In the last discussion, we spoke about why humans like to interact with animals. One of the way by which we tend to interact with animals is by visiting them in zoos.
.
We love seeing monkeys climb trees or a deer grazing or birds flying around or a tiger yawning. All of us are curious about animal behavior and learning more about them is important to our survival as well. But seeing these animals behind bars, inside cages, seems like human depravity.
.
There is no study showing that we learn better if the animal is in a zoo or if it's in the wild. If I can learn about my brain without actually seeing it, I can learn about animals without capturing and torturing them. If zoos teach anything, they teach us dangerous lessons. They teach us that humans have the right to enslave animals and reinforce the notion that animals have no other purpose other than for our gain. Zoos do not teach us to respect individuals.

Changeable hawk-eagle (Nisaetus cirrhatus)

The changeable hawk-eagle or Indian crested hawk-eagle is a large, commonly sighted bird of prey. They get their name from the fact that their appearance changes as they grow, from white to brown. They share their territory with other birds of prey like Serpent eagles and Crested honey buzzards. All three share a prey pallet and are largely non-aggressive towards each other.

The great stone-curlew or great thick-knee is a large wader which is a resident breeder in tropical southern Asia from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh into South-east Asia. This species prefers gravel banks along rivers or large lakes, and also beaches. A single egg is laid in a bare scrape on the open shingle.. - •

Resharing A Story of Leopard and Cow which is stranger than a Fiction from Gujarat !!
.
.
.
Even tho the story is from 2003 we thought it would be nice to share it on @wildlife__focus as It was a rare case of predator-prey friendship. A leopard coming to ‘visit’ a cow at night literally became the talk of the town. The incredible ways of the two animals at Antoli village in Vadodara district attracted the attention of one and all, including the wild life activists. Local villagers were first to notice the frequent visits of a leopard to the sugarcane field for its close encounter with a cow in the field. Immediately they alerted the wildlife department. One team comprising wildlife warden Mr Rohit Vyas, conservator of forest H S Singh and other enthusiasts including wildlifer Manoj Thakkar and Kartik Upadhyay visited the village several times for verification and found that the leopard has been visiting the cow at regular intervals. Mr Vyas says, "It was unbelievable, they approached each other at
very close proximity and the fearless cow licked the leopard on its head and neck. The dogs would bark when the leopard came to meet the waiting cow every night between 9.30 PM to 10.30 PM". The Forest Department which was trying to capture the beast, gave up its efforts after learning about the friendship. Moreover, the leopard did not harm other animals or human beings in the area. Its visit benefited villagers as other animals who damage the crops were scared away. That year the village’s crop yields went up by 30 percent.

#BirdsOfUran; Panje a Locality in Uran City of Maharashtra India is a favourite among photographers for it's wetland which host several species of birds, local and migratory. This wetland has hold strong even in today's time, but it's now struggling for survival due to rapid uncontrolled urbanization around itself.  I'm lucky enough to have been able to see such innumerable species of birds at a single place and click them. My first ever attempt at Birding.

For an animal with a strange name, the gaur sure does make a cute baby! That’s what you’re looking at folks, gaur calves, the youngest of a species of wild cattle that is currently vulnerable to extinction. Also known as “Indian Bison”, they are native to South and Southeast Asia and has unfortunately seen their population drop by about seventy percent in the last few decades. There are currently efforts to rebuild the population, and they’ve resulted in a stabilization of their numbers. Gaur calves are usually the result of singular births after a nine month gestation period, and they ween from their mother’s care after about a year of living. From that point, the gaur can live up to another thirty years, during which time it will grow horns (unlike other bovine species, both males and females develop horns), engage of most of their activity at night (they have a forced nocturnal nature, as their habitat is encroached upon by humans during the daytime), and live in small herds.

Indian Pitta..!!
The Indian Pitta is a  passerine bird native to the Indian Subcontinent. It inhabits scrub jungle, deciduous and dense evergreen forest. It breeds in the forests of Terai in the monsoons and migrates to Southern India in winter. Although very colourful, it is usually shy and hides in the thick undergrowth where it picks insects from the forest floor. It has a distinctive two note whistling call which is heard at dawn and dusk.

A magical sighting in the greens few days back of this enigmatic Cat when he was hot on the trail of a Leopardess. He emerged from the undergrowth after a series of deafening Langur and Deer alarm calls from one of his preferred pathways. He kept continuously sawing while walking towards us and marking before moving into the dense undergrowth again. Those few minutes were simply spectacular. The winter is here when the Panther is most active. The next few months should be very interesting.

Death Magnetic

Fox ears are especially sensitive to low frequencies, and they can hear animals burrowing through the snow cover.

If it hears an animal, a fox can dig through it and catch it.

They can also see the earth's magnetic field, just like sharks, birds and turtles.

It's hard to explain how they do this exactly, but it does aid them in hunting when they can't see their prey.

The Stare I longed for!!! She was resting by a stream of water well inside the jungle trail. All I could see was a glimpse of her. She was well asleep and I was just observing her beauty through my lens. As I was watching her, without even moving herself an inch, she just opened her eyes and gave this intense look.
