Queen Conch (Lobatus gigas) (formerly known as Strombus gigas) is along the largest mollusc to inhabit our waters. It's a herbivore, which feed on plant and algal matter from the seagrass beds. A distinguishing feature is the large flared lip, which is also an indication of maturity (sexually reproductive). Please note the closed season for this species!

This is a juvenile Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) finding it's way around a tiny seaweed frond with its foot (the snake looking thing). This thing is tiny... And I mean 3mm tiny!!!

Here’s a thought, pick up your own trash and reduce your use!
.
The average United States resident creates over 4 pounds of trash per day and up to 56 tons of trash per year.
.
Americans make up roughly 5% of the world's population, but generate nearly 40% of the world's total waste.
.
.
If you want to be apart of the solution to our waste problem come join us Saturday August 3rd at Mother’s Beach for a Beach Clean-up, check out our Facebook page for more details!

Grazie. Vi amo❤️

#tbt A few years ago I joined the @sharktagging UM Shark Research & Conservation program and assisted in tagging a caribbean reef shark. I learned so much during this incredible experience! The other data gathered included taking blood to test for pregnancy and sexual maturity, grinding a part of the fin as a toxicology test, taking a biopsy to see what the shark is eating (to establish if it is a top predator), stress test, and measuring. From the method of baiting to piping flowing water through the gills, the researchers minimize stress while collecting data. Studing the migration, mating, and feeding will help the conservation of these amazing creatures.

Happy Birthday to Zoe Neopmuceno! When asked to tell us a little about himself he shared “I love to play video games and I like to play the guitar”. It’s been amazing to see Zoe grow both in the classroom and out in the field, he truly has a natural sense of curiosity! We’re so grateful to have him apart of this summers Marine Island Ecology Course!

Oslob is a contraversial place for many marine enthusiats. And i can totally see why.
For those that don't know Oslob is an area where local fishermen lure whale sharks closer to sure using a kind of plankton food mi. This is done to cash in on the experience of people paying to see and even swim with them.

So right off the bat everything about this seems wrong. It effects their natural behaviour, causes over familirisation with people and the association of boats for food. And ofc there is always some ppl that break the rules and try to grab the animals.
NOW lets look at the bigger picture amd consider what could happen if this was to get banned and become illegal. Firstly the local economy would crash, whilst this may not seem to be any problem concern the shark . . . It is. Whale shark watching was already been done long before the gov steped in to regulate it and was alot more chaotic and invassive towards the sharks. To a tourist with enough money an hungry fisherman will easily take the risk to breaking the law (especially as the gov can longer afford to police it without the money from tourism). The 2nd and far worse outcome come into play when we consider that whale shark fins are considered prestige to some and can fetch up $50k/Kilo. If the shark niw offers no value alive . . . how long would it take for the locals (who have spent their lives learning to fish & find whale sharks) to accept the intrusive and corrupt offers of wealthy "businessmen". So long as we live on this planet there is always going to be an evil, to me this situation is the lesser of 2 evils. Feel free to share you owm thoughts. Here is a good link about it. https://dive-bohol.com/conservation/5-reasons-not-go-oslob/

Any other GOSers have one more semester left?? Meet Maddy Gaumer (@maddy.gaumer). This fall, Maddy will graduate with her bachelor’s degree in marine biology from California State University, Long Beach. She is currently in Clearwater, Florida volunteering with Coastal Marine Education and Research Academy in their efforts to track shark and ray populations in Clearwater. At CMERA Maddy aids in catching, tagging, and releasing sharks and rays. The three years she has attended CMERA have been an invaluable experience and only further ignited her passion for sharks and rays. She hopes that she can spread her love of them to others through education. | Photo by @maddy.gaumer #girlsinoceanscience

25 days of the #100dayproject theme #tropicalwildlife finished! 🌴🐸🐠 Here I am with some of my favs! Which ones did you like the best? Let me know below and also if you have a favourite tropical animal you would like to see from me 🌿 I've learned a lot so far doing this project: I've learned how to find time for art during my busy day while also being a Mama to three awesome kids and working with the limited time I have (usually very late at night or very early in the morning). I've also seen myself grow already with illustrating... during this project one of my main goals is to work on my detailed work. A major challenge I've faced is trying to maintain my personal illustrating style while still growing my skillset.. It's my hope that every illustration you see from me reflects my deep love and respect for the natural world. Movement and the reflection of light is important to me. I always want the illustration to look like its alive and moving in a way that is characteristic and natural for the species. Lastly, I've come to realise that every day is not going to yield a perfect illustration and to be okay with that... That balance in my daily life is just as important as balance in nature and to strive for that. 🌴🌿🐠🌊 Thanks for being here and stay tuned for more tropical art 🌺 Sincerely, Christina Photocredit: my awesome hubby 😉💞 #the100dayproject #illustrator #illustration #art #balance #growth #nature #mystudio #naturalist #ecologist #marinebiology #marineecology #coralreef #dive #seaart #fishart #oceanart #oceanlove #tropicalart #creativelifehappylife

The vast majority of Biscayne National Park is underwater. Since Grandma Joy doesn’t swim, we opted to spend most of our day on a tour of Boca Chita Key. “Each guided tour lasts approximately three hours and includes opportunities to explore and learn about popular and scenic Boca Chita Key and Biscayne Bay. Climb the lighthouse (must be at least 42″ tall), explore the island, and hike the trail (mosquitoes are prevalent on the trails in the summer). Staff engage you with the history of the park and why mangroves, seagrasses, and hardbottom habitats are all vital to the health of the local ecosystems. We want to share all the beauty this area has to offer and show how we can be good stewards of the National Park, preserving its unique habitats for generations to come.” Learn more: https://www.biscaynenationalparkinstitute.org/island-experiences/boca-chita-island-experience/

This giant barrel jellyfish was spotted off the coast of Cornwall. Biologist Lizzie Daly and underwater cinematographer Dan Abbott were diving in Falmouth when they encountered the unusually large 1.5m-long creature. "I've never seen one that big," Daly said, adding that swimming alongside it was "such a serene, grounding experience". Barrel jellyfish often wash up on British beaches in May and June, but little is known about their life cycle at sea.

Even though it's been reported that ~25% of humpback whales around coastal waters in Iceland show signs of entanglement with fishing gear, not all of them are man made😅. A lion's mane jellyfish dared to be in the way of this impressive humpback.

1. Humpback whale surfacing with a lion's mane jellyfish.

2. A lion's mane jellyfish, the biggest jellyfish in the world which fortunately only lives in cold water, can be up to 50 cm diameter and have ~150 tentacles.

3. A northern fulmar taking a ferocious revenge over the jellyfish

A coconut octopus. They are quite small. They bury themselves into the sand. But if they find a coconut, a broken bottle or two nice shells they may use them for protection and come out. If you throw a pair of shells next to one of these octopuses, they will always come out and try them out. The funny bit of this story is that while I was taking pictures of this guy he decided to let the shells go to come to me and grab by pressure gauge. He basically attached itself to me and did not move for a while.

Can you guess what this wild-looking critter is?

This is a tiny baby crab - a "zoea" - of the species Grapsus grapsus (sally lightfoot crabs, adult shown in second photo). Its wacky colors and patterns are the result of an evolutionary compromise between two deadly and opposing forces: predators and ultraviolet light.

Plankton like this zoea make tasty snacks for larger ocean life. Some crab species thus adapted to have transparent zoea, which lets them hide from predators in plain sight. Others, however, have colorful, heavily pigmented zoea - which would seem to be a major drawback. In a recent issue of Ecology, Samuel Bashevkin and his colleagues show that coloration protects these tiny critters from UV light, which damages DNA and other cellular machinery, killing transparent zoea that stay too close to the surface during the day. But pigments absorb UV rays, protecting colorful zoea and letting them stay near the surface longer.

White Sea Urchins (Tripneustes ventricosus), locally called Sea-Egg, are found on seagrass beds and coral reefs in shape regions throughout the islands. They are herbivores which feed on algae and seagrass, and provide a useful ecosystem service by consuming algae on the coral reef ecosystem. They use tube feet for locomotion, as well as to cover themselves with debris/seagrass to protect their bodies from the intense sunlight.

The importance and ecological role of top level predators has only come into focus in the last ~50 years and we are still learning exactly how apex predators like sharks and other wildlife influence their respective ecosystems. Predators not only consume prey affecting prey abundance, but can also impact behavior in the form of predator avoidance. Predators can also indirectly influence prey populations for lower trophic levels as their prey’s prey becomes more or less abundant, and when the impact of a predator on it’s prey’s ecology trickles down to affect the density and or behavior of their prey’s prey the feeding interaction is referred to as a #TrophicCascade (Silliman 2012). This can result in a transformation in an ecosystem characterized by high diversity and productivity to one with reduced biodiversity and function. These transformations have been documented in a variety of ecosystems including kelp beds with the removal of sea otters, mountain forests with the removal of wolves, tropical rainforests with the removal of the majority of vertebrate predators and even salt marshes with the removal of crabs (Silliman 2012). Recognition of this role has implications for conservation planning and ecologists, as the traditional paradigm of natural resource management was that functions across trophic levels were largely regulated by bottom up processes rather than taking top down forces into account.

#BluePlanet ❤️🌎
The ocean is a key element for the existence of life on Earth and comprises 99% of the habitable space on this planet. Roughly 90% of this habitat exists in the deep sea, known as the abyss.
With the ability to dive to a depth of more than 3000 feet as an adult, this ancient mariner might see and understand more about the incredible living sea than we do.
Leatherback sea turtles are the largest living turtles on Earth and the most pelagic of all sea turtles.
While sea turtles have lived on this blue planet for around 110 million years, the biggest threat to this now endangered species is commercial fisheries and exploitation by humans for their eggs and flesh. Marine pollution, most especially balloons mistaken for one of a leatherback’s primary food sources, jellyfish, is also a significant contributing factor to their present risk of extinction.
You can help sea turtles and our blue planet most by choosing vegan and also refusing single-use plastics and balloons.

GOSer Elouise is a passionate Conservation Instructor at New Heaven Reef Conservation Program (Thailand). She spends her days enlightening budding conservationists from around the globe about coral reef ecology, reef threats, mitigating coral decline and how to monitor all of the above. She regularly SCUBA dives to demonstrate restoration methods to her students, while also partaking in data collection on a variety of projects, ranging from coral recruitment, mineral accretion device technology effectiveness, and shark population studies- to name a few! She also helps facilitate a turtle head start program with her dedicated co-workers and interns. 🐢🦈🐠⁣

Shark scientist alert! Hannah (@hannahjean31) is a PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia, where she studies the movement patterns of highly migratory marine animals! She is currently researching the movement patterns of Great Hammerhead, Tiger, and Bull sharks in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean (primarily around the southern USA and The Bahamas). ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
She hopes that by improving our understanding of why we find sharks where we find them, we can reduce the accidental capture of sharks in fisheries. When she isn’t working on her dissertation, Hannah loves to spend her days snorkeling and exploring beautiful Australia!⁣⠀

🚨 ANTARCTICA POST ALERT! 🚨⠀
⠀
GOSer Maya is an Undersea Specialist (underwater videographer and marine science communicator) with Lindblad/National Geographic Expeditions. ⠀
⠀
"When I learned to dive at 14, I never imagined I would ever be diving in Antarctica, let alone as part of my career. This past Austral summer, I had my first opportunity to explore the white continent, diving in the coldest water on the planet (-2C/28F). Most people don’t think of what lives underwater when they think of Antarctica, but the things we love to see most here – the penguins, seals, whales, seabirds – these are all marine species, and therefore rely on healthy ocean ecosystems. Despite being incredibly cold, the waters of Antarctica are rich in dissolved oxygen and nutrients, supporting a diverse, wild and beautiful underwater world of organisms uniquely adapted to this extreme environment. My job in Antarctica is to work as an underwater videographer and science communicator, scuba diving or driving an ROV in places possibly no on has ever seen and bringing to the surface images of what makes this part of the planet so special, exploring and sharing what would otherwise be out of sight-out of mind.”⠀
