After a few months of silence and some personal & professional flying, we finally opened our first chapter of this year’s travelogue.
#amritsar is visited by one and all and it has been on my travel list since long. I am glad we chose #amritsar as this year’s first destination and visited this part of the country which is not only sacred but has utmost relevance in the Modern Indian history.

In frame: #harmandirsahib and it’s golden reflection on the Amrit Sarovar.
Captured through the arches of #ramgarhiabunga (Minarets behind Harmandir Sahib) which has its own history but sadly, visited & explored by none.

Ramgarhia Bunga (Bunga means "mansion"), is a three-storeyed marvel of Sikh architecture located in the vicinity of Shri Darbar Sahib Amritsar. Ramgarhia bunga, a pre-Ranjit Singh structure was built by Sikh warrior and Ramgarhia misl chief Jassa Singh Ramgarhia in 1755 is the only surviving example of Bunga architecture typology. It was constructed to fortifying the area to protect the holy complex from outside invasion.

you ever have that moment when a sheen of routine is pulled away from your eyes
and all of a sudden the whole world is full of knowledge, legends, conversations, histories, that you never "had time" for.
you become attuned to the stories told by a brick laying abandoned, or an entire Qila in your backyard you never knew existed.
taking mattha at that Gurdwara you visited every weekend becomes much more than shardha or ritual. now you can hear the goonj of the jakarai of the shaheeds that took their last stand at that very spot.
Panjab is home to me.
but this time I actually stood still to listen to the rustles of the leaves in it's garden. felt the walls, the crumbling ones, the abandoned ones, and the ones taken over by not apnai. suffocated like the microbes in the once fertile earth, and like the lungs of the farmers left with no other choice. smelled the love of langar in the air, and the faint rosewater fragrance that tends to cling to the marble covering our history. saw the smiles grow at us standing there in baana and speaking panjabi, bhaaven asi bahron aye aan. and saw the wrinkles grow when we sought answers for the reoccurrences of gulaami.
I might have been born and raised there, but this time, I lived, I loved, I grew up in Panjab. (in a span of 3 weeks, my amazing husband @gian_seeker and I experienced Panjab like I could never have imagined, all thanks to his detailed planning skills. this extended adventure provided boundless motivation, food for thought about Panjab and it's people, and their issues, and helped us grow together. more pics to come!)
TL;DR - this trip was lit.

The word Bunga stands for a place to live. During the Sikh Empire, several Sikh Generals and Royal Families got constructed nearly 99 Bungas in the walled city of Amritsar out of which the one constructed by Ramgarhia Missal (Sect) to provideaccommodation to the Devotees coming to Golden Temple.

There used to be 22 watch towers around the Harmandir Sahib (The Golden Temple) in order to keep a watch on the enemy (invaders). By the time 20 finished and only two towers adjoining Ramgarhia Bunga survived.

During the army invasion on Harmandir Sahib in 1984, these two towers were also badly damaged by canon fires. They were again restored to the original design.

On the ground floor of the Bunga, some rooms with balcony and a open space is there. The whole building depicts the rare work of Sikh Architecture. #InstaGurudwaras ❤
