I questioned myself over and over about posting this pic. I had other perfectly styled and edited pics to share BUT I just couldn’t help myself. I glanced over tonight as she was helping me decorate the tree and I saw pure Christmas joy in her face. ⁣

The 10 year old fake tree with half the lights broken, the handmade ornaments from EVERY year of school, the tree toppers we’ve used since before she was born- they are all her Christmas joy and I’m totally here for it. ⁣

Cheers to the little things that make the holidays magical! ⁣ oh and I have some fun holiday magic to share tomorrow so stay tuned! .

Not my #currentview now, but it was then. This piece of graffiti is so much more positive than the bit next to it telling the world about how Jack “enjoys the company of men”.....like it’s a bad thing.

The first snowfall of the season 🌨 calls for an equally wintry read 🕵🏻‍♀️ next on my TBR, courtesy of @Soho_Press: WINTER GRAVE by Helene Tursten, on sale tomorrow (12/3)!! 🔎🖤

I had SO much fun sharing some recommendations for wintry mysteries in my Stories last night, & between that and today’s snowfall in NYC, I’m totally in the mood to make my next read something chilling & atmospheric. 🙌🏻👌🏻 Enter the new book from Swedish author Helene Tursten: WINTER GRAVE 🕵🏻‍♀️ This is Book 2 in Tursten’s new Embla Nyström series - I read the first book, HUNTING GAME, earlier this year & really enjoyed it!! Direct link to my review of that book in my Stories & IG profile 🤓

The Embla Nyström series is a slow-burning Nordic crime series featuring a compelling protagonist: a young woman who is both a police officer AND a prize-winning fighter in Sweden. Embla is a fantastic character - she’s tough yet relatable, the kind of protagonist who is both admirable in her smarts and deeply down to earth, too. The first book in this series had a classic crime/locked room mystery feel to it, and was definitely a much lighter version of traditional Scandinavian crime fiction - it had a chilling atmosphere but was much more about procedure than scares. If that sounds like your kind of read, take note of this series! 🕵🏻‍♀️

In WINTER GRAVE, the disappearance of a little girl two weeks before Christmas sets a small town into a tailspin of suspicion, and sets Detective Inspector Embla Nyström on a race to catch a killer before the small town takes matters into their own hands. 😳 But as Embla hunts for the missing child, she can’t help but think of the case that has been haunting her for years: the disappearance of her childhood best friend. Could the incidents be linked? With the passing of each dark winter day, desperation mounts, and the parents of the missing child will stop at nothing to get answers... •
What are your thoughts & feelings on mysteries that are a bit less gory/dark?! As we know, I’m a huge fan of super dark & creepy thrillers - but every so often it can be nice to get a change of pace! 🖤

Oslo all dressed up for Christmas ✨ 10/10 recommend visiting this gorgeous place in the holiday season ☺️🙌🏻 •
Day 2 in Oslo has been (unsurprisingly 😉) another incredible day. My personal favorite way to experience a place is just to WALK anywhere & everywhere, so today I did exactly that - even though it was chilly & rainy. ☔️ Today’s walk was focused on visiting a whole bunch of bookstores, aka an even *better* way to experience the city 😍 I’ll be putting together a blog post highlighting my favorite Oslo bookstores & sharing that with you guys as soon as I’m back in NYC! 📚

I bought 3 new books on my adventures today (told myself I was just going to buy 1 today but..... here we are 🤷🏻‍♀️ & I have no regrets 🤗) I’ll share all the books I bought with you guys tomorrow!! I dug into one this evening & so far so good... a little teaser: it’s a slow-burning story that takes place on a train between Bergen & Oslo. When a snowstorm hits, the train is derailed, and passengers must take refuge in a local hotel. They’re snowed in overnight, & someone in the hotel dies.... 😳😳 this book is basically a crossover between Nordic Noir and an Agatha Christie novel, so you’d better believe I’m excited for it. 😍 I’ll share all the details tomorrow! •
What’s your FAVORITE bookstore to visit, & where in the world is it?! In Oslo, my favorite is @norliuniversitetsgata, and in NYC it’s @themysteriousbookshop 🕵🏻‍♀️

I might be back in NYC but my heart is still in Oslo 🖤 so please enjoy one of the 10472948 leftover pics from my trip I haven’t posted yet 😉 missing these streets so much 🙌🏻

I’m back at work and *almost* finished digging myself out from all the emails I missed while on vacation!! 😂 It’s so good to be back with my work family here in NYC, even if I am seriously missing Oslo at the same time. 🖤🇳🇴 BUT New York is a gorgeous place to be around the holidays too, so I really can’t complain that much!! 😉👍🏻

A silver lining of being back to work after vacation is that it gets me back to my reading schedule! I do 98% of my reading on my subway rides to & from work each day. 🚇 it’s definitely the best way I know to make use of that time! 🤓 Today I’m continuing to read 1222 by Anne Holt, and I’m loving being able to “travel” back to Norway through this read. 🇳🇴 If you’re a fan of classic mysteries, particularly Agatha Christie, I think you’ll really enjoy this book. 👌🏻 It definitely has the feel of a classic crime novel: everything from its locked-room premise to its pacing feels VERY Christie inspired. It’s a fascinating combo of Nordic locale and a story that really does feel more Golden Age detective novel than Nordic Noir. If you’re looking for a Scandinavian crime novel as we typically think of them (as in, a police procedural in the style of Jo Nesbø) I would recommend looking elsewhere - this book won’t satisfy what you’re looking for. (But I’m linking a blog post in my IG profile that will help you find that!!😉) BUT if you’re game for something a bit different - a slow-burn story with classic crime vibes - you might want to check 1222 out! 🕵🏻‍♀️

If you had to pick ONE category of crime novel that’s your fave, what would it be?! Eg. Are you a psychological thriller fan? Classic “whodunnits”? Detective novels? Nordic Noir? 🕵🏻‍♀️🖤 You guys know my fave already!! 😉

I’ve been back in Oslo for 24 hours 🇳🇴 & I simply could not be happier. 🥰 This place just gets more magical every time I visit. 🖤

Have you guys ever been somewhere that’s new to you & it just immediately feels like home? That’s how Oslo has been for me ever since I first visited!🖤 Being back here just puts me at ease & recharges my batteries 🙌🏻 I’ve had an incredible first full day here! Lots of shops/businesses are closed on Sundays in Norway, so I decided to make today a day just to wander around & clear my head of jet lag (😉) & it was the absolute perfect plan for the day. 👌🏻 I walked ALL over this gorgeous city, visiting some favorite spots I’ve been to many times before and exploring new neighborhoods in the city, too. 😍 You can catch a whole bunch of snaps from my day spent wandering around in my Stories! 📷 •
In reading news, I’ve been *trying* to finish up my current read (HOW QUICKLY SHE DISAPPEARS by Raymond Fleischmann) buuut I decided this morning that I’m going to set it aside & come back to it another time. ALL I want to do right now is dig into a Scandinavian crime novel 🕵🏻‍♀️ so that’s exactly what I’m going to do. 😉 I usually try to time my vacation reads so I can read a book set in the location I’m visiting while I’m actually there, and I totally meant to do that this time... but then life got super busy & yours truly slept on her flight yesterday when she should have been reading. 😂 So I’m pressing pause on HOW QUICKLY SHE DISAPPEARS for now and tomorrow it’s Scandi crime time. 😉🕵🏻‍♀️🖤 I’ve got 1 new Scandi crime novel here that I brought with me from NYC buuut I’m thinking I might see if the bookstores here have anything I want to dig into first 🤓 I’ll keep you guys posted on which book I settle on! 🔎

Have you ever been somewhere new that you instantly felt connected to?! If so, where is your “home away from home” kind of place? 🌎🌏🌍

My most recent Hannah dress test... and on the rare days I’ve not been wearing her, Diana (the dummy) wears her instead so at least I get to look at her all day, and invariably end up planning other versions I want to make.
⭐️ In exciting news, Hannah is finally with our incredible crew of pattern testers! Release is imminent my friends 😆 make sure you’re following me @byhandlondon for official updates!
(Check linen was a super special treat purchase from @clothshoplondon)

Stopped for a latte ☕️ on the way to work this morning & grabbed a few minutes of reading time to start my week off right 🕵🏻‍♀️ Happy Monday, friends!!

Today on the blog I’m reviewing THE FAMILY UPSTAIRS by Lisa Jewell (@lisajewelluk / @atriabooks) - an excellent psychological suspense novel that blends elements of domestic suspense with Gothic influences, a cult-like mysterious group, & even a bit of international intrigue. 🔎 It *sounds* like a crazy plot, and it’s definitely ambitious, but Lisa Jewell navigates it all beautifully. This story follows a young woman who, after her 25th birthday, learns the identity of her birth parents - AND a learns that she has inherited their old mansion. 🏠 BUT the house has a dark history: years prior, it was the site of a bizarre tragedy. A group of people were found dead in the home, their bodies displayed in what appeared to be a cult-like group suicide. 😳 What happened to these people? And what about the children who were thought to be living in the house at the time, but disappeared without a trace? 😱

If you love dark psychological suspense + intricate plots + stories with cult vibes + plenty of family secrets and drama, this book 100% belongs on your TBR. 🔎 THE FAMILY UPSTAIRS is available now & comes highly recommended by yours truly!! 🕵🏻‍♀️ You can catch my full review linked in my Stories & in my profile! 🤓

Who here is a Lisa Jewell fan?! Who has read THE FAMILY UPSTAIRS? No spoilers please (for those here who might not have read her newest book yet) but tell us what you love about Lisa’s work!!❤️

When in Norway, buying Norwegian crime novels is a must. 🕵🏻‍♀️🇳🇴 Now here’s hoping I can fit these guys in my luggage 😉

Friends, I am truly so happy in Oslo. 🖤 I’ve been having such a wonderful week here & thankfully it’s not over yet - though tomorrow I *am* heading somewhere a bit different & very exciting, and I can’t wait to take you along with me on this mini-adventure! 😉 I’m also bringing my current read, 1222 by Anne Holt, along with me tomorrow 🕵🏻‍♀️ it’s one of the books I bought on my day of bookstore exploring, & I wanted to share a little rundown of my book purchases so far with you all here! 👇🏻

🔎 1222 by Anne Holt: Think of this book as a cross between Nordic Noir & Agatha Christie. 🙌🏻 When a train traveling from Oslo to Bergen is derailed by a terrible snowstorm, its passengers are forced to abandon the train and take shelter in an old mountain hotel. Before dawn breaks, one of them will be murdered. 😳
🔎 THE KATHARINA CODE by Jørn Lier Horst: my personal most-anticipated book in this stack!! Each year, on the anniversary of Katharina Haugen’s disappearance, Chief Inspector William Wisting rereads her files, searching for the answer he could never find. This year is going to be different. Another woman is missing, and so is Katharina’s husband. 😱
🔎 THE WHISPERER by Karin Fossum: Jo Nesbø calls this author “A truly great writer and explorer of the human mind” sooo you know I’m sold 😉 in this book, a shy, quiet woman who lives a predictable life has her world shattered when she receives a threatening letter. The police are called to investigate. Is this unassuming woman hiding a dark secret? 😳

Which of these books looks up your alley?! I’m honestly so excited to devour them all 🕵🏻‍♀️ & will report back on them!!!🤓
