ON VIEW: ANSEL ADAMS in the viewing room @jacksonfineart
now through August 31, 2019
.
Known for capturing essential landscapes along the American west, Ansel Adams established himself as one of the most influential and prolific 20th century photographers. Distinct from his contemporaries, Adams was not preoccupied with capturing shots that perfectly emulate reality; instead, he harnessed his knowledge of photographic theory and employed techniques that highlight the intricate and effervescent character of some of Earth’s greatest sites. His work evokes the same heightened sense of serenity that one feels when experiencing an element of nature for the first time.

Adams was born in San Francisco in 1902. Faced with dyslexia early on, Adams struggled to complete academic tasks and as a result received a limited formal education, completing the equivalent of eighth grade. Of course, little time elapsed before his brilliance broke through in other scapes of life. As a young boy, he developed a passion for artistic endeavors: Adams taught himself to read music and play the piano at twelve years old.

In 1919, Adams joined the Sierra Club––an organization dedicated to environmental preservation––where he was later chosen to be the official event photographer. Along with Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham, Adams was a founding member of f/64, a coalition of 20th century San Francisco photographers with similar styles. Adams also crafted ten volumes of a manual detailing photographic technique. To this day, these books remain the most influential guides to the medium.

“ As above, so below
as within, so without
as the Universe, so the soul “ 🌚
⠀
What we think within ourselves will be expressed and reflected in the World we live in, our environment is a representation of what is going on inside of us 🔮✨

Before/After 🖤

I often get questions about editing, so I thought I’d share a little. ➡️ I edit all my photos in Lightroom. I never use Photoshop to remove or clone out parts of an image because I want the photos to represent true life as it’s unfolding. This makes me work extra hard in camera to make sure your photos are composed in a way that those Photoshop tricks aren’t required. ➡️ Personally, an image looks better in either black and white or colour, rarely both. I will edit in b&w if the light provides really great contrast on the subjects face, helps to focus on the emotion, or if the colour version is a bit distracting. I will edit in colour if helps to separate the subject from the background, the light is soft and pretty and I just like it (I know, I’m so technical 😂) or some aspect of the colour adds to the story the image is telling. ➡️ I’m not sure how to describe my editing style. You often hear people describing their photos as light and airy. I’m NOT a light and airy photographer. Perhaps moody, but a dialed down version. For my photographer friends, I shoot for the highlights. I like my photos to LOOK like a memory, like if you were thinking back to a moment, how would that look in your mind. So if it was a cloudy day, you won’t see me editing in a sunny sky. I like to bring out the things you wouldn’t otherwise notice without it looking over manipulated.
Do you have any editing questions for me? Ask them below! 📷 Photo from an afternoon with The Arezes Family

Happy #WorldPhotographyDay! We are celebrating with the iconic Moon and Half Dome, 1960 by Ansel Adams.
"I go out into the world with my camera and come across something that excites me emotionally, spiritually or aesthetically. I see the image in my mind’s eye. I make the photograph and print it as the equivalent of what I saw and felt." - Ansel Adams

We have this print available as a gelatin silver Special Edition Photograph - hand made from Ansel Adams' original negative by Ansel Adams previous assistant Alan Ross since 1975.

The flatiron building initially received widespread skepticism when construction began with many residents believing that the triangle shape combined with the height would cause the building to fall down.

It hasn't so far so I imagine they are pissed.
