Yavneh, Hamerkaz, Israel

I ran across this quote within the context of suicide prevention, and after yesterday's tragic shooting in nearby Poway - I had to delve deeper. Rabbi Tarfon was a sage who lived in Roman times - serving his people in a time of constant violence and discrimination. Irving Greenberg from Visions & Voices explains Rabbi Tarfon's message best: "the Jewish religion teaches that this world, God’s creation, is intended to be perfect - full of life - especially its highest form, human life—and built to sustain justice, equality and peace. But the present state of the world is so far from perfect. How can we possibly achieve tikkun olam, a repaired world? To get there, we will have to overcome the enemies of life: poverty, hunger, oppression, discrimination, war and sickness. The Jewish answer is covenant, a loving partnership between God and humanity. We commit our lives to improving the world. We will work steadfastly, faithfully, advancing step by step, until we attain a state of total perfection. This incremental approach means that the goal cannot be reached in one generation. Therefore, Judaism requires a partnership between the generations. Each generation will improve the world as far as it can. Then it must educate its children and pass on the mission to the next generation, until the goal is reached.
Rabbi Tarfon teaches: Do not be arrogant; do not think that you alone can finish the job. Trust in your children and generations yet unborn to take up the task. Know that you are part of the living chain of people who have dreamed, worked for a better world and carried on this mission for four thousand years in an unbroken covenant."
Whatever you believe - we all want the same things - justice, equality & PEACE. The answer is to do it together - so get to work...today honor Lori Kaye who lost her life in the Chabad of Poway yesterday during your Peace Pause. 11am PST ~ 2pm EST. .

When I first heard about the shooting at the Chabad shul in California, I was in a Chabad shul in Miami, like many Jews, closing out the Pesach holiday. And I felt emptiness. Not fear, not sadness, not hate. I felt an absence of emotion. I felt blocked.
Today I listened to the rabbi speaking about the shooting, and the fallen hero Lori Kay who took a bullet for him. And I still felt nothing. Just empty.
It wasn’t until I turned off his voice and returned to my chores that I broke down in tears. Not just for Lori. Not just for the rabbi, or his shaken congregation, but for all of us. Us, the Jewish people, and Us, the American people.
And when my son asked me, Mama, why are you crying? I didn’t have the words. “A bad man did a bad thing in a shul.” It placated him, but he knew. He knows. Mama doesn’t cry very often.
I am saddened that this is a conversation I need to have with me son. Again.
I am saddened for the world, that hatred seethes. Again.
I am saddened that I can’t promise this is the last time. Again.
I am saddened for our klal, that attendance at shul has to feel like a safety calculation, especially for those of us whose parents and grandparents came here to be safe.
I am saddened that we are not the only ones, that houses of worship have become open targets in too many cases.
I am saddened that the division we have all been seeing and feeling in this country bubbles to the surface in these atrocious displays.

But I am grateful to live in a country where I believe we do stand to support one another’s rights to practice our faiths freely, even and especially at these times.
I am so very grateful to be a Jew, to carry the yoke that binds me to Torah mitzvot. It’s one I carry with great pride and joy and love. Because ultimately, I believe in the timeless and universal lessons of Torah— those that teach us how and why we should be kind, seek peace, pursue justice, nullify our egos, show love for one another, and serve HaShem in ways big and small. And I believe that now more than ever, we need to connect to that higher consciousness, the one that takes us outside of ourselves and reminds us that we are ALL ONE.

This is Lori Gilbert-Kaye with her daughter Hannah.

Lori was murdered yesterday in her synagogue, Chabad of Poway CA, while trying to protect the rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein, whose fingers were shot off by the gunman who opened fire with an AR 15-style gun.

When her husband (a doctor in the community) arrived on the scene to administer first aid to the victims and saw her, he fainted.

In a Facebook post last year, Lori wrote: “Fearless at 60! As I enter a new decade, I am full of gratitude & thankfulness for the many blessings in my life. As I said on my 40th & 50th birthdays, life is not measured by the breaths we take, but BY the moments that take our breath away." Rest in peace, Hero.

PLEASE READ, FRIENDS: This forested area was devastated in 2012 by Hurricane Sandy, but it is being repaired through human care and nature’s force of life. So too, our society is being damaged by violence and hatred. The pain of the second antisemitic attack on American soil in six months weighs heavily on my heart. And so too does all the hatred or violence against people of color, immigrants, and any group perceived as different. The inaction of leaders to curb weapons of war in our midst leaves me and others with a sense of fear and powerlessness. We have to turn our houses of worship into fortresses rather than open tents. I am asking all of us to be part of the healing of our social ecosystem, by spreading love, kindness, and understanding every day. As Rabbi Goldstein from Poway said in a message to people of all faiths, never give up. Every deed counts. The stakes are high, my friends, but I have faith in us. ~

Please join me in a prayer calling to the Shelter of Light, The Angel of Mercy to comfort the family that lost their mother, Lori Gilbert‑Kaye, bring healing and strength to Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein and the two Israelis. Let your healing prayer be, "the echo with wings resounding" spanning the globe and touching the hearts of all in Sri Lanka, bringing peace, care and compassion. Thank you my brothers and sisters.
Love and light,
