“How do I hit my macros when I’m sick?”

I get this question from clients as some don’t have much of an appetite when sick OR are wondering if there’s a more optimal way to macro ratio to help w/ getting better, & there actually is!

And I realize it's that time of year when just about EVERYONE seems to get the dreaded winter cold! So I thought I would share some science on why keeping your protein up when you feel a cold coming on (or when you're sick) is SO important for getting better!
.
.
Through my studies at @nasm_fitness I learned that protein needs are actually higher when sick because proteins are what fight bacteria that accumulates when we're getting sick. So when we're really fatigued from a cold it's because our bodies are working extra hard to try to get everything back to normal!
.
.
Our bodies can create & use the proteins we have in them to fight off bacteria, but if they're not replenished often then it can be a slower process for us to get over a cold! That's why keeping your protein up when you're sick is important for getting better!
.
.
Carbs need to be adequate too as they provide the best source of energy for our bodies to run properly🥖🍞
.
.
If you're counting macros, I suggest keeping your calories the same but lowering fat grams a bit (which take more energy to digest) & increasing protein & carbs until you feel better🤗
.
.
It’s funny how this concept is even shown in ways we may not have thought of! Like, what’s the most common food that's recommended for getting over a cold? Chicken Noodle Soup! Because it's packed with protein & carbs while being low in fat! The perfect combo to give our bodies the fuel to get better!
.
.
Some other cold fighting foods:
-Egg White Veggie Omelette & Toast(add bell pepper for a BIG dose of vitamin C!)
-Protein Powder Smoothie w/ berries (packed with antioxidants!)
-Lean Cut Delhi Meat on Toast w/ mustard -Lean Cut Steak & Potatoes
-Protein Oats
-Lentils & Rice is a great Vegan option

Also, keeping water intake high is SO important in our bodies running best also & to balance out higher sodium foods like soups!
.
.
Anyone currently feeling sick? 🤒🤧 What meal do you find makes you feel best?

Here are some ways you can burn calories that don't involve a treadmill!⁣

1) Go on walks. Going on walks during your breaks or in the morning/evening is a great way to clear your mind and burn a good amount of calories.⁣

2) Take the stairs. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is a great option to burn more calories. Lead by example! Maybe some of your coworkers will take note and follow your lead.⁣

Firecracker Salmon with Zoodles
𝕀ℕ𝔾ℝ𝔼𝔻𝕀𝔼ℕ𝕋𝕊:
1 large salmon cut in half
4 large zucchini’s spiralized
1 cup mushrooms sliced
1/2 onion sliced
1 cup small broccoli florets
2 tbl olive oil
2 tbl low fat soy sauce
2 tsp minced garlic
2 tsp minced ginger
3 tbl buffalo sauce
2 tsp sriracha
2 tsp brown sugar
2 pinches red pepper flakes
2 tsp sesame oil
Pepper, salt, garlic powder and paprika **Top with green onion, sesame seeds and lemon juice
𝕊𝕋𝔼ℙ𝕊:
1.) Mix one half of the olive oil, soy sauce, garlic, ginger , buffalo, sriracha, brown sugar, red pepper flakes & sesame oil in one shallow bowl and the other half in a small mixing bowl
2.) Sprinkle on the salmon evenly the pepper, salt garlic powder and paprika. Then in the shallow bowl of sauce add the salmon coating evenly. Marinate for 2 hours or however long you choose
3.) In a shallow baking dish over medium to medium high heat add the salmon with juices skin side up, cook for about 8 minutes without moving, flip over and cook for another 5, check your salmon to make sure it flakes and is opaque then it’s cooked through
4.) While that’s happening with the salmon in another dish add the onion, mushroom and broccoli with a drizzle of olive oil cook for 5-8 minutes, add the Zoodles and the remaining sauce from the other bowl, cook for another 10 minutes, serve the noodles on the side of your salmon, top with your toppings and enjoy!! -

This salmon will tickle your taste buds with that delicious spice! Less is more if you don’t like spicy things, start with a little then taste test to see how it is. This would also be paired well with brown rice or pad Thai noodles with the sauce as well. I portioned our half this recipe to bring to work so it would be awesome for leftovers as well!

1.) Mix one half of the olive oil, soy sauce, garlic, ginger , buffalo, sriracha, brown sugar, red pepper flakes & sesame oil in one shallow bowl and the other half in a small mixing bowl 
2.) Sprinkle on the salmon evenly the pepper, salt garlic powder and paprika. Then in the shallow bowl of sauce add the salmon coating evenly. Marinate for 2 hours or however long you choose 
3.) In a shallow baking dish over medium to medium high heat add the salmon with juices skin side up, cook for about 8 minutes without moving, flip over and cook for another 5, check your salmon to make sure it flakes and is opaque then it’s cooked through 
4.) While that’s happening with the salmon in another dish add the onion, mushroom and broccoli with a drizzle of olive oil cook for 5-8 minutes, add the Zoodles and the remaining sauce from the other bowl, cook for another 10 minutes, serve the noodles on the side of your salmon, top with your toppings and enjoy!! -

This salmon will tickle your taste buds with that delicious spice! Less is more if you don’t like spicy things, start with a little then taste test to see how it is. This would also be paired well with brown rice or pad Thai noodles with the sauce as well. I portioned our half this recipe to bring to work so it would be awesome for leftovers as well!

Full of flavour yet nice and light before weigh-in tomorrow morning 😬😋 Chop Shop is definitely creeping it’s way back up to the top of the list for East Village restaurants!! The new menu is so much broader - I’ll be back for the Ramen!! 🤤 🍜 .
@ben_7292 had the pork ribs which just fell off the bone beautifully! With crispy duck gyozas and special fried rice!

1/4 cup parmesan cheese⠀
2 large handfuls baby spinach⠀
1 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves⠀
Extra virgin olive oil to drizzle on top of completed oats⠀
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper⠀

To make the oats, in a heavy saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat, add the shallots and cook for a few minutes until soft. Add the oats and roasted garlic cloves and stir them around in the butter until the oats smell a bit nutty, 3 minutes or so. Pour in the water and bring to a boil, stirring all the while.⠀
When the oats start to bubble heavily at the edge, and the liquid looks thick, 15 minutes or so, sprinkle in the salt. Keep stirring for 5 to 7 minutes more, until the oats are creamy and tender. Remove from heat. Add the thyme, spinach and Parmesan. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon into bowls and top with roasted asparagus and sautéed mushrooms and a fried egg

Creamy Savory Steel Cut Oats with Roasted Garlic, Spinach and Parmesan with mushrooms and asparagus⠀

SALMON POWER BOWL⠀⠀

To make this dish:⠀⠀

1. I coat a piece of salmon liberally with A.A. borsari seasoning, squeeze half a lemon, and air fried for 18 minutes at 380.⠀⠀
.⠀⠀
2.While the salmon was going, I cut a soft boiled egg (I do multiple at a time to use throughout the week... just boil for for about 6.5 minutes, ice bath, and store in fridge).⠀⠀
.⠀⠀
3.Grabbed a serving bowl and filled the bottom with a big serving of power greens, and some French beans I stir fried with hemp hearts.⠀⠀
.⠀⠀
4.Put the salmon and egg over the veggies and served with sliced cucumber, some avocado, and not pictured, a tahini lemon dressing.⠀⠀

5.Devoured with a smile.

Vegan Pierogi stuffed with potato and vegan cheddar! ⠀

Recipe: Makes 15 big pierogi or 25-30 smaller ones.⠀⠀
Dough⠀⠀
3 cups all purpose flour⠀⠀
1 cup warm water⠀⠀
3 tbsp olive oil⠀⠀
1/4 tsp salt⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Filling⠀⠀
3 russet potatoes⠀⠀
1/3 cup almond milk (or any non-dairy milk)⠀⠀
1/4 cup vegan sour cream⠀⠀
3 tbsp vegan butter⠀⠀
1/8 tsp black pepper⠀⠀
1/4-1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)⠀⠀
2 oz vegan cheddar cheese, grated⠀⠀
1/2 vidalia onion⠀⠀
1 cup water⠀⠀
3-5 tbsp vegan butter for pan-frying⠀⠀
Vegan sour cream for serving⠀⠀

METHOD⠀⠀
Peel and chop the potatoes.⠀⠀
Thinly slice the onions.⠀⠀
In a pot with boiling water add the potatoes and cook for 20-30 minutes until fork tender.⠀⠀
To caramelize the onions add 1 cup of water into a pan. Add the onions and continuously stir and check on them. Do this at a very low heat.⠀⠀
Prepare dough by adding all ingredients into a bowl and using a fork to lightly combine dough together.⠀⠀
Once a shaggy dough has formed, spill it out onto a clean surface and begin to knead with hands.⠀⠀
This will take about 10 minutes and work until a smooth dough is formed. If the dough feels a little dry add in 1 tbsp of water.⠀⠀
Once you can form it into a ball let it rest for 15-20 minutes. Cover it while it rests so it doesn’t dry out.⠀⠀
The potatoes should now be done and you can add drain them.⠀⠀
Add in the rest of the filling ingredients except the vegan cheese and mash the potatoes. Get it as fluffy and mashed as possible.⠀⠀
Once the potatoes are cooled down you can then add in the vegan cheese. Mix to distribute it evenly

• 1/2 block of firm tofu, drained and pat dry and cut into small cubes⠀⠀⠀
• 8 caps of Chinese mushrooms, soaked until soft, chopped⠀⠀⠀
• 2 tsp black bean sauce (substitute with 2 tsp soy sauce + 1/2 tsp maple syrup)⠀⠀⠀
• 1lb bok choy, washed and julienned into thin strips⠀⠀⠀
• 1 package of dumpling wrapper⠀⠀⠀
• sesame oil⠀⠀⠀
• salt and pepper to taste⠀⠀⠀

DIRECTIONS:⠀⠀⠀
Place julienned bok choy in a large bowl with 1/2 tsp salt, using your hands, gently fold all the veggies together. Set aside for 15-20mins.⠀⠀⠀

In a heated pan with 1 tsp oil, saute mushrooms until lightly brown, add black bean sauce and stir until well combined, set aside and pan fry tofu cubes until lightly brown. Place both ingredients in a big bowl.⠀⠀⠀
Using a cheesecloth or just with your palms, squeeze as much liquid out as possible from your bok choy. Add to your tofu mixture, combine well & season.⠀⠀⠀
