Loose leash walking, for reactive dogs, is an essential skill. I invested heavily in training proximity and calmness on our walks, so that Yoshi stays close and under threshold. Nobody wants to get pulled down the the street, and it makes for such a more pleasurable experience for you AND your dog. In addition, though- reactive dogs already are quite stressed and often have elevated cortisol levels. For these dogs, walks are not very fun. By keeping walks calm, short, and full of lots of sniffing and slow exploring, reactive dogs can work on disengagement and self regulation. I love Yoshi's relaxed body language here, her auto check ins, and the fact that she feels safe enough to sniff and take her time. We achieved this without ever using pain, fear, or force.

#Summerdog turned 9 years old while I was working in the woods for two weeks. So we spent the day running errands and then swimming and #dockdiving at #sellwoodriverfrontpark. I am unabashedly in love with this creature. He is my heart dog, my adventure buddy, my mountain climber, my luckdragon, my inspiration, my unconditional positive regard, my sunny day. He is #thegoodestboy. 💚🐾💚 Shout out to @quincyquietfoot for taking exemplary care of my furry, feathered, and scaly family while I was gone, and for taking Summer and Yoshi on appropriate and lovely adventures. .

Sometimes I look at Louie and think, how did you change so fast darling. Is this not too fast for you ? We walked through a field full or running kiddos, 10 different dogs running around and joggers. He was faffing around and catching the disk (he’s so good I must video it!) I’m so proud of him and just always say to him we can slow down. I still don’t walk straight up a dog or a person, always give him a chance to back out. But anyhow - it’s amazing ❤️

Human here: Been meaning to post about this for a while... Aisha loves food, really loves her food! And she gets excited at meals times and that excitement is fulfilled... personally I can't think of many better feelings than excitement that is fulfilled, so to me meals times are an opportunity for positive emotions for Aisha and there are many things that she worries about so I take these opportunities where I can, happy and safe is how I want my dog, she knows 'wait' for crossing roads, turning corners and other time she needs to wait and many other safety/management cues... but with her there are not safety issues with being excited and being able to express that excitement at meal times and I pretty sure it makes her happy or if you like adds positive emotions bank account... this may not be every one and thier dog but this is how we do meal times round her (btw I will try to catch the chew time dance too!!)

Happy 1 year #adoptiversary #gotchaday, Phoebe!! 🎉. Ok, we officially got her July 7 2018, so I’m 3 days late.
-
What a year it has been! For those new to Ps story, she came to us from rural TN, where my friend found her roaming the streets scared, emaciated, diseased. She had (has) isolation anxiety and fear reactivity to strangers. Two behavioral challenges that do not mix well together - can’t be alone, scared to be with anyone but us.
-
Phoebe is an incredibly loving, resilient, and brilliant dog. She learns new things in ~3 min and all she wants is to be happy, make us happy, trust and love us, and run free with ALL the dogs and toys. She has brought so much happiness to our life despite the extreme challenges she brings. We have come so far with her this past year that it’s hard to remember what she was like at the beginning, or Pre-P life for that matter. Though Pre-P life involved less stress and much more of a social life as I can recall😬.
-
We are so grateful for the unconditional support and understanding from our many veterinarian experts, the R+ force-free dog training community, and this Instagram community. We have learned SO much this year about dog (and human) behavior, patience, commitment, sacrifice, management, and R+ fear-free training that over time leads to an incredibly powerful level of trust and reliability. And the more I learn the more I want to share with others to help point them to the scientifically supported, reputable resources that have guided us.
-
We still have a long road ahead of us but we are so proud of P’s progress and our progress as double-dog owner couple for getting through this year without giving up, and becoming stronger along the way. #PantsandP

In case you missed it over the holiday weekend @reactivedogsotw featured my story! 😁 Check them out to learn about properly interacting with and training dogs especially reactive ones like me 😉
Posted @withrepost • @reactivedogsotw Bensalem, PA, USA 🇺🇸; @allaboutklaus’s story: Klaus is my first dog. I adopted him when he was 8 weeks old. He was a fearful and anxious puppy. On a walk if he saw another dog, he would try to run away and/or pee himself. Around 2 years old, his fear turned into aggression.
Over the next 5 years we went to multiple trainers who used prong collars, e-collars, and punishment based training. At the time I didn’t know any better. The trainers were recommended by my vet and I assumed they knew what was best for Klaus.

Klaus continued to become more aggressive biting multiple dogs and people. It was hard to constantly be told that I had a dangerous, bad dog and should put him down. After his most recent biting incident even the vet said to consider euthanizing him. Thankfully the vet also recommended a behavior clinic.
The behavior clinic was amazing! They explained the psychology behind Klaus and his issues. They introduced me to counter conditioning and desensitization. Klaus has progressed so much in the last 6 months with the combination of the new training and an anti-anxiety medicine.

I’ll always feel bad for what I put Klaus through with the other trainers but I am glad I never gave up on him even when everyone else did. We are finally on the right path and seeing positive results. I’m excited for everyone else to be able to see the GOOD dog I know Klaus has always been!

This happy boy has been enjoying our stress free and light days. I'm always happy both if my dogs have "off switches." Do your dogs have off switches? If not, what do you do to keep them busy?

Long lining it on the common.. and generally being a bit short for the tall grass 😂
.
.
Had a lovely time on the common... a popular dog walking space, I layed around in the shade, played with my squeaky ball, sniffed a lot, rolled in dead fish scales and watched many dogs from a comfortable distance, me and human kept to ourselves and didn't bother anyone... only at the end someone wanted to bother us, both the human and the dog so human asked if they could call their dog away... apparently I shouldn't be in the park if I'm not good with other dogs... but I left with human calmly on a loose lead without saying a word (can't say the same for my human, that's a work in progress 😉)

We’re trying to keep our days chill and boring. We go outside/on walks/ for 10-20 minutes only so mica doesn’t get overwhelmed. We do this a few times a day. OR we drive to the fenced in basketball court and play frisbee / fetch. We’ll post a training vid. later this week to make up for all theboring pix lately. It’s good to take breaks and just focus on enjoying each other/ trying to make every experience together fun for a few days without expectations of training :) #relationshippower #forcefree #reactivedogsotw #heelerx

We had a beautiful hike at Hocking Hills this week. ☀️🌲🐾🐾 We go there every summer to escape the 🎆. I had a fantastic time climbing 🏞 and splashing 💦and smelling. I didn’t bark at a single dog and there were lots there. The dogtor said even though Pawley’s stitches are out he still has to be careful. He got lots of attention in his shirt. 👕He’s a #babemagnet no matter what he wears. 😏#whyisthatdogwearingashirt #sharpdressedman

London, UK 🇬🇧; @introverted_collie Louie’s story: Louie’s journey with me started when he was 3 months old. I picked him up from a breeder far in the farmlands. Didn’t ask to see the mum, didn’t wonder why was he the only one that strayed away from us. He just looked like he needs the extra love so I picked him. It was clear from day 1 that he was reactive. He was only 3 months and would not anyone or anything but me and my mum to come any close to him. I researched reactivity and found an amazing support group for the whole of UK. We started the trainers, we had all sorts. Good ones, no effect ones and horrible ones. He did not change at all until he passed 12 months mark. We implemented CARE with a recommended working breed behaviourist and that’s when the real change started. It’s not been 6 months of positive only training with only 1 person and at times the stooge dogs. From 100 meter distance we got to passing dogs 1 meter away and greeting well behaved dogs. He ignores runners and cyclists and has near zero sound reactivity.

We still have a tonne of work to work on disengaging with people, he doesn’t take rude people trying to pet him despite clear signs not too easily. Positive training, CARE, BAT and strong engagement training with agility have changed our lives already. I know it can only get better but I accept him now for who he really is. Fingers crossed for us! Nowadays I enjoy offlead walks with my mum every day. I’ve learned to run back to her if someone is bothering me. I’m an introvert and simply don’t always want to be friends with everyone. I’m happy the way it is and I’m glad to have learned to let triggers know I need space and to trust my mum she’ll always have my back ❤️

We survived July Fourth!! 🇺🇸🎉🎇🎆. Now to deal with July 5,6,7...😑.
-
I am not “above” using medication that is helpful for these types of events. Pants and P both got trazodone yesterday eve in anticipation of the large fireworks display down the street and also for the random neighborhood fireworks that inevitably go off throughout the night. Neither of these dogs are the cowering, closet-hiding type. They are the barking-frenzy type, which would have been stressful and incessant last night. Cortisol levels can remain elevated in dogs for days after a stressful event and I was trying to avoid this especially with P because it is hard enough for her to function out in the world on “normal” day. (And it’s harder to complete our departure training protocol 5x per week). So I gave them both traz, I turned on the white noise machine up to full strength, and turned up the TV volume to one notch below unbearable and...success! They did not hear ONE firework and slept like [drugged] babies. Now tonight might be a different story...🤞🌧 #sorrynotsorry #PantsandP #reactivedogsotw

I did a thing today... I met cousin Coco! She is a year younger than me, quite a bit smaller than me and not particularly interested in other dogs... but like me she is interested in the humans snacks! We met in a park with Coco on lead sitting down with human's mummy I was on lead too eating snacks and slowly getting nearer but the way I was acting human was not sure I had even seen her! Then we had a little sniff and human let me off lead and then we took turns in having snacks (it was a good day I got many snacks!)... we walked together got some off lead time together we spend 3 hours together I never once told Coco off... she behaved impeccably 😉

Bensalem, PA, USA 🇺🇸; @allaboutklaus’s story: Klaus is my first dog.

This pint size oasis is not far from my home, maybe 15 minutes walks but yesterday was the first time I got to go there... when human first found out about it there was no way I could walk that far and keep my cool..then human forgot until yesterday when we're wondering as we do... I was the only dog and only a few people quietly sitting on benches... so I got all the sniffs to myself!

Oh my goodness! Who could have imagined that my loopy little pal could handle a whole day at a Gun Dog Games workshop with 10 other dogs?! Yes, 10!! We worked in a quiet corner but Max could see and hear the other dogs and didn’t react even a little bit. Not even once! Thank you soooo much @rosie_bescoby for today and everything that has led us here. >>> scroll to see Max learning the makings of a ‘retrieve’ >>>>>

Took Grady camping for the first time this weekend. We learned lots for next time and while he did struggle, he did better than I thought he would and I'm so proud of him. Thanks @four_wet_noses for letting us tag along and here's to more camping adventures in the future

We haven’t had a day w/o a little lunge or bark for a bit. I’m trying my best to keep him away from triggers, very short outings or outings to this place. The good thing is, he recovers quickly and triggers stack more slowly. #keepontruckin’ #heelerx #reactivedogsotw #ballislife

Not the best quality video in the world but I had to share it. There is a spaniel Max has never met before right by the person doing the filming. Would you just look at my dog??? No barking, no lunging, no being loopy. He’s able to follow commands, and even wait while I take a few steps away. I could cry with happiness! ——————————————————

R+ nail maintenance training! We’ve been working on nails with Phoebe since April and she has come a long way! Handling paws is something we should’ve started much earlier but better late than never! All info below can be found on the “Nail Maintenance for Dogs” Facebook group - I highly recommend joining! A rundown of each video:
..
#1) The scratch board (wood & sandpaper)! This is the best way to start with dogs that don’t like having their paws handled, but their nails need to be shorter like yesterday. You can tell of these 3 videos which method P prefers😂. She ALWAYS wags her tail when we are using the scratch board because it’s fun for her, as operant training should be. Our next step is to make a ~4in diameter PVC scratch board to make sure P’s outside nails get as much love as her middle nails. Training front & back nails w scratchboard is all on the Fbook page. Oh and I’m treating with the GOOD stuff: bacon, chicken, etc.
..
#2) the nail “dremel”. It’s not technically a dremel and many people in the nail Fbook group say dremels work much better. But as you can see, P is less excited about this one. Though she sometimes gets a tail wag going. The goal with paw/nail touches and using equipment is counterconditioning and desensitization: just bringing the equipment out and letting her see and smell it should be followed by a treat. She is more enthused by the clippers (not shown here) than this electronic nail trimmer. I’m treating with tripe wet dog food in a squeeze tube - it’s easier to constantly feed with these and your hands cleaner!
..
#3) good old fashioned paw touches. She is pretty good with being touched as long as it’s CC level. If I were to just handle them without CCing she would likely pull them away, so that means we are not yet ready to pick up a paw, hold it, clip a nail, and treat after. That comes later. Right now she needs a positive conditioned emotional response (+CER) before that step.
..
Important: I’m not a trainer and I make mistakes. Also, + nail maintenance is a marathon, not a sprint. We benefit from P (likely) never having a bad nail experience, so if possible, starting from 0 experiences is best!

I was getting used to the neighbours in the backyard and mostly ignoring them. Then mom came home today and i got excited and my excitement quickly turned into maniacal barking at the neighbour. Slight regression...but i am making progress, slowly!

We named Phoebe after the Eastern Phoebe, a flycatcher songbird with a large grayish head, black beak, dark eyes, white underside, and a “wagging” tail when perched - the resemblance is uncanny! Eastern Phoebes also have a raspy call (P snores...), eat insects (P LOVES chasing and eating insects), defend territory (😑), and tolerate other species (P gets along with all breeds, save humans). P is incredibly intrigued by birds so it all checks out 😂. The one big difference: Phoebes hang near water sources and P HATES water 😩🤷‍♀️.

Day 2️⃣0️⃣ of the #train20challenge ! And possibly the most important one of all! It isn’t a cute Avon trick video, instead it’s training for the humans! An important part of our reactive dog journey has been knowing that WE are half the battle! Learning to understand our dog and investing in making sure we are familiar and competent in training to help her. That we can reinforce correct behaviours, and know where to go for help when we struggle! We have a great trainer and vet, as well as lots of seminars and trainings in our city!
The secret part of training is that whatever junk you carry with you, you bring to your dog. As a person who struggles with lots of anxiety, training has been integral in my understanding of how to deal with those issues in human world, so that I can help Avon in the dog world. We pair dog training with my self-care, and professional counselling. Honestly I never prioritized my own mental health, until I was forced to be a better human for our girl (it made me a better mom, friend, partner, and employee too)! It was a total wake up call, and the beginning of our crazy family journey! 🐶 #reactivedogsofinstagram #reactivityawareness #reactivedogsotw

#PantsandP

It happened. This morning on my walk I was asked if I was a dog trainer via drive-by. Was it the treat pouch or fanny pack full of PB and cheese squeeze tubes that led her astray? 😂😂 Or perhaps Pants and P’s impressive focus and loose leash skills??🤞#wishfulthinking. I wish I could’ve shared more than yelling: “careforreactivedogs.com” at her but P was starting to react and I had to CC fast. At least the woman got a nice demo 😂🤷‍♀️. #notatrainer #reactivedogsotw #counterconditioning #positivereinforcement

I didn’t bark at a single dog and there were lots there. The dogtor said even though Pawley’s stitches are out he still has to be careful. He got lots of attention in his shirt. 👕He’s a #babemagnet no matter what he wears. 😏 #whyisthatdogwearingashirt #sharpdressedman
