonin production! More research needs to be done on this though.

Today's porridge😍 I think I forgot how delicious chocolate porridge actually is?! So rich in the taste🤩 And with chocolate topping it's just heavenly😅 I don't really have any plans for today, but I think I am going to go for a walk later Maybe?
