☝🏼You don’t need to lose a bit of weight before you start the gym

I completely understand that it might make you feel a little more comfortable BUT it’s most likely a fitting in and judgement thing.
.
Some (potentially harsh) truth... you’re getting judged in the supermarket just as much as you would in the gym.
.
We judge others. It’s human nature 🤷🏼‍♂️
.
And the old thing of wanting to fit in, you’ll fit in just fine with a good sweat on, a work ethic and a smile... trust me 🙏🏼
.
That’s from someone who also thought they wouldn’t fit in because they were skinny fat and weak as fuck... ME!
.
But by going the gym, I stopped giving a shit what others thought because I’m working on what I want to at a pace I’m comfortable with.
.
You can’t do much more than that.
.
Get in there tomorrow, get a sweat on, show your work ethic, challenge yourself and just enjoy it 👌🏼
.
It’s also worth you knowing, most of the ‘fit’ people in the gym were once in your shoes and are friendly!

✅So stop worrying about progress.

Firstly progress is key. It needs to happen.
.
But so what if you didn’t quite run as far or as long as last time...
Or you didn’t lift quite as heavy...
Or you got a couple less reps...
It won’t make that much of a difference.
.
The fact that you went and done something anyway will make the difference.
.
We are humans.
We have lives.
We have a hundred and one things that impact our training.
.
As long as you’re making progress over time it’s cool. Don’t worry about the day to day things.
.
You don’t have to beat numbers each session. Aim for it sure but don’t worry if you don’t.
.
We all have weak and strong days.
.

Since starting with @chloe_lang_ she has made massive improvements with her nutrition. Making homemade meals daily, swapping snacks to save calories and becoming more aware of when she is full and not just eating for the sake of it, which most of us are guilty of 🙋🏽‍♀️ Learning and understanding the benefits of good nutrition and how it can affect your body and mindset is a massive achievement. But you can’t have a burger every day surely? I agree

And if you drank everyday you’d get called an alcoholic 😆

So what approach should you take?

The one that works best for you!

Here are some real life examples —> mine
.
Chocolate I love to have in large quantities. A normal size bar just doesn’t satisfy me 🤷🏼‍♂️ so rather than have one per day, which is about 250kcal out of my 2,500-3,000 per day, which is nothing, I’d rather have a 100g bar (or 2) on the weekend which is about 550kcal (quick maths —> 250x7=1,750 / 550x2=1,100)
.
I have less (yes it fits my calories).
.
A burger / pizza / Chinese I don’t have weekly because you’re looking at 1,000kcal+ in one go. That’s maybe once per month if not every 6 weeks.
.
Alcohol just isn’t my thing. Everyday when I’m abroad yes. At home, at Christmas, maybe the odd trip to the pub and nights out, I had one last year 🤦🏼‍♂️😆
.
So, the point is, do you. Yes the 80:20 principle makes a lot of sense if you’re the type of person who restricts all week and then binges but if you can control yourself, then perhaps a different approach is ok? Like my chocolate one.
.
There’ll always be someone somewhere that will say something is a bad food relationship but if it works for you then who gives a fuck 🤷🏼‍♂️

I love a good glazed doughnut too 😍🍩

2. It’ll never be perfect

These apply to any walks of life.

When writing, the first draft is always for the bin.

Your first push towards a goal, your first mistake therefore your first lesson.

Lower Back Pain —> ‘Tight’ Hamstrings —> The Cure;
.
MOST people have weak hamstrings because they don’t use them or train them poorly 🤷🏼‍♂️
.
When they do, it’s normally on a leg curl of some sort (seated, lying or standing).
.
It’s likely that you’ve got lower back pain because of the pressure put on your back from tight muscles and not necessary the lower back ☝🏼
.
Glutes (ass) and hips are likely to be tight which can result in lower back pain.
.
Weak hamstrings and in-active glutes too!
.
By in-active I mean they don’t contract too well because of poor pelvic alignment (geeky stuff 🤓). The stomach / core probably isn’t very strong either which may also be contributing to the pain.
.
The cure? Time, good programming and mobility drills.
.
Go to exercises would be something like RDL’s (pictured), hip thrusts, glute bridges, abductor machine and a band around the knees or ankles and doing some jazzy glute shit too.
.
Failing all that, it could be that you have a bad back because your back is bad 🤷🏼‍♂️
.
I normally send people to a sport massage therapist (@rhiankate96) as they can tell me a little more whether it’s tight muscles and poor mobility or something a little more serious.
.
Yet (touch wood) to come across anything more serious than poor mobility, tight hips and glutes and weak / over active hamstrings (by over active I mean compensating for the inactive glutes).
.
So if you have lower back pain, it can probably be sorted, so stop being the big man and getting on with it. No need to. Your training and life can be so much better if it’s sorted.

Glutes (ass) and hips are likely to be tight which can result in lower back pain.

Weak hamstrings and in-active glutes too!

By in-active I mean they don’t contract too well because of poor pelvic alignment (geeky stuff 🤓). The stomach / core probably isn’t very strong either which may also be contributing to the pain.
.
The cure? Time, good programming and mobility drills.
.
Go to exercises would be something like RDL’s (pictured), hip thrusts, glute bridges, abductor machine and a band around the knees or ankles and doing some jazzy glute shit too.
.
Failing all that, it could be that you have a bad back because your back is bad 🤷🏼‍♂️
.
I normally send people to a sport massage therapist (@rhiankate96) as they can tell me a little more whether it’s tight muscles and poor mobility or something a little more serious.
.
Yet (touch wood) to come across anything more serious than poor mobility, tight hips and glutes and weak / over active hamstrings (by over active I mean compensating for the inactive glutes).
.
So if you have lower back pain, it can probably be sorted, so stop being the big man and getting on with it. No need to. Your training and life can be so much better if it’s sorted.

So as I'm sat here finishing off my warm down cardio, I'm looking back on my competitive outings. Now if I'm being honest I am very much dissapointed with the placings I have received but at the end of the day it's all based on the opinions of the judges and what they are looking for on the day. Right now I'm filled with mixed emotions happiness, sadness and frustration. However looking back on how far I've came over the last 4 years or so having ligament reconstruction unable to walk for a year to dropping a massive amount of weight and competing in men's physique to then entering a solid rather excessive off season and entering another 12 months of competition prep with no slip ups no missed sessions no going off plan and to then finally compete in men's open bodybuilding in quite frankly amazing shape. I've got an amazing girlfriend in @harrietk1995 who's put up with it all yes it's difficult for those of us dieting but even more so for the people that get brought along for the ride. I've got a great coach in @bobwaterhouse86 who's been amazing and got me in the best shape and best of all I've got amazing people around me who no matter what have supported me. This will baffle people for a few reasons...
.
Firstly, nope, not just one leg session per week.
.
Secondly, more frequency allows more volume (amount of sets).
.
Thirdly, more frequency allows for a higher intensity (how heavy) per exercise.
.
Fourthly, heavy leg extensions? Yep. For the past god knows how many years I’ve not gone below 10 reps with them and I’m getting sick of doing higher rep extensions. Basically getting bored and I’m slacking.
.
I’m lazy like that, if reps are too high I’ll switch off and just go through the motions, I prefer lower to mid reps, 3-10 range.
.
Fifthly, there are other exercises on these days just not quad based (hamstring, calve, glute and abs).
.
Sixthly, take into account recovery and fatigue. Squats can be very taxing for some people so following that up with a ton of other exercises will most likely cause too much soreness the next day which can result in you moving less or not being able to put as much into the next session. Also be too taxing to put a decent enough effort into the next exercise.

Stretching and mobility work is very important whether you train or not, yet it’s something we often don’t make time for- I’m guilty of this too 🙋🏽‍♀️The benefits range from increased flexibility and range of motion for movements like squats and lunges, reduced muscle soreness (DOMS), better posture, increased blood flow to muscles. I myself for the past 13 weeks have been in a group mentorship programme with the company @activeliferx ACTIVE LIFE “The only company in the world to help people get out of pain without going to the doctor or missing the gym” to increase my knowledge and understanding of things I wasn’t doing to help further educate others ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cost
The price of the course in my eyes was EXTREMELY expensive but when I was guaranteed results if I put in the work that was set even before half way through the course I knew this course was worth the money twice over from the value I was given

Sleep —> The Number 1 Underrated Tool —> FACT ✅

I hate sleep. It’s a fight for me to go. But it’s something I work on. A lot.
.
If I’m tired my training suffers horrendously. So does my mood. Patience. And energy.
.
Thankfully my nutrition or non exercise activity doesn’t.
.
But that’s because of years and years of discipline.
.
If I didn’t have that discipline. I’d suffer in those areas too. Like most people.
.
An easy win for fat loss, changing the way you look and feel, for health, is to get enough sleep so that you’re functioning as well as you can.
.
A lot of the decisions around nutrition and training that you make / don’t make are because of poor or little sleep.
.
Trying to fix the sugar pick me up at 11am is like taking a pill for a pain you have in your arm to mask the fact it’s broken.
.
Treat the cause NOT the symptom.

A Years Progress...
Yes, you have to look very carefully to see what progress I’ve made 😆
.
That’s just how it is. Muscle gain doesn’t happen fast.
.
The changes:
- similar leanness but I’m half a stone heavier on the right, I haven’t gained 7lbs of muscle I’m not quite as lean as the left picture
- arms have grown (big priority - still are)
- shoulders have grown
- chest has grown
- abs look better (had been training them for 4/5 weeks)
- legs have grown too but they’re hidden 🤷🏼‍♂️
.
I’m also pretty sure I took the left photo right after an upper body session meaning I had a pump!
.
Right picture I trained upper 4 hours earlier so again I see this as a win 🙌🏼
.
All areas I focused on have improved because I prioritised them and stayed consistent.
.
Compare my progress to someone in their early 20’s with no kids and it’s god damn awful 😆
.
BUT the golden rule is, make being progressive a habit. Doesn’t matter how fast or slow but be Progressive in every area ✅
.
Better yourself and don’t compare yourself to others.
.

If you love to train a specific muscle (like chest)… why are you only doing it once per week?
.
The days of international chest day (Monday) are dying out.
.
Instead of cramming all your chest exercises into one session and being really motivated and loving that day then not being as motivated on the others, why not split it up so that you do a little of what you love each session or in more sessions than not.
.
There are other benefits to this too, I’ll explain in another post though.

Why September IS the perfect time to get in shape...!!

Pro’s & Cons of Training in September
.
Cons:
❌ How you looked and felt in your swimwear is fresh on your mind
❌ You feel self conscious because of the relaxed summer you had
❌ You’re lethargic
❌ You’re unfit
❌ Clothes are tighter
.
Pros:
✅ Super motivated because the feeling of how fat and uncomfortable you felt in your swimwear is fresh in your mind
✅ Because of how self conscious you feel you’re super eager to change the way you look
✅ You hate not having any energy to walk up the stairs
✅ You hate how unfit you are so don’t mind doing a bit of exercise to improve your fitness
✅ You don’t want your clothes to be too tight
.
Use that uncomfortable feeling from when you were on the beach as your drive and determination to give yourself a kick up the ass ready for the C word 🎅🏼
.
If you think about it... you’ll probably give getting in shape now a better go rather than January because those feelings would be forgotten by then!
.

Ever been out, ordered food and then panicked about what someone might think about it??? Or is that just me? I don’t know about you guys, but when I was younger and extremely self conscious, the thought of eating out was heartbreaking.
I was petrified of what people would think because I was classed as overweight 🙄 so the thought of ordering a dessert was anxiety inducing hell.
I asked on my stories earlier for messages to be sent in on what people struggle with, and this was an issue that came up, a lot!
Now I am a little more comfortable with myself, not completely at all because I am indeed human, but better, I give less of a toss, but that shit still gets me every now and again! (Well not in this picture, but occasionally 😂) My point is, if you have the luxury to go out, with friends, family etc, then having whatever a dessert really isn’t that big of a deal! You are not going to ruin anything with one meal, but you can ruin an evening with one shit thought!
So relax and enjoy 😘

A lot of the time we see social media, magazines and television and want the results the people who influence us have.

A few key points to note:

1. Most of them don’t have the ‘results’ (body image wise) day to day 🤯
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. They didn’t get the body you want in a 6 week process or in the last 30 days

Now with that being said that’s not to say you can’t achieve the body you want or deserve. Everyone deserve to be happy and if having that specific body makes you happen then go after it.

I love training BUT there are days, probably 2 or 3 out of the 5 per week I train were it is a massssssive struggle mentally and physically.
.
I cannot be bothered going. There’s a hundred million things I’d rather do instead like watch my lawn grow 😆
.
But I go anyway.
.
I go despite not wanting too.
.
How? Discipline
Why? Health
.
And the reward that you get afterwards. You always feel better after you’ve trained... providing you haven’t broken your leg of course.
.
That high after a session is what you need to remember the next time you can’t be bothered going.
.
Don’t go because you have to.
Go because you can.
.
Because of your health.
Don’t be waiting for the time to be right. Your motivation to be high. It’s never going to stay there.
.
Which is why discipline and self respect matter soooooo much!
.
Be mentally strong enough that you do as you say when things get tough.
.
Have enough self respect that you take care of yourself.
.
I’m human. I can’t be bothered either. But I do it anyway. Discipline. Self respect. They’re the secret.

✅ Some Truth...

I love training BUT there are days, probably 2 or 3 out of the 5 per week I train were it is a massssssive struggle mentally and physically.
.
I cannot be bothered going. There’s a hundred million things I’d rather do instead like watch my lawn grow 😆
.
But I go anyway.
.
I go despite not wanting too.
.
How? Discipline
Why? Health
.
And the reward that you get afterwards. You always feel better after you’ve trained... providing you haven’t broken your leg of course.
.
That high after a session is what you need to remember the next time you can’t be bothered going.
.
Don’t go because you have to.
Go because you can.
.
Because of your health.
Don’t be waiting for the time to be right. Your motivation to be high. It’s never going to stay there.
.
Which is why discipline and self respect matter soooooo much!
.
Be mentally strong enough that you do as you say when things get tough.
.
Have enough self respect that you take care of yourself.
.
I’m human. I can’t be bothered either. But I do it anyway. Discipline. Self respect. They’re the secret.

16 weeks of being consistent!

When you want to get ripped, you’ve got to be patience!

PERIOD!

Toby learnt this week by week! Even with having 3 festival weekends, many family meals, many night out, and a lot of “stresses.” (That’s now decreased due to focusing on himself!)

And yet he still achieves!

As soon as he’s had a “cheat” then he gets back on track the next day, not making excuses because his end goal mattered more, we have miniature goals set in place to allow him to achieve this and that mattered the most to him, as long as he achieved his goal he put his faith in me! ❤️

The key is patience and consistency and trust in the process 100%!
⠀⠀
Toby’s end goal now is to have a good 6-8 months of bulking allowing him to really put some quality size on!
⠀⠀
This is perfect position to start from as we are now at a VERY lean state allowing not much body fat to gain to keep him in condition for as long as possible until the “lean state” fades and then we are adding tissue but allowing to get “fluffy”

I’m exsited to see what @tobybaz can bring in the next couple of days/weeks/months!

Rack pulls are definitely one of my current favourites!
Today we got:
•100kg for 12
•110kg for 10
•120kg for 8
•130kg for 3, failed on the 4th rep but I'll take that😎 (My dad didn't press record for the first rep🙄 but what can you do😂)

Big steps moving forwards, NO steps back🤜

Off to train legs and make use of the 20 chicken nuggets I had last night😂🤦‍♀️

A cheat every now and then is not bad for you, in fact it's needed sometimes! A cheat meal every now and then is a great way to prevent you binge eating👌 I've been on track now for a good few weeks and feel great! Last night I just craved some nuggets and that was that😂

So I've decided to take on @strivewithscott 6 week shred!! And I am excited to say the least💪💪 •
COACHES NEED COACHES- now not everyone may agree with this but I definitely do! We are all capable of keeping ourselves healthy but there's nothing like having someone else keeping you motivated and pushing you to your limits! •
I am so excited to see what i can achieve in 6 weeks time, I am determined to smash it and get into my best shape yet👌There will be a before and after photo👍 #STRIVE2SHRED

Most common thing I hear; 'I'm too scared to use the weights in the gym' or 'what if I do it wrong, people are watching me'🙎‍♀️ •
We have all been there, it can be very daunting, whether that's starting in a new gym or you've just never tried weight training before! Here's a few tips to get you started! - 💛Find out when the quiet times are in the gym while you're starting off, this way you wont feel as intimidated with loads of people around you!
- 💛Familarise yourself with the equipment in your gym, take a friend with you to try them out!
- 💛Educate yourself on what it is you want to do!
- 💛Ask for help! A member of staff in the gym are always there to help so use it to your advantage. -
💛Honestly, nobody is watching you. This is just the nerves making you think that! Everyone is doing their own thing, concentrating on their own training! -

It can be scary but it doesn't take long before you feel like you'll be owning the gym! You've just got to go for it❤ -
