From The Abbotsford News: "Through a small gap in the trees and down a dirt slope, worn down almost to a small staircase, is Shane Knight’s campsite in Surrey’s “Sanctuary” tent city.

He’s one of several people that have moved into the area, which is down King George hill in a forested area near Bridgeview.

Like others in the camp, he’s set it up with a makeshift tent and bed, along with his few belongings.

But what stands out is something Knight, 38, has been building over the past two months.

Painted red and black is a workout machine, with weights and pulleys for Knight to keep up his fitness regime. He’s gone so far to put together a makeshift barbell.

Knight estimates that he could do more than 30 different workouts with the machine.

I’ve been doing this eight hours a day; salvaging, building or shaping or something for two months,” he told the Now-Leader as he sanded down the handle for the pulley system.

Doing it with no shop and no car and with no money, all posed major difficulties.” Knight said he salvaged all the materials for free, going through throwaway piles at construction sites.

It gives more meaning to trees giving their lives too because then their limbs get to go to making more really cool stuff than just in a landfill.

He said he also spent about 30 hours collecting bottles and taking them to the depot for cash to by the ropes, screws and other hardware to put the machine together.

Had a friend ask about adding movements into her training to help with bow hunting. Here’s what I came up with. Not an all inclusive list, but sure to help with core and shoulder stability as well as horizontal pulling strength.

Had a friend @theelbow ask about adding movements to her workout regimen to help with her new venture of bow hunting. I admit I’ve never had anyone ask for movements to help with bow hunting, but here’s what came to mind.

She’s already a bad ass momma who stays fit, but adding some of this stuff to her quiver will help to do a few things: promote core and shoulder stability while increasing horizontal pulling power - all of which are important when drawing back a bow and keeping a steady aim.

Do I love lifting weights in my very hot, garage gym in July? No, not really.  It’s really quite miserable in this heat.  But dancing and singing between sets keeps me going and makes it fun for me.  It’s also a choice I have to daily make with my attitude towards working out.  If I’m always dreading my workouts, it would be very difficult to stay consistent and probably create more stress and affect my overall health and results.  Exercise should be a stress reliever and increase the joy in your life.  The best program to start with is one that you can adhere to and be consistent.  It may not be your best friend’s workout or the trendiest workout out there.  It may take you some time to find something you enjoy.  Just like I tell my kids with all the meals I spend hours preparing for them, you don’t know if you will like it until you try it first!  So you better try it!  Be open minded with exploring new workouts or maybe today you decide to change your outlook before your workout.  Shift your focus from dread to the joy you receive knowing that you are living a healthier life. .

Monday was crazy busy, but I finally got the WOD done! At 11:43pm lol. Definitely some more than nothing! I love burpees and kipping pull ups, but hate thrusters. I'd say this was a pretty fun workout overall 😉

Monday was crazy busy, but I finally got the WOD done! At 11:43pm lol. Definitely some more than nothing! I love burpees and kipping pull ups, but hate thrusters. I'd say this was a pretty fun workout overall 😉

Squats deadlifts and sandbags. Tight hip early on in the squats. I could feel it but watching the video I can see it. Got better the further I got in. Stamina squats today. 1 front squat on odd minutes 3 back squats on even minutes for 12 minutes. Deadlifts 3 x 3 times 3 total sets. Then sandbag WOD of sandbag deadlifts then sandbag power clean to throw over box.

It’s amazing what can happen over the years. The body is an incredible machine. 💪🏻💪🏻 On the left is me just entering into the world of CrossFit. It was the Beach WOD by UG series. We were just starting out on our fitness journey.  It was such an amazing experience....fast forward 5 years and I’m in a whole new world of the crossfit experience. We have our own garage gym now where I get to workout with some amazing people and still help train here occasionally to fuel my passion of teaching.  I am beyond excited to see what the future brings for skills and strength this year! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💜

“I could never be a coach because I’m not at my goal body”

I get this message pretty much daily from women who know they’re meant for more but don’t believe enough in themselves quite yet.

I ask you to think of it a little differently today... Think about showing people what it’s like to show up through the HARD. To show people who you really are.

Think about being able to tell people all of your big goals and being able to inspire them to make some of their own.

Think about that new mama who is so exhausted and is scrolling through Instagram... she comes across a video of you working out with your little ones and decides to move her body a little more that day.

Think about that wife who just wants to feel close to her husband again - and she sees a silly picture of you laughing with your spouse because you’ve learned to feel good in your own skin again and let your guard down.

Think about being able to share what you’ve found to help you get through the “I can’t do this anymore days”

But most importantly I want you to know that sharing your climb is showing someone else that if you can do it... they can too ❤️ It took me awhile to feel comfortable putting myself out there but I promise there’s been nothing more rewarding than grabbing another woman’s hand to come along with me for the ride. You can be that for someone too.

Static front lunges are 🔥! These are the best if you don’t have much space and a great way to get a good power move in, by pushing hard off your toe to stand back up straight. Focus on the toe point and squeeze your butt with each rep. 🏋🏻‍♂️ Slow and controlled movements. One leg full reps, then switch to the other!

One of my very first DIY Projects was a tire sled just like this.

My wife and I were driving back from our CrossFit Gym that we went to literally every day. I saw this old tire on the side of the road and I threw it in the back of my truck because I figured I could make a torture device out of it.

I ended up coming up with an idea to add weight and a carabinier to it, and off I went.
_
I love new equipment, it's obvious by our reviews, but you can get just as fit using old, rusted, and DIY equipment. Anyone who tells you differently is trying to sell you something in a disingenuous manner. Even most of the gym equipment manufacturer owners use some sort of DIY equipment in their own gyms.
_
Don't let a lack of money stop you from building a home gym. Your gym doesn't have to look like mine. Create it to meet your goals, both physical and fiscal.

“The Scoop”

As defined by Greg Everett @catalystathletics “the double knee bend (AKA scoop) is the temporary cessation of extension and forward movement of the knees during the final explosive extension of the snatch and clean.”
.
Possibly the trickiest part of both the clean and the snatch, the scoop is vital for an efficient lift as it places the athlete in an upright jumping position with the bar still under the shoulders.
.
Aside from working positional exercises (hang cleans from position 1 or 2), two cues that I have found most helpful are:
🗝“Slow down (control) the first pull”
🗝“Hips meet bar in pocket”
.
