Triggers.

15 years after my rape and they are still there.

They show up when I least expect them, and they wreak havoc in the moment and then for hours afterwards. Even though I have been starting to work on them, they still are firmly rooted in my brain.

Tonite my husband and I were in the kitchen, and he pulled a knife from the knife block behind me to chop the vegetables.

I felt extreme terror.

I dropped the dish I was holding and it smashed into a gazillion shards.

The vomit was immediately burning my throat.

The hairs on the back of my neck stood up.

My heart started pounding in my ears.

Sweat came from nowhere and started dripping down my back.

I almost pee’d my pants.

My brain is spinning on warp speed now.

The images are vivid, as are the smells as are the body memories.

The tears haven’t stopped.

I am trying not to hate this moment.

I am struggling to calm myself down and to breathe and to remind myself that it was just a sound and not HIM.

I am safe.

Right?

Los Angeles-based social worker Brooke Butler Thomas, LCSW taught us, “You can actually create a physiological response in your body when you focus on healing breath work, for example meditation, yoga, or simple ‘box breathing’ which can reduce blood flow and slow your heart rate. To use box breathing, breathe in for four counts, hold for four counts, breath out for four counts, hold for four counts, and repeat as many times as needed.” Does box breathing help you? What other practices help you regulate anxiety when you’re starting to feel overwhelmed?

Grey gloss tiles for ensuite, and potentially the light shimmer style one for downstairs loo although we'd have to pay quite a lot extra to tile that so might just paint it instead.. Undecided!! Y’all, Imma be real with you. I had some tough moments this week. There were times when I just wanted to curl up in a ball and cry. Others when I wanted to punch something. Others I wanted to scream. I don’t often have these moments but the pressure and anxiety of deadlines and lack of sleep combined to form a perfect storm inside me. Thankfully, I have the awareness to know what is happening, and the training and tools to manage myself in these situations. So here’s a few things I did to help me shift into a better mindset:
.
1 - Acknowledged the state I was in. I didn’t dismiss it. I welcomed it. We’re human. We just sweep our emotions under the rug and pretend they don’t exist.
.
2 - Took a few deep breaths. Seriously. Taking a moment to pause and just breathe is SO POWERFUL.
.
3 - Wrote down all the things on my mind. I call this a “brain dump.” It forces you to slow down and stop the hamster wheel.
.
4 - When I could, MOVE. Literally change my physical state. Ideally, going to the gym or going on a run. If not, at least get up and walk a little, even if it’s a bathroom break. As Tony Robbins says, “change your state, change your mind.”
.
5 - Wrote a list of all the things I was grateful for. I set my goal at 10. But the funny thing was, once I started, I just kept going. This exercise specifically helped me relax and remember that everything is temporary.
.

5 - Wrote a list of all the things I was grateful for. I set my goal at 10. But the funny thing was, once I started, I just kept going. This exercise specifically helped me relax and remember that everything is temporary.

Bristol 1/2 marathon in 26°c heat ... Yea completed it mate 🎉🏃‍♀️ I do have to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me including my parents, brother and fellow runner @camillaaliciabates for coming with me today & helping me get through it. 🙌

That was the hardest & most emotional thing I have ever done. It is also BY FAR my PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT to date ! 💪

What I kept quiet from everybody is that I have had a flare up this week, which should have put me off as it made today near on impossible, but it didn't. It made me more determined to kick Lupus in the butt & to prove to everyone not only that I can do it & I'm in control but to inspire others to change their mindset to a positive one, to kick whatever problems they have in the bum and smash life 💪💕🔥 So today I achieved what I thought was impossible WITHOUT STOPPING ONCE !!!! (Despite the heat & the many many hills 🌡️) & I'm so proud I want to shout it from the rooftops ! I managed to dig deep & even sprint the last 200 meters through severe pain & gritted teeth ( I may also have cried with overwhelming emotion once crossing the finish line 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️) I put myself through all of this to inspire others & raise as much as possible for the incredible @lupus_uk . So PLEASE, if you haven't DONATED yet, please please do ! It is taking an exceptional amount of time to write this caption, because how do you even express gratitude towards your parents? Do you be in awe of all they have sacrificed, the tireless hours they put in for the sake of the children? Or do you just relish the present and enjoy a cup of coffee in the middle of a bustling mall with them . Do you pretend not to notice them sneaking an extra piece of paneer onto your plate, or do you introduce them to a new experiences which they would not have tried ordinarily . How do you just say thank you and make it the most important word in the dictionary?

So many people #emotionallyeat on some level. Or at the very least, eat out of #habit rather than #hunger.⁣

Sure there are some who couldn't care less even forget to eat!

But they are the exception, not the norm.⁣

If this sounds familiar, realize it’s not your fault, but how you were conditioned to think about #food from a young age.

Food is what is used to celebrate and soothe, so it’s no wonder you it’s what you use to numb when feeling #stressed, #anxious, #overwhelmed, #lonely, #bored, #sad, etc.⁣

But that’s where things get tricky.If you’re #eating at times when your #body physically doesn’t need the fuel, chances are you will eat more calories than you need which can lead to #weightgain OR prevent #weightloss.⁣

Emotional eating also makes you #crave foods that are pleasurable, and high in #calories, again making it easier to #overeat. ⁣

I mean let’s be real, have you have every eaten bags of #broccoli after a bad day?

If you know you're eating for reasons other than true hunger, it’s important to get to the root of those emotions, while also developing healthier #copingstrategies.⁣

That sense of relief is only temporary.

It’s a distraction from dealing with what is really going on, and once the food is gone, you’re still left to sit with what's troubling you. ⁣

But it’s not until you can become conscious and aware of your thoughts and feelings that you can start taking action to change the behavior. ⁣

Or have you lost touch with your own hunger and fullness cues Do you always carry #snacks around to prevent any sensation of #hunger. If so, it’s important to start paying attention to what real hunger actually feels like.

Try waiting until you feel that sensation in your stomach.

If we can push through the initial discomfort, often there’s a place of calm and expansiveness on the other side. ✦

It’s easy to spend more time procrastinating and worrying about getting it right than actually working! ✦

I often get stuck in procrastination mode and struggle with the transition of starting a project. To be honest, even little changes from one task to the next can be hard. ✦
.
Once I get started it’s a whole other story! The task I was dreading, I easily get immersed in and can be very productive. ✦
.
Wrapping up the task is just as hard as starting it as I want to make sure it’s perfect! Sometimes this is helpful and sometimes I waste time making unnecessary edits or additions. ✦

Is it hard to ask for what you need or want? 🎨@frizzkidart

For me, it’s taken a long time to get comfortable speaking up and putting my own needs first. ✦
.
This is the downside of being so empathetic and perceptive - constantly worrying about others, anticipating the possible discomfort of conflict and not wanting to risk disappointing or being an inconvenience. ✦
.
The reality is that most of the time our wants and needs are welcome. If not, that’s information that’s better to know sooner than later in a relationship. ✦
.
Being direct helps others understand us and builds more authentic relationships. The alternative is resentment and exhaustion. ✦
.
Start small and practice asking for what you want or need where it feels safe and slowly stretch yourself. It gets easier over time. ✦
