Be on the lookout for the caveman brain, and don’t allow it to control you!

The inner workings of our brain were developed long ago. The mind was first and foremost meant to keep us alive and breathing, which it did very well by keeping us on high alert and always ready for action. Nowadays, that old programming still plays a huge role, because it is our primitive mind that reacts first when we face any situation. 
We no longer have the same threats (sabre tooth tigers and daily dangers aren't so common), but our mind still perceives risk all around us. This leads to chronic stress that can wreak havoc on our lives. 
The first step to overcoming this ancient response is to notice and acknowledge when the caveman mind takes over. Stop, and take a moment to think and breath. This can be improved by working on increasing mindfulness and with meditation practice. 
Second, break down the situation. Identify what is causing the caveman brain to appear and determine the reality of the situation. Why are you feeling anxious or fearful? What is actually causing this? By uncovering the response, you gain greater control over the situation. 
Third, create a positive response by seeing the benefit behind the situation and relating it to a greater goal. Think about how this event is part of a bigger plan, and how you will grow from it. Realize the oppurtunity behind it, and you’ll start to gain comfort with the feelings you have. 
Our primitive response is ever-present in our lives, but with practice we can overcome it and flip it into positive action.

Transformation is scary...I've been told for so many years things will get better. I've yet to experience that better..life gives a small taste then rips the sweetness away. My job is incredibly stressful, I've busted ass for 5 straight weeks..giving up days off and time with my family..to very ran into the ground about not being good enough. At home I live with autism and right now a disrupted life routine. Somedays are utter choas.I'm trying to find a calmer less concerned version of myself. Trying to learn what transformation feels like and know that my life wasnt meant for this...
Change is hard especially since autism has taught me how routine life needs to be to maintain order. Im going to keep striving for the person I once was or a new wiser version of her.

This practice is extremely difficult. It’s something I still struggle with, but with time it really feels better and better.

Our natural impulse is to explain ourselves. We’ve been conditioned to do this. I remember being around 13 years old and my mom helping me brain storm excused to get out of an event or out of sport practice. We’d literally rehearse a script together. My mom had great intentions— she didn’t want me to hurt anyone’s feelings or let anyone down. But, the indirect message I was learning was: you cannot say no without good reason.

The truth is you CAN say no for absolutely no reason at all. We are not required to give any explanation. And, I’ve come to find out when setting boundaries the explanation is what gets the most pushback. That’s why the best thing to do when setting boundaries is to begin with a gracious statement and end with the no. A no cannot be debated.

For example: Let’s say you say “ugh, I wish I could be I’m absolutely exhausted, it’s been a long week.” The response might be: “I know, I’m tired too. It will just be a few hours. It’s not like you’ll able to catch up on sleep at that time anyway.” Let’s say you say: “honestly, I rather not be there because a lot of my ex’s friends will be there and I’m not ready for that” The response might me: “that’s a good thing! You can dress up and look happy and he’ll be jealous”

Let’s say you say: “thanks for the offer but I have the kids that weekend and want to spend some time with them. The response might me: “this is a great way for you to spend time with them at the beach!” If we end with a no statement, the person receiving the boundary has less ability to push back. And, by beginning with a statement of gratitude, it doesn’t feel like rejection. When I use this technique, I still feel the pull to explain. But it’s always received much better than an explanation.
