Finished History of Photography tonight, and as we walked out of class our instructor, @lizziechen, gave us photography books based on our interest! 🥰 It was so thoughtful!! This class has been awesome! Lizzie is kind and inspirational. We had a ton of guest speakers including a photo editor from NPR and a Magnum photographer @elireedmagnum. Thank you Lizzie!!! Everyone should sign up for her class! #photographystudent #photojournalismphotography #the.dpp

I met this beautiful and happy girl in a tiny village on my trek to Inle Lake. She couldn't speak any English, but insisted on showing me how to blow bubbles using the stem of a plant!

Day 2 of the takeover!
I thought I'd post a hair picture just so that I wasn't jumping around between too many projects, but for those that have already seen it, don't worry tomorrow see's more changes! Anywho; I blooming love this project and it continues to remain very much alive with more pictures scurried away on hard-drives ready to edit and share with you all.
For the moment though, here is another image from the series and from the wonderful people that are sharing themselves with me. Both physically and mentally.
The same narrative stands; that of hair, of assumption, of stereotype, of gender, of femininity or masculinity. Of the recording of that.
Enjoy hair lovers!

No. 131 - Karl Schmieder - on turning weaknesses into strengths - Issue No. 7 - Autumn 2019. (@karl.schmieder) (@whatsyourbiostrategy). Portrait and photography by Emily Fishman (@emilycfishman).
.
Over the summer I talked with Karl Schmieder at his place in Park Slope. His short story, "Fifteen Minute Confession," appears within Issue No. 7 - Autumn 2019.  Schmieder founded the first iteration of MessagingLab over twenty years ago, and spoke about the company's journey from its earliest stages to its present work in helping entrepreneurs and brands in the life sciences industry connect with their audiences and tell their stories more effectively. An excerpt from the interview, below.
.
Interviewers: How did you decide to move to New York?
.
Karl: I was a punk rock kid, and I loved seeing bands live. I went to a lot of shows all over Southern California. When I was in high school in Ventura, it was novel to drive down to Hollywood or someplace in L.A. to see a band. But for college, I moved to Riverside in the so-called Inland Empire, about an hour directly east of L.A.
.
So to go see a show, I’d find myself in a car with a friend and we’d be driving an hour, hour-and-a-half to see the show. But an hour there, and an hour back gets old fast. Eventually, I realized I couldn't handle that kind of driving and I was going to move to New York.
.
Interviewers: What do you think it was, or is about punk rock, that does it for you?
.
Karl: For sure, there’s an energy there but for me growing up it was two things: One, it’s about turning your weaknesses into strengths. Two, it’s about asking questions and challenging the status quo. I’ve started to think that punk paved the way for a lot of creative endeavors. During the dot com boom, people would get together and start companies. I see a lot of that.
.
And I think that being on the wavelength of asking questions, challenging the status quo, and understanding weakness as strength, has helped me realize if I want to create whether it’s through writing or in business, then I can. And so can you.

War is Misery, this is another from the Venezuelan protest on 2-23. However, for this one I chose b&w and composed the shot to make it more art than editorial and hopefully better convey my interpretation of his message. He stood apart from the rest of the demonstrators, be they for or against, he stood stoically in that one spot, solely to remind us, that regardless of which side of this or any political issue you feel passionately enough to come out for, remember one thing above all else, War is Misery.⁣

Exercise Hamel is a major @australianarmy exercise that is designed to evaluate the war fighting skills of a Brigade; in 2018, the Brisbane-based 7th Brigade is the focus this year.

The exercise takes place in the larger training areas of Shoalwater Bay in Central Queensland with other training areas providing locations for associated components of the exercises such as Cultana in South Australia and airspace and maritime zones adjacent such that all elements of the Australian Defence Force can conduct their training. @royalaustraliannavy ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
