Occlusion Training Biceps - Build Bigger Biceps with BFR Training
When someone mentions arm muscles, it’s natural for most people to think of the biceps. That’s because the biceps are front and center when wearing a short sleeve (Or long sleeve) shirt. As a small muscle, they do not require as much work as major muscle groups, especially since they get hit pretty hard during a back workout.

A biceps pump is probably the most satisfying feeling to any serious lifter, especially because it is usually the one muscle that you can really appreciate when you look in the mirror (depending on your workout clothing) after an intense set of bicep curls.

If there’s one training method that will give you skin splitting pumps, it would be Occlusion training.

How To Wrap The Biceps For Occlusion Training

You should wrap them (Bands, cuffs, wraps) around your upper arm below the shoulder and above the bicep (It’s ok if the band touches the bicep)
If using a wrap, make sure to overlap
Make sure the pressure is about a 7/10 in perceived tightness (not to be confused with numbers on the band itself)
Your upper arms should not feel numb or tingly. If they are, loosen up a bit so that your device is still tight enough to restrict blood flow.

Now For The Biceps Workout

You’ve applied enough pressure around your upper arms so now you’re ready to get that blood into the muscle and keep it there (a little longer than you normally would during a workout)

Since light weight is key, perform the exercises with 20% of your 1-rep max 
Use about 2-3 exercises for your workout with a rep range between 8-30 (you can do something like 30-25-15-8). The goal is to train to volitional fatigue, so sometimes will you have to do more or less reps than this.
Good exercises for the biceps are dumbbell curls, standing barbell curls and cable curls
Focus on the concentric contractions (BFR benefits more from the concentric focus, whereas traditional training benefits more from an eccentric focus)

Seriously... We put them through the wringer! Our feet and ankles get brutalized by us on a daily basis. We jam them in some unnatural boxes just because they look good and then we expect them to do their job to the best of their ability! That's like putting someone in a body cast and then asking them to still come into work... And yet, more often than not, they're the last place on our bodies we give any attention (and I'm not talking pedicures ladies).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This really is a shame! The moment we begin to lose the mobility of our foot and ankle a very important locomotive chain begins to breakdown. We lose the ability to truly connect with the very ground we walk on. It may not sound all that bad, but if you're anything like me and enjoy knees and hips that function properly, it's a pretty big deal! The foot and ankle are designed to generate torsion (rotational torque) helping create stability at the knee and hip. No torque at the foot and ankle equals no torque from the primary drivers of the hips. No torque at the hips equates to the inability to properly align and stabilize the spinal column. And finally,  poor core stability equates to locked up motor patterns and limited mobility overall. Did you follow me on all that?!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hit another milestone after 3 months of constantly training in an environment that accumulates and accelerates lactic acid!

A small milestone for most, but an important one for me as I've been chasing this number since I was 15!! So in the arena of setting goals and pushing until failure.

Never thought I'd be able to hit 219 push-ups in one set.

This @votwear is seriously getting out of hand..! #bfrTraining #bfrbands #bfrwear

Who doesn’t want booty growth?!? 🍑 BFR blood flow restricted exercises can produce some pretty impressive results. The idea is that by restricting blood flow to your muscle you can stimulate muscle growth using lighter weights and sparring your joints. After lifting heavy and incurring some lower back pain and also having had knee pain due to strenuous activities throughout the years, I started to research this technique that has been around for awhile and  not some new fad. This is the 3rd post in a mini-series on the different ways to utilize Blood Flow Restriction (BFR). This is still relevant as false dichotomies in BFR still thrives, i.e. safe vs. unsafe or effectful vs ineffectfual.

When measuring Limp Occlusion Pressure (LOP) with a cuff like Fit Cuffs in the Lower body, of 100 randomly picked people 90 % will be in the range of 150-250 mmhg. Then just add limb circumference, which alone explains about 70 % of the variance in LOP (1), we get into the sweet spot of 40-80 % LOP using a simple algorithm. These past five months have been really trying. Sleepless nights, frustration, tears, stress, nightmares, etc. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. BFR -blood flow restriction 
So for the past month or two I’ve been playing around with BFR bands. For those of you who don’t know what bfr bands are  I’ll break it down in terms I can even understand. You apply the bands at the top of your thighs or above your biceps and below the shoulders. The bands should be loose enough to freely allow blood to the muscles but slightly tight enough to slow the blood from exiting your limbs. Basically this causes the lactic acid to hangout longer and by using low weight and high reps you can get a similar effect of lifting much heavier. Now again as I said in my first video I don’t claim to be certified in any way and I am not saying everyone should do this. Basically I felt I had plateaued and did some research into how to get some different results. There is a ton of bro science and real science and honestly it comes across as very controversial mainly for people using it wrong and going way to tight. The key is that it’s 100x better to go looser than too tight. The studies I read literally show the same results at the optimum tightness as well as looser, but show no benefit to going tighter. I have really noticed a burn and positive difference that I haven’t felt in awhile. I use these at the end of my workout once or twice a week if I’m still feeling like I have more in the tank.

This is because by restricting the veins and not the arteries, blood can keep pooling into the working muscle and stays trapped there, making it feel like a balloon filled with water to maximum capacity.

By bringing all that blood to the muscles without letting it leave, two main things happen:

firstly, you get a crazy pump as your muscles swell and feel super-sized due to the cellular swelling which shocks the muscles into growth, and secondly, it burns like hell.

This is because your muscles quickly become oxygen deprived, creating a lot of metabolic stress – one of the three major mechanisms of muscle growth.

As a result, using BFR during resistance training is said to not only increase strength but also boost muscle size, achieving the volume you’d expect from normal training of 12 weeks, in only four.

Now you can probably understand why this technique is really taking off.

I’ve been playing around with BFR training for a while on my lagging body part, my arms 💪🏻

BFR aims to restrict venous return while still allowing arterial flow. By restricting the veins and not the arteries, blood can keep pooling into a working muscle and it stays trapped. In other words, BFR aims to get a bigger and better ‘pump’
.
BFR helps muscles grow by making muscle cells become so full of fluid that they must grow (or burst), the low oxygen level in a muscle during the accumulation of blood forces your body to recruit the larger fast-twitch fibers, which can stimulate more muscle growth and when oxygen is low in the muscle, lactic acid rapidly accumulates, and many studies show that lactic acid can increase protein synthesis
.
I end a workout with a very light weight, do 30 reps, rest for 15sec, 10 reps, 15sec rest, 10 reps 15sec rest and one last set of 10. This has been researched to be the most effective method
.
I don’t recommend this for new or inexperienced trainers, but everything I’ve researched has pointed it out to be safe, and does benefit hypertrophy
.

I stumbled upon BFR a few years ago and I still get the same looks from bystanders in the gym. It is a wonderful supplement to  nearly anyone’s training and I’m surprised more gym rats don’t use it. Unlike fasted cardio, this type of training has benefits supported by science 🧬🧪🔬

1. ALWAYS!!!!!!! wrap around the upper arms or upper legs
2. Make sure the cuffs are tight enough to make it difficult to get a finger beneath but not so tight that your limbs become tingly 
3. Choose a weight that you can do for about 20-30 reps for your 1st set
4. Follow your 1st set with 2-4 more sets of >15 reps and try to keep intra-set rest below 30 seconds (if you’re super deranged, take the last set to failure)
5. Feel the burn, embrace the burn 🔥🔥🔥

BFR bands are amazingly effective for causing muscle hypertrophy in just a short period of time (15-30mins). I’ve been using these regularly for the past week and they have been the best investment into my workout routine in a while and are very affordable.

You can read about them online, I know @bodybuildingcom has some articles about them, but in short... When you strap them on your arms/legs, they allow blood to pump in, but restrict the flow out. The point is to get a crazy pump. YES they work. YES they are safe. Read about them online, watch YouTube vids, and try them if you want, or don’t🤷🏼‍♂️

If you do try them, don’t leave them on your whole workout. Put them on for about 10 min, and hit up some supersets with high reps to get the blood going. Don’t try to max out while you’re wearing them. That’s not the point. LIGHT WEIGHT😎
