highlandclearances - 825 posts

The Highland Clearances were the evictions of a significant number of tenants in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, mostly in the period 1750 to 1860.

On a notice board near the statue read," The last view of home." which left my heart feeling heavy. Not only because of the history of my country & people but also to the fact that this is a truth for so many people in the world today. Many people from different places across the globe having no choice but to leave their home and seek safety elsewhere. I have many, many amazing young students who face such trails. My sincere duas go to them and to those facing such issues.

Day 1 of the North Coast 500 route:

Our first night in the highlands was pleasant. We stayed in a lovely BnB with amazing hosts. We all had eggs for breakfast and then set off to John O'Groats, the highest point of the Scotland & the UK.

First stop was to a monument dedicated to the highland clearances. This was just over an hour's drive north of Inverness and a beautiful drive at that.

The monument in Helmsdale in remembrance of the people of Scotland who were evicted from their homes during the Highland Clearances and shipped off to countries like the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to make way for a more profitable commodity which their landlords could make more money from - sheep.
This mass exodus would occur right across the Highlands from Sutherland to Wester Ross and beyond to the islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides, and it also happened in the Lowlands of Scotland where tens of thousands of people were evicted from their homes too. Almost 400,000 or more people were evicted from all of these places between the 18th and 19th centuries.
In some specific cases, some of these people's homes were ransacked, set alight and their livestock slaughtered by the factors of landlords in order to forcibly and cruelly remove them from the land in which their namesakes had lived on for many generations. Even if elderly or sick people lived in those homes, the factors would set fire to the thatched roof and timber to coerce the families to leave as soon as possible and in one particular case, an old lady died as a result of these factors' heavy-handed actions.

For those who were more impoverished than others, they either had to move to treacherous clifftop areas such as the nearby village of Badbea or reside on the coast and try to maintain an existence by fishing and gathering kelp.
In many cases, these means of living got too difficult and they would also eventually leave Scotland for the new worlds across the Atlantic, never to see their homeland again.
This monument serves as a reminder to these shameful and sad events in Scotland's history and as a tribute to the people who endured such hardships.

I've driven past these monuments a few times and always wondered what they signified. Today I was able to stop and explore. The first three pics show a memorial to the Deer Park Raiders of Balallan on Harris. The next four photos commemorate the place on Harris where the Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie came ashore in May 1746 in the Outer Hebrides 18 days after fleeing from Culloden. Two fantastic locations commemorating two important episodes in Scottish history.

Ah, for the glens are lyin' bare,
And the wee bit farm deserted,
And the woods of Germany,
Grows in rows o'er the broken hearted.

Black is the wood on the roofance was braw
But blacker still is your heart, Victoria,
Sent your men untae our glens
You'll need the Good Lord lookin' o'er ye.

Many hae gane tae Americay
You burnt their hames and garred them wander
Gor a' would have stayed wi' the de'il himsel'
As bide an hour wi' the cruel Gillanders.

Ah, for the glens are lyin' bare
And the wee bit farm deserted
And the woods of Germany
Grows on rows o'er the broken hearted.

My holiday read finished. Picked this up after my recent Raasay trip. Glad I did as it’s an excellent read - a testament to the extraordinary man, as well as the surprising, if infuriating, history of Raasay and the treatment of its people - from the cruelty of the clearances to Calum MacLeod’s determination to keep his island community alive in the face of deliberate neglect and decline by faraway authorities. This book is worth a read! #SummerReads #Raasay #CalumsRoad #Scotland #History #highlandclearances #ScottishBooks #goodreads

Visiting the ruins of my ancestors’ home on Harris was quite an emotional moment, just a stone’s throw from Harris Tweed and Harris Gin distillery. Incredible to see some thriving industries where there was once the devastation brought about by the Highland Clearances #heritage #scotland #outerhebrides #highlandclearances #harrisandlewis #clanmacleod

The Highland Clearances are an often unknown area of Scotland’s history - but what were they? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland used to be run in clan format, and many clans supported Bonnie Prince Charlie in his Jacobite Rebellion. After his defeat at the Battle of Culloden (which is mentioned in a previous post), King George II wanted clansmen who fought for the Jacobites punished. This is where Scotland changed - thousands of people were forced out of their Highland homes, forced into cities and other countries.
To worsen this, throughout the Highlands, kilts were banned, as were bagpipes & speaking gaelic. Rents were raised and social conditions deteriorated, making life in the highlands incredibly difficult.
It wasn’t until 1886 that the Crofters' Holdings (Scotland) Act 1886 put an end to the Clearances by granting security of tenure to crofters. #history #historyfacts #highlandclearances #skye #highlands #scotland #scottishhistory

"You be liking the view then wee sassenach"

I bloody well was, I knew enough about the #highlandclearances and #Culloden as a teenager before I arrived. Living in NZ 22yrs ago I was introduced to #dragonflyinamber a new unknown writer for me. I have pictures in my mind as I read and my ones from #reading the #history, plus the #fiction overlay one another, gave me a fuller picture in my mind. Visiting #Dores watching the sun settle over the #Loch, I a #sassenach, felt as if I arrived in #Scottish history as my view was so close to the one fixed in my mind. #visitscotland

Consider the lilies is a short novel setting on the context of the Highland Clearances. One of the cruellest episodes in Scotland's history (end of 18th to mi 19th century) where crofters were evicted from their homes so the landlords, Dukes, could have those lands with sheeps.
.
.
Here, we follow an elderly woman's memories and though, Mrs Scott, who was told that in a short time sur has to leave the house where she was born, grew up. As a widow, living on her own and God fear, she seeked help to the minister. Not satisfied, and after to have face the hypocrisis from this man, started then in her mind a religious crisis. Especialy after she was in her atheist neighbour's care, to whom she always refused to talk and turn to, and started to know him. And there, she would find the courage she need.
.
.
Interesting reading about a religious crisis. And how people might have felt then when they heard about their eviction. But surprisely, I was expecting a bit more about historical fact, learning a bit more on this topic that I discovered through my study back there ( HNC social sciences, semester 1). Don't take it wrongly, I appreciated the book and I think I would have been like Mrs Scott doubting about God, etc. It is a beatiful novel but I was expecting a bit more. Have you read it?

Ben Klibreck across Loch Naver, Sutherland, Scotland on a bright morning in May. The lovely valley of Strath Naver runs from the East end of the Loch to Bettyhill on the north coast. It is also the site of a number of settlements that were subject to the clearances. There is one on the hill just behind where this photo was taken. A hard life but in wonderful surroundings the people of the time would have been happy to call home before being rudely cleared out.

Not many people publish their first book at ninety. Alwyn Edgar's "Clans and Clearance" documents the lives, customs and traditions of the Scottish Highlanders before the "Highland Clearances" drove most of them out of the Highlands, and is an investigation into who was responsible, along with some remarks on the way these events have been treated by orthodox historians, and some general thoughts on the clearances themselves. Hardback available to order now. #scottishhistory #highlandclearances #scotland #highlands #history #bookstagram

Day trip from the #HeartofSutherland: #Badbea Clearance Village between Helmsdale and Berriedale is the haunting site of a now abandoned settlement. Following the Highland Clearances people were forced to live here, having been cleared from the fertile straths inland. Though beautiful, it is a windswept and bleak spot. These photos show it on a warm summer's day but you can imagine how bitter it must have felt, high on that cliff in mid winter.

Perched onto of the hill, you can see it as you drive along the Cromarty Firth. It was built by the local population that were getting cleared off the lands, it kept them in labour.

It represents the Gate of Negapatam in Chennai, India.

Love the library, not sure about the questionable animal skins all over the floor.
This is the library in Dunrobin Castle, Golsie, in the Scottish Highlands.
The castle was once home to the 1st Duke of Sutherland, infamous for his controversial role in the Highland Clearances when thousands of tenants were cleared - many of them burned out of their crofts - to make way for more profitable sheep.

Gather round for a tale of two Sutherland statues.
If you’ve ever driven through Golspie, you’ll have seen the 100ft statue of the first Duke of Sutherland that looms large over the village from his perch atop Ben Bhraggie, like some sort of Highland Batman.
But this is no superhero. He’s been repeatedly vandalised over the years, and in 1994, someone even tried to blow him up with dynamite.
Why? Because George Leveson-Gower was the landowner responsible for some of the Highland Clearances’ most dreadful displacements. Those living on his estate were forced to leave to make way for sheep.
Some locals think the Mannie, as he’s known in the area, should be taken down.
It was their campaign to have him removed that eventually led to another statue – this time commemorating those evicted by the Duke, many of whom emigrated to Canada, America, Australia and New Zealand to start new lives on distant shores – being commissioned for nearby Helmsdale, the village created in 1814 to resettle those who lost their homes in the Clearances.
Artist Gerald Laing’s sculpture is a poignant, powerful reminder of the horrors of the Highland Clearances.
There is a matching monument in Winnipeg in Canada, the city founded by some of Sutherland’s evictees.

Yesterday I had my first ever visit to Cromarty. What a delight. Wonderful place. Beautiful buildings & vennels and a lovely but sadly derelict chapel, built for the Gaelic speaking folks who were hounded out of the Highlands because of the Highland Clearances. #scottishhistory #history #houses #architecture #vennels #chapel #gaelicchapel #highlands #highlandclearances #cromarty #Scotland #thisisscotland #igscotland #visitscotland #nature #naturephotography #landscape #landscapephotography #scotspirit #instascotland #ig_scotland #outdoors #lovescotland #scotlandlover #thegreatoutdoors #explorescotland #unlimitedscotland #ScotlandIsNow #ukpotd @visitscotland

LEJOG Day 71
Helmsdale to Dunbeath

I'm a bit behind on my posting because when camping I need to save battery power.

This was a really tough day on the John O'Groats Trail. I would say that it was unwalkable, except that somehow I did walk it. There was a very steep down-climb to Ousedale Burn, which was, of course, trickier with a full backpack on. There was much overgrown vegetation to walk through where you couldn't see what was underfoot: rocks, burns, branches, fencing wire, gaps where the footpath had collapsed. There were many fences to cross and they don't all have gates or stiles but they do all have plenty of barbed wire. (If you're thinking of doing this trail, take about half a metre of plumbers pipe insulation tubing which you can put around the barbed wire while you cross, and it would light to carry.) The scenery was outstanding and, until it rained in the afternoon, it was definitely a butterfly day. I climbed the Ord of Caithness, visited the clearance village of Badbea, with its memorial, reached Berriedale ten minutes after the café closed and camped next to a geo above Dunbeath (in a thunderstorm).

Went for a hike in my neck of the woods recently. Very fortunate to live where I do, but as an ecologist, I can't help but look at the deforested hills in despair. Much of the Highlands are like this; beautiful but overgrazed and not fulfilling their ecological potential. It's not only much of the wildlife that's missing, but also the people, who were cleared along with the last forests to make way for millions of sheep. We're now at a land use crossroads and some areas are regaining their forests, but as with any change, it can't happen overnight and involves much communication and compromise between landowners and conservationists. Interesting times ahead... #deforestation #rewilding #scottishhighlands #rewildingeurope #rewildingscotland #highlandclearances #naturephotography

On the weekend reading pile this week we have this book by David Craig. A really moving account of the clearances by the descendants of those that were deported to Novia Scotia, and who still remember the tales, either in letter format from relatives, or through stories from their great great grandparents passed down through the family #highlandclearances #crofters #scotland #isleofskye

On the way back from Orkney last Monday, we stopped to visit Badbea clearance village. In the late eighteenth century wealthy landowners looking to make yet more money undertook sweeping ‘agricultural improvements’. Valuing sheep above people, hundreds of Highland families were forcibly moved from their traditional homes in the fertile glens to barren coastal sites such as Badbea. It was extremely hard to scratch a living from the poor soil and in bad weather, cows, chickens and even children were tethered to prevent them from being blown off the cliffs! The monument honours some of those who lived and were born here.

Walk up Ben Bhraggie today, but the weather was not that good and we could not see far at the summit due to low cloud.
The top of the hill is dominated by a monument for the 1st Duke of Sutherland. It is hard to grasp the scale of monument unless there are other walkers at the base. The 100 foot statue is of George Granville Leveson-Gower, the first Duke of Sutherland, notorious for his role in the forced clearances of his tenants to make way for sheep in the early nineteenth century. After his death in 1833, money for the statue was raised by subscription and the stone was quarried nearby and the statue brought up by horse and cart in pieces. More recently some campaigners have called for the monument to be removed but many locals beleive it should remain to remind of his role in the clearances

Been wandering the mountains for 30 years now. I used to live in Kent but my heart was always in Scotland. Generations of MacDonalds living in Glenfinnan.. until the 1800s. No idea of how and why the family left but I can only speculate. Aged 14, I took to hillwalking and this selfie of a solo wild camp on Stac Pollaidh is perhaps where I feel most at home.
