Arguing the viewpoint that graphic design can change the world, with the help of Cino, RIP. Presented in the style of constructivist propaganda posters of yesteryear, because BAM! that's one way in which graphic design has effected change in society.

On the blog: Florence Fu explores The Complete Commercial Artist (現代商業美術全集). This rare set of Japanese trade publications serves a visual feast of modern graphics and lettering, as well as a study of early-20th-century interactions between Japan and the West.  Link in bio, then tap this image.

For the last 8 weeks I’ve been working on some blog posts about the history and theories of design. I’ve found it to be really interesting (much to my initial surprise) and I’ve learnt a lot (and want to keep learning about the influences on design and the influences of design on other areas of life.) Anyway, this week was an analysis of the post digital age (hint: thats now), I’d appreciate it if you could check it out from the link in bio, and hopefully learn something whilst your there. ✌️

Congratulations to Kähler, the Danish ceramics brand that turns 180 this year. Had the great pleasure to celebrate with the brand in Copenhagen last month, and saw the beautifully curated exhibition which showed the development of the designs and how new objects are inspired by pieces from Kähler’s extensive archive. Here the Omaggio surrounded by the ceramic vases that influenced the design studio Stilleben in creating the contemporary vase. I spy... Holden vs Ford. The history of Australian automotive design is rich and diverse but one dominant, ever present theme must be the rivalry between these two companies. On show at The National Motor Museum in South Australia were the 1948 first Holden and the first “Ute” from Ford, two vehicles that are central to the narrative of Australian design and innovation. These stories have featured often in many exhibitions and I am sure will continue to impact my research. #australiandesign #ford #holden #fordvsholden #iconic #designhistory #blackboxmelbourne #ianwongcollection #ispyid #monashada #monashindustrial

This weekends project - the iconic “Red Blue chair”. Created by Gerrit Rietveld in 1917 it’s an important object of DIY design history. This one won’t be red and blue, but it will definately have some pop after finish. I must say, it’s way more comfortable that the looks suggest.

Super frutas Almeidas

Annie is a PhD student whose research considers the architecture of palliative care - and she advocates for greater credence to be given to emotions and "unquantifiable" data in the study thereof. Care and share: Informations about Guzzini. Or Harvey Guzzini, iGuzzini? Harvey Guzzini is often considered to be the name of a designer. In fact it is only the name of a lighting company founded by 6 brothers, named Guzzini. For the naming of the company they were inspired by the film "Harvey" from 1950. Harvey Creazioni was first founded by Raimondo Guzzini in 1959. The production was only based on copper plated objects. In 1963 the company started also with the production of lamps. Up to 1976 the company concentrated its production only on lamps and engaged Luigi Massoni, an architect and designer, as Art Director. Over the years the company's name changed several times: from Harvey Creazioni into Harvey Guzzini, Guzzini, iGuzzini. Since 1981 the company is named Illuminazione Guzzini and is today based in Recanati, Italy. #lightingdesign #italiandesign #60s #designhistory #shareandcare #fabiolenci #guzzini #focuslamp #iguzzini #harveyguzzini #acrylic #luigimassoni #berlin #luxparker

#Luigi_Colani (born Lutz Colani 2 August 1928 – 16 September 2019) was a German industrial designer.
His long career began in the 1950s when he designed cars for companies including #Fiat , #Alfa_Romeo , #Lancia , #Volkswagen , and #BMW . In 1957, he dropped his first name Lutz using the name Luigi. In the 1960s, he began designing #furniture, and as of the 1970s, he expanded in numerous areas, ranging from household items such as ballpoint pens and television sets to uniforms and trucks and entire kitchens. A striking grand piano created by Colani, the Pegasus, is manufactured and sold by the #Schimmel #piano company.

His unconventional designs made him famous, not only in design circles, but also to the general public. He received numerous design awards, although his unconventional approach left him largely an outsider from the mainstream of industrial design.
But Colani considered himself more a #theorist than a designer. He lived in Germany and China, and perpetually dressed in a signature white sweater and white pants that had been his look for decades, he was cultivated a #philosophy Where forms which drived from the sensual shapes of #nature —especially his favorites, #fish and #birds. Colani’s stealth #aesthetic might had been viewed as a bit out-there or space-age back in the 1970s, when his ideas seemed better suited to a concept car or a Star Wars set than an assembly line at General Motors. But now, with the world suddenly waking up to notions of fuel economy, -Colani’s stentorian position on #streamlining and fuel seems more relevant than ever.

The original hand drawings for the iconic Helvetica font, preserved in their own bespoke display case, crafted by #studiojonmale in Manchester. A labour of love, according to this very talented, passionate, yet humble designer. It was created alongside his day job of crafting furniture and metalwork, and will play a part in a unique retrospective of the designer #wimcrouwel @stedelijkmuseum in Amsterdam, opening this September 2019. A drawing of each upper and lower case letter are placed back to back between the glass in each of the 26 wooden frames. Красный Октябрь

Настоящий ларец! Увесистая коробка от подарочного набора конфет 70-х, 80-х. Красный Октябрь.
Box for chocolates by Red October factory from 70s, 80s. USSR. .
.

Alright new series! Recently I’ve been trying to get into podcasts because there’s some great stuff out there. That being said, there’s also a lot of stuff in general, so it’s easy to get lost and not know where to start. I’ve put together a list of the best design podcasts (in my opinion) out there that you should definitely follow. Do you follow any of these already? Let me know in the comments!

I spy... Holden assembly plant Elizabeth, South Australia. It would be hard to find any Australian who has not experienced a ride in one of the millions of cars produced at this factory in South Australia. My mum had a blue HD, and a green HR, my uncle Stan had many Holden utes on the farm. My oldest brother Jim had a lime green HK Monaro and an XU-1 Torana. My oldest sister’s first car was a blue HB Torana. Our family had a wrecking yard and I played amongst the wrecks from FX’s to Kingswood’s. I pay my respects to the designers, engineers, production workers and all who made Holden’s for each and every one of us. The Holden logo shown is by designer Richard Ferlazzo - GM Australia Design Director. #australiandesign #holden #designhistory #ispyid #richardferlazzo

The Vivienne Westwood x Vans Anglomania collection debuted today and the Sk8-Hi Platform shown here in the top right hand corner takes inspiration from Westwood’s Pirate boot, which debuted in her and Malcom McLaren’s 1981 Pirate collection.
.
Significantly, the Pirate collection was McLaren and Westwood’s first catwalk show and the collection took inspiration from historical and ethnic dress. The other classic Vans silhouettes used in this collection, aside from the Authentic, were all designed between 1975–78 and were a part of Vans’ Off the Wall franchise, which during the 70s was exclusively marketed for skateboarding and BMX.
.
Part of my job right now at Vans is to research our design process during this period and guess what? There was no design department at the company then! Not unusual for a footwear company back then but highly unusual by today’s standards, this fact is a reminder that the history of vulcanized footwear does not follow the same path as haute couture, which since the mid-19th century has highly elucidated and esteemed the designer’s role.

Credit to from @vitradesignmuseum (@get_regrann) - At the Vitra Schaudepot, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the Vitra Design Museum presents 400 key pieces of modern furniture design from the 1800s until today. The exterior of the Vitra Schaudepot appears as a monolithic volume constructed from bricks, characterised by a completely windowless façade and a simple gable roof. A closer look at the façade reveals stunning details: during its construction, the bricks were hand-broken on site and give the building a lively texture.

Thanks to @ringerinc for this great shot!

Did you know that Roman furniture was the first to see the lion monopodia, and it was later revived by designers such as Thomas Hope during the late eighteenth century. The use of these classical design elements helped establish the 'English Empire' element in Regency furniture.

Here is one of ours, handmade in solid rosewood.

Guys! This is so cool! In Typography we learned about fonts and how they were used in typesetting for the press in the old days. Here I got to see it in action!
Fun Fact (Nerdy Caption Warning):
A font is a specific set of metal pieces in a specific size, weight and style of a typeface. Each font was a matched set, one piece per character (or glyph) and they all matched the overall design of the typeface.
When a frame or plate was made, they used pieces of lead to separate the lines and hold the fonts in place, so the space between lines of type is called leading.

How to use proportioning systems in Product Design?
.
Well, I guess we should start with why, or even should we? My answer would be – not necessarily. But this approach has a lot of benefits
.
We have different restrictions on the process of designing things. Mostly ergonomics, user scenario, and technical restrictions, like the general PCB layout (if we have it) and different manufacturing aspects. Our task as the designers is to make the object functional and beautiful. The beauty of product design lies in its harmony. Definitely, less is more when it is in the right places 😁 .
Taking into account all the limitations we still have a lot of freedom in terms of the details. How rounded the corners need to be?  Where to put the LED indicator? Where to place the logo? We have many questions to answer. I would say that the proportioning definitely helps with this. .
It’s not a secret that I’m a big Golden Ratio fan. I like it because it is built in our DNA. Everything created by nature has the Golden Ratio proportions. So it definitely affects our beauty perception. Why not be using it in Product Design? I love it and I encourage you to try it too!

Next up: Emphasis: Structure, Graphics, and Production. A series of folded brochures emphasizing various types of retail packaging display. From the Bill Bonnell papers.

Connecting Collections: Los Angeles County Museum of Art

This @knollinc Poster designed by Massimo Vignelli has been collected by museums all over the world, including the Vignelli Center for Design Studies @rittigers and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (@lacma). This poster is on view at LACMA as part of their exhibition "Between the Lines: Typography from LACMA's Collections"

Because we are home to the Vignellis’ entire professional archives, we have many unique items such as hand drawn sketches, as well as the final pieces. Researchers often come to our archives if they want to learn the story and process behind the designs. Unfortunately we haven’t found any process sketches related to the creation of this poster, but you can see poster up close in our galleries or in the archives!

Arne Jacobsen, Egg Chair, Fritz Hansen, 1958.
Designed to furnish Arne Jacobsen’s masterpiece of design, the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the Egg Chair is a compact and all-enveloping shell-like chair that serves to isolate the sitter from surrounding noise. It is the first example of cocooning seating in the history of modern furniture, the forerunner of many high-backed systems that populate the contract and office furniture sector. For its 60th anniversary, versions in pink and orange leather with gold plated bases were produced.

Tate Modern

This is so rad. #OlafurEliasson’s ‘Your Uncertain Shadow’ is a highly calculated light and shadow experience using five colored spotlights against a wall. It also bears much resemblance to the graphic design works of Bradbury Thompson in the 1940s. Both were experimenting with color separations, which back then Thompson did with printing plates. #designhistory #contemporaryart #tatemodern #geekalert #latergram
