"Hi. I'm Tumi. You know you can look at me right... Hey, look at me. What's your name?" Tumi demanded. "My name is Thabi..." She said shyly.

I took this photograph of Little Bee-eater (Merops pusillus) last year when I still lived in Durban and saw these birds fairly regularly in the myriad of wonderful little reserves tucked away in the that city's suburbs. Little Bee-eaters occur widely in Woodlands south of the Sahara desert up to the northern parts of South Africa. They are tiny little hunters - weighing merely 14 g - of mainly bees and wasps but also of other insects, including dragonflies. #birds #birdsofinstagram #birdsofsouthafrica #birds_of_ig #birder #birders #birdwatching #birdwatchers #birdphotography #nature #naturephotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #natgeo #natgeobirds #canon #canonsa #canonphotography #best_bird_shots #bird_watchers_daily

Always nice spending time with the elusive ones!! .
.
Male leopard busy with breakfast. We just missed the kill by minutes, but here you can see him diving straight into that impala!! Not wasting any time as he knows soon the scavengers will come along! Lions and hyenas tend to steel leopards kill, usually the leopard will take the kill up in a tree if it can and other times take their chances on the ground!! .

Whispering Waters KZN

This morning got me thinking:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sometimes you have to push yourself beyond your comfort zone to actually start living.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sometimes we get so caught up in the ‘known’ that we tend to think that’s all there is.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s this beauty about exploring the unknown. It allows you to grow & sometimes you end up astounded by how things turned out..⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We got up this morning before dawn (way out of my comfort zone- literally 😉) to watch the sunrise from our canoes. It turned out to be quite cloudy & i was afraid it was all for nothing. We decided to go anyway & it made surprisingly beautiful photo’s. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So happy we put our ‘comfort’ aside for a little something new.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have a great weekend 🌅✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My recent private guided safari to the Kruger National Park with my Australian guest was nothing short of magic. On this day we heard from a friend that there were lions on a certain road. We decided we were going to check them out and see if we could get a few good pictures. On arrival the lions were lying in a river bed and everyone was talking pictures of them. Suddenly i noticed on the road where we were parked big cat spoor. At first i thought it was a lion cub but upon further investigation i noticed this was a big male leopard spoor. I said to Lesley "look what we go here"? We decided to leave the lion sighting and follow the spoor, it was fresh and i felt the big guy was not far. I tracked him on and off the road and noticed a particular pattern, that he was using the road and drainage lines probably because he was hunting or avoiding cars. I followed a couple drainage lines crossing the roads. I lost his tracks and as i was to turn around i I picked up on a familiar shape coming on to the road.

I whispered with excitement "Lesley here is our boy" He was huge and on a mission. He walked a few meters on the road and went off to the river and disappeared. We were sad to loose him so quickly. I looked for him but no avail and remembered his walking pattern before i actually found him. I decided to go and check the next drainage line and BOOM there he was on all his glory walking up from the river bed towards the road again. I smiled and looked at Lesley and we both smiled. We knew this was going to be special. I picked my spot and switched off the car. He walked right up next to us. We could hear him breath. He was big, hes was calm, it was special and it was magic. He crossed the road again and disappeared. We looked at each other, high 5'ed.

A dark Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) basking in a tree. Like most snakes, Black Mambas try and avoid human interaction at all cost, but if cornered they will not hesitate to bite. They have a potent neurotoxic venom and bitten victims need to get to a hospital as soon as possible. Polyvalent antivenom is effective in neutralsing the venom of the Black Mamba.

The iridescence of Greater blue-eared starlings is on clear display as a small flock snatches a drink from a drying pan. Small birds have to be extra vigilant when drinking at exposed waterholes like this, as the danger of predatory species is ever-present. 📸: @jamotyrrell .
