In the west, we‘ve adopted what we ‘do’ as being who we are. e.g.: “I’m a wedding photographer,” “people expect ‘this thing,’ so I have to do ‘this thing,’ give them ‘this thing’ or what I share, or even I, won’t be received.” Then when I draw a blank for some deep, inspirational caption, and the inquiries aren’t coming in, filling my schedule with creative, monetizing work, it only fosters negative feelings about my worth. Admitting a quiet season, makes me feel seen as not doing anything ‘important’ with my life, especially when asked that condemning question, “so what do you do all day?” Why do so many of us allow people’s opinions to shape our personal definition? Even sub-consciencely?
Here I am planting seeds for more strategic marketing and waiting…working on blog posts for SEO and waiting…creating every day and not getting paid; re-building a business every day and just waiting, waiting, waiting. And yet SHAME, it hits heavy like metal. Judgment shivers down my spine like a whisper on my neck.
I watch women in my life either occupied by being moms or peaking their careers, or many, rocking both. “A quiet season means you’re ready for children, Eastlyn.” Shame…I know I’m not ready to be a mom…shame…and not sure if I ever will be one (and never actually sharing that before because, um, shame). Shame from women’s comments…shame from other photographers’ perceptions…shame from myself.
This morning I sat for three hours and read, and prayed, and journaled. I never thought that I struggled with shame until this morning. As I was examining myself, writing reflective questions about where I want to grow, what I want to change, I finally realized that I’ve been dealing with shame for years—I was just never able to identify it before. Christine Cain says, “Shame loses its power when it’s expressed.” So, this is me, proclaiming my real identity: “Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot...they shall have everlasting joy” (Is 61:7). Choosing today to “rejoice in [my] lot.” Embracing Everlasting Joy on Good Friday.

Nyhavn in Copenhagen Denmark is a 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district. It is lined by brightly coloured 17th and early 18th century townhouses and bars, cafes and restaurants. Have you ever visit here?
