languagegoals - 3k posts

I just wanted to share this post for anyone who struggled the same thing as I did. For those who relate, You Are Not Alone... When we have the same goals and are together; united we stand and rise above fear, doubts, and criticism.

Portugalska misja trwa!

😍 ———————————————————————

World Emoji Day! 😁😌😊🌞❤🥰👍🎊😯🤣🤗
The holiday was created in 2014 by Jeremy Burge as a way to celebrate emojis and to popularize their usage. Burge is the creator of Emojipedia, a reference website for emojis. He chose July 17 as the date for the observance because of the way the calendar emoji is displayed on iPhones—a calendar that has July 17 as the default date.

❌ I've been struggling with a continuous headache these last few days so I've (annoyingly) had to ease up on my studying with is super frustrating as my exam is so close 🤦‍♀️ anyway, I've been reviewing vocab this evening using my lists that I made before I finished my course - I stole this method from my students who always do this with their notes 📝 first I'll only have characters showing, and go down the list trying to recite every one and also say it's meaning. then I open so I can see the pinyin, recite again and lastly show the definition too and check any that I missed ✨ #day12 of #100daysofproductivity #learnchinese #learnmandarin #study #studychinese #studywithme #studygram #learningChinese #languagelearning #languagegoals #studynotes #hsk #hsk3 #pinyin #Chinesecharacters #chineselanguage

🚀 My favorite definition of "polyglot" was provided by one of my polyglot profs who said it was "a situation that you find yourself in".
.
🚀 That is certainly the case for me, a person who just wanted to study Spanish, but every single person I have paid to help me with one language has half way through been like "hey do you want to learn some French grammar" or "let me read you some Catalan let's see what you can understand" or "you should study 5 languages at once" and then "hey I know you're studying 5 Romance languages at once but I have a great German course and have you thought about studying 5 Germanic languages at once?" 😂😂😂
.
🚀 I blame you all for the fact that its 6:30a in my time zone and I'm sitting here with a coffee and a Portuguese textbook waiting for my 7a class to start. You truly cannot trust a polyglot to not con you into 3 new languages within a single conversation.

This is something I think I would like to share. Originally created by @annasjapanesedream #languagelearnerstag makes #languagelearningisfun
Here are my answers:
1.#targetlanguage ➡️ ITALIAN & ESTONIAN (big focus on ITALIAN)
2.#FIRSTWORD/ #EXPRESSION learned ➡️ Italian - #spiegare = to explain/ Estonian - #ilusaidunenaagusid = sweet dreams
3.#favoriteword /expression - Italian #chissenefrega = I do not care/ who gives a damn; Estonian #kuu meaning moon and #muna meaning egg - love how they sound
4.#reason for learning - Mi piace molto come e la cultura italiana e me piace molto l'Italia! - and the reason Estonian is my second target language is because I love the culture and I identify myself a lot with their way of life as they are serious, reliable, quiet but once you meet them, very fun to be with and they are e-Estonian making this a very digitized country and truly progressive and since I am an Aquarius, I like everything that's new and different. I also had plans to move to live and work in Tallinn but the stars were not aligning for me at that point in time
5.#studyroutine I study with @language_drops Italian every day, it is my favorite app for that, I listen daily to #coffeebreakitalian
#learnitalian and I enjoy watching not daily but a couple of times a week @lucreziaoddone youtube channel and podcast. Today I listened to all her first 6 podcasts and understood nearly everything so it's going to be soon when I am going to start putting more effort into conversation😏 - For Estonian, at the moment I am learning whnever I have time left. I do not like to have a schedule, I rather learn a tiny bit everyday by doing something fun which all of the tasks above to me define as #fun.
6.#biggestchallenge - finding time and energy to learn, making sure I do a tiny bit every day
7. #languagegoals - Italian, Estonian, Portuguese and potentially Japanese or Korean. But for the moment, I start little with Italian and I adapt to Estonian, I thought I could learn more languages at the same time but it seems I overestimated myself, as ny other #polyglot would do #polyglotproblems
8.Advice for a keen #learner or #learners - keep it simple, short fun and daily.

☕️☕️ Need a double shot of motivation this Monday? Having trouble staying concentrated on your #languagegoals? Change your routine. If you usually study before bed, try reviewing your vocab flashcards or reading the news in your target language with your morning coffee. Or vice versa!
.
.
.
🏞🌆 Sometimes a change of scenery (real or proverbial) is all you need to refocus.

I love this one! It's always good to know some slang but be careful about this one. You don't want to dare anyone in France with this word. This word is rather offensive, meaning that you would use it basically if you want to fight or incite a fight so unless that is what you truly mean don't use it! 🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊.

✨ happy Sunday everyone! ✨ this morning I worked through a hsk3 past exam on @superchinese2018 💻 and (surprisingly) got the same % I did in my practice paper that I sat when I first finished my chinese course! 🎉 I've obviously retained more than I thought I had 😂 I've also gone through the questions I went wrong on and written down the vocab or phrases that I didn't understand or confused me 📝 and I'll use my textbook to review those after lunch~feeling a little more confident about this exam now, fingers crossed I can produce the same results (or better 😏) in the real thing next weekend!! #day11 of #100daysofproductivity feeling super productive and motivated today 💪 #studychinese #study #studywithme #learningChinese #learnmandarin #learnalanguage #languagegoals #languagelearning #studygram #studynotes #hsk #hsk3 #hskpreparation #becomingbilingual #learnchinese

✨ another day, another cram session in preparation for my exam. I think tomorrow I'm going to focus on some listening practice as that's usually my weakest element, and then I can see which topics/grammar points I'm not understanding/getting wrong and focus on reviewing those, rather than try and review the entire book when I do remember a lot of it. ✨ I'm really missing having physical, structured lessons these days, I'm so excited to get back to Shanghai and go back to my chinese classes! also - I've decided I will definitely visit Tokyo during my October holiday, so when I finish my hsk exam, alongside starting hsk4 I'm going to begin some very basic Japanese study, so I can at least speak some basic things there (like order a drink or ask directions etc), so wish me luck for that! 🤯 at lastly, check out my mum's cute snowman table placemats 😂 #day10 #100daysofproductivity #studychinese #secondlanguage #studywithme #learningChinese #learnmandarin #languagegoals #languagelearning #studynotes #studygram #hsk #hsk3 #chineselanguage #Chinese #shanghai

Last week: we were in Slovenia together. This week: I’m back in Germany with our lovely kids, while @mrandthenwemovedto has just flown back to Africa. Yep, that’s right. A can’t-miss leadership workshop in Cake Town that he has to attend in the middle of his vacation. That’s how our expat life rolls. AND all of our family from Italy is coming over for a big fat Italian family reunion in Germany over the next few days to see us! Well, M and I are irrelevant, they’re basically coming to see the kids 😂 My mind is constantly switching between countries, cultures and languages. I wish I spoke better Italian than I do, and every year I vow to do something about it but our lives are so hectic and unpredictable and full-on, something always gives. And it’s usually my Italian goals. My family jokes I suffer from a ‘Fake-Italian-Syndrome’ 😂Until I can speak the language properly, I just feel like an imposter. Have you ever held the nationality of a country but struggled with speaking its language? What language do you wish you spoke better? Let’s share our language woes together 🙏

Top #languagegoals posts

🎶So, I’m officially taking N4 this July 🎵😁 At some point though I considered to forego N4 and go straight for N3 in December. On the other hand, I already set my mind since last year that I’ll be taking N4 this year plus I want to collect the certificates for each level 😅

Seriously, I am looking forward to taking the JLPT by level for the following reasons:
1.) It serves my study guide. Studying a language (or anything for that matter) can be very overwhelming. A lot of times, I feel confused and lost. But sticking to the coverage of the JLPT level helps me to focus one level at a time specially that I do 100% self study.

2.) It serves as a measurement to gauge my progress. I know that lower levels of JLPT (N5/N4) doesn’t mean much still I know for myself that I learned something and still continue to learn more.
3.) It serves as a goal knowing that there is N1 to look forward too.

The original reason why I started studying Japanese is gone. And I don’t have a strong reason right now to study. But I did find that I truly enjoy it and it gives me an excuse to buy the nice books and manga, watch anime and buy every type and color of pens and brushes and notebooks 😅✌🏼 Lastly, I enjoy sharing my journey with all of you and I’m always excited to receive messages, questions and various tips from everyone.
それじゃ頑張れましょう。💪🏼😁 .

One of the coolest things about language learning are the moments, in which we realize that all those hours of study and practice pay off and we are able to actually do things, using this language. In which moment did you feel proud about what you achieved? ☀️ In 2013 I lived and studied in Japan for some months and at one point I was applying for a waitress job at a German restaurant in Tokyo. The job interview was in English and afterwards I was immediately told that I had the job! So, the first day of work came fast and even though my Japanese level wasn't that high and I was quite insecure at first, I realized that I could do it! I served the customers using 3 languages - Japanese, English and sometimes German. The restaurant itself was quite high class. It offered pricey German dishes, I had to wear a "German" uniform and for the dessert I always had to bring all the cakes available to the table and explain in Japanese what they were. Standing there in front of customers in a uniform, talking about the desserts and taking orders, all in Japanese, was one of the moments that made me feel happy and proud 😊 It is always a long path to these kind of moments, but it's worth it! With every minute of study, we get closer to the understanding and ability to communicate in our target languages 🧡 #babbelbrag @babbel

Studying 5 languages simultaneously - sounds insane, but I'm sure it's manageable.
This is my first weekly study plan I made to track and overview all my tasks for my 5 languages: Japanese, Chinese, English, Italian and Korean.

1# important thing: I have only one main focus, which is Japanese.
2#: I have different language levels, from advanced to beginner, which I believe is helpful, too.

The goal is to fill in all the circles, which would mean that I did all the tasks that I want to have finished within one week. The order or day is not important, as long as I finish all my tasks within 7 days.
Starting today, I want to try this out and see if it helps me maintain and improve all my current target languages and to hopefully build a doable and clear routine.
After the first try-out week I'll adjust the workload, in case I feel like I want to do more or less, because this amount of tasks is only based on my estimation.

Anyway, I'm glad to have finally all my current tasks in an overview. I feel like it helps a lot to see them written down clearly and to always know what I could do today to get one step closer to achieving my language goals 😊💪🏻

Hey everyone~
Even though I'm right inside my busy study and soon also exam period, I'm thinking about my future language plans from time to time... and I came to a decision! I want to be a polyglot and there are quite some languages that I want to learn seriously, BUT I can't achieve all my goals at the same time.
That's why I decided to narrow my language focus and postpone some of my goals for one or two years. So, in 2019 I mainly want to study Chinese and Japanese. I want to keep up with Italian and English and get back to some Korean as well, if possible. However, I'll have to say "good bye" to Spanish and Dutch for now! 😔 I only used to have an A1 level in Spanish and still A0 in Dutch and it's simply too much.
I have to focus on what's most important to me, there's no sense to do it any other way!☺
Especially, I'll be spending two semesters abroad and do one additional obligatory internship abroad and my plan is to do all of these in China and/or Taiwan and/or Japan and/or South Korea. It depends on where I get accepted, so I don't know exactly yet but I know that it's gonna be in some of these east Asian countries. That's my goal, dream and motivation!🙂 I want to improve these beloved languages of mine and get fluent in those one day. That's what I mainly want to work on this year 💪🏻💗

Why do polyglots hate the question "how many languages do you speak?" Because we know you're not looking for a 20-minute answer, you are probably just making polite conversation, but we also know that any answer we give will feel either boastful or underwhelming. Do we qualify our abilities, or own our achievements? Also, what do you mean by "speak"? Chat with a taxi driver? Pass a proficiency test? Hold our own at a noisy dinner party? Be interviewed for a podcast? Flirt? Explain to a native 4-year old how to tie his shoe (in my opinion, still the hardest of all)? Korean taxi drivers think my Korean is amazing - I have honed and perfected that common dialogue (what are you doing in Korea? Do you like Korean food? Should I turn right here?) Korean toddlers...are less impressed.

I looooved this @polyglotgathering2019 badge, which let us categorize our languages according to our proficiency. When you join a random group at lunch here at the gathering, it just takes a quick glance around the badges to see what language(s) you have in common, or if someone is fluent in a language you're learning and might be able to recommend resources.

I'm learning a ton and getting so inspired. If you like learning languages (even if, like me, the word "polyglot" still makes you a bit uncomfortable) you should definitely check out the @polyglotgathering!

It took me 8 months to start using my German, I was scared. And maybe that happens to you as well with your Spanish. Share your experience on the comments ⬇️😀⬇️
