Looking for the perfect baby shower gift? What could be better than the gift of sleep. Dr Singh child psychiatrist reviewed my book. Here is what she had to say about it. “Ms. Evelyn Burdon’s book The Cheshire Baby Whisperer™ Ultimate sleep guide for babies & toddlers has been written following Ms. Burdon’s years of experience and training in the NHS.
She begins with helping the reader understand the physiology of sleep, understanding the baby’s needs the psychological aspects underpinning good sleep and the need for creating a “multi-sensory“ environment for positive association with sleep. The book goes on to help with developing parenting styles and appropriate parental expectations during the different ages with practical and manageable advice. She has followed national guidelines from NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) as available at time of publication.
A highly recommended book by many parents I feel this comprehensive book is a must have. A book that is more than for just sleep providing guidance for most issues faced by a new parent. I am sure it will be a helpful bedside companion for years to come.”

Help your child with their anxiety and speak in terms they will understand:

Instead of telling them how long you’ll be gone.
Tell them when you will be back in regards to their schedule.
After nap time, before bed, after dinner, before bath time, and so on.

On arriving at your destination it is exciting and the children want to explore. Try to get into local time as quickly as possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✈️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Holiday is a time for fun AND rest so don’t over do it! How about having 1 day exploring and then next day a quieter day. If naps go out the window one day the next day may be needed to catch up and reset. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✈️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Explain to the family the children need to have down time and so do you! It’s not fair on the children to miss their naps too many days in a row and it may impact on night sleep. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Night #4 has me getting really honest about a parenting moment I had that involved a little sleep and some loss of patience! Also, please share this video! I know I’m not the only parent who isn’t getting enough sleep, but unfortunately so many parents have shame around this topic and don’t like to admit the lack of sleep they get, or that their kids aren’t the best sleepers. You never know which parent you can help get a great nights worth of sleep by sharing! #parenting #parentingwithconsciousness #parents #children #baby #babies #babysleeping #babysleep #babysleeptips #toddler #toddlersleep #sleep #parentingishard #parentingcoach #parentinghacks #parentinghack #momlife #dadlife #lamoms #pediatricsleepconsultant #sleephelp

{Naps} If you Google, “how many naps should my baby have in a day?” You will get countless charts detailing your baby’s sleep needs. The thing to remember is that while these are useful guidelines, every child is UNIQUE! Some may drop naps earlier and others will hold on much longer. This is a good starting off point but it’s always important to follow your own baby’s signs of tiredness. More on that coming up!

Who’s traveling this holiday season? What does your set up look like?

We had our first family vacation about two months ago and I’ll admit, I was nervous. This was the first time my girl would be sleeping away from home for an extended period of time. I was used to her sleeping through the night and I was worried all my hard work in teaching her independent sleep would go down the drain. Man, was I wrong!! We set her Pack n Play up under the Slumber Pod and she slept just like she did at home!
I highly recommend the Slumber Pod for travel after this experience. I love it because it will 100% black out the space, there are still air vents for ventilation and there’s even a pocket for your video monitor! Even though the Slumber Pod is a little more expensive then some similar systems, I think it’s well worth it. You’ll be able to use this product for years, even with a travel toddler cot!

Check out our other travel tips on our website (link in bio)! #baby #babysleeping #babysleep #babysleeptips #travelingwithkids #travelingwithbaby

Are you creating a nursery at the moment or have a pregnant friend? Here's a quick checklist to make sure your baby's room is a sleep sanctuary.

A comfy crib, blackout curtains (so you can make his room totally dark at night), a red light lamp (so you don't need to disturb his night routine with blue light and can switch on the red light during night feedings) and a white noise machine (please only use it at night though). The Kulala Baby Sleep Lamp will be available early 2020.

Baby is finally here and home! So, now what?! We get asked a lot what night one looks like. The honest answer is, it looks different for everyone! That’s why you have one friend who says she was up all night, while another says her baby slept through the night. Here are a few key guidelines to help you shape that precious first night at home:

You’ll want to set the tone for sleep so keep your sleeping space dim-dark all night.

Just because baby is awake, it doesn’t mean you have to entertain them. If they’re happy taking it easy in their sleep space, let them be. If they require snuggles, eating, or a diaper change keep interaction to a minimum in regards to speaking and eye contact.

Start as you intend to go on. If you want your baby to sleep in a bassinet in your bed, then *try* to start with them in the bassinet next to your bed. The key word? *Try*! Be flexible! You’re all new to this so just do your best and do what makes sense for you.

Have a friend with a baby on the way? Be sure to send them this post or tag them below so they have scoop!

Sweet dreams, mamas. ♥️

CRIB HACK❗️❗️❗️ When we initially brought baby A home, we were using the @halosleep bassinet until the little one turned 3 months. He quickly outgrew the bassinet and we had to transition him into a crib. The crib was a tad bit too big for him and he kept rolling towards the wooden railing. He’d end up either bumping his head or kept getting stuck in the gap between the wooden railing and the mattress. This hack came in very handy then. A POOL NOODLE - yes, you heard it right! I brought a pool noodle from Walmart and trimmed it to fit the length of the mattress. I then slipped it from underneath the crib sheet. This also prevented the little man’s hand and feet from getting stuck in the railing. The noodle stays put in the corner and doesn’t pose any risk to the baby. .
Do you have any mom hacks that made your #momlife even a tad bit easier? If so, please share them in the comments below 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 .

For many parents, sleep training is a dirty word that invokes guilt. But, if we replace the word “training” with “teaching” its a lot more accurate & suddenly doesn’t sound so bad.

Children learn how to sleep from their parents, whether it is intentional or not.
Does baby need to be rocked, fed, or held to fall asleep? These strategies are taught by us, the parents, and become habits for our children.
Your baby can learn to fall sleep on her own, without being held, rocked, or fed. She’s just waiting for you to teach her how!

A family tradition of ours to share with yours :

10 years ago (!!) I made this Activity Advent Calendar from a Pinterest post. Paper shopping bags, images from magazines and patterned ribbon held together by duct tape and Elmer’s. 😂 It’s still going strong! And is, by far, my children’s favorite part of pre-Christmas (we celebrate Christmas and solstice, but it can be adapted)

What activities you ask? •invite a friend over for hot chocolate
• sing Christmas carols on the way to school
•take a walk in the snow and look for animal tracks 🐇

Some days there’s a small treat instead, like holiday themed stickers, but we make time to do simple, sweet things together in the midst of the holiday hustle.
ABCs of Sleep is here to support you being a connected and calm parent this holiday season and always.

Wondering whether sleep training could work for your family?

Kerri writes: “My daughter was getting up multiple times a night and not able to put herself back to sleep without rocking or a bottle. Joan gave me a written plan that was easy to follow. I was so surprised on how fast it worked. The first night my daughter cried for 15 min and each night got less and less. By night 3 she was sleeping through the night and so was I! Joan was always available to email or talk. She was very invested in making sure the plan was a success. I recommend her to anyone who is looking to sleep train!" 💤

Children typically do a little better being left with a grandparent or family friend who they have already spent some time with, and who they have grown to trust a little, so call in a favour, put some wine in the fridge, and plan to spend at least an hour away from the house for the first few attempts.

But if you have a toddler and have already left your child I am sure you have attempted to distract them and then sneak out the door without saying goodbye. After all, it’s the goodbye that provokes the reaction, right?
But even if it provokes some tears, it’s important for your child to understand that you’re going to leave sometimes, and that you’ll be back when you say you will. Although it is hard it is an important lesson and development milestone.

😴 Sleep tip #7: Take Five.
. 🧘🏻‍♀️ 👶🏻 🛁🛌🧸 Before you put your child to bed (for naps or at night time), make sure the five-minute period before they are put to bed is very calm and relaxing.
. 🚫📱📺🤸‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️No throwing your toddler in the air… or watching TV… or tickle fights… in the five minutes immediately before bed.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I totally encourage tickle fights and any other kinds of rowdy fun you can think of with your children. It’s fun for the whole family! Just NOT in the five minutes before bed. (Right after waking up is a great time to play!).

As you find your way through your parenting journey (no matter how many times you have done it), you will find there are numerous routes and roads to take with how you parent your children. Particularly as a first time parent, you must slow down and take your time in the early days, finding a route and approach that feels right for you and is best suited to your instincts and what they are telling you to do. Unsolicited advice will come to you a plenty, but stay firm in holding on to what you believe and want to do.⁣

The process of choosing a sleep consultant is no different. There are so many different approaches and schools of thought to infant sleep, and ways in which we can support our littles to better, healthier and biologically appropriate sleep. ⁣

So, I want to take this opportunity to talk you through my approach, hopefully helping you in making the decision on whether I am the right fit for you and your family. I am a science girl, I like things to have reason and evidence, but I also believe firmly in balance. I take a balanced, middle-ground approach to sleep; neither being completely baby-led or solely parent focused (i.e a strict routine with CIO). I believe in setting loving boundaries from early on, whilst respecting and attending to our children’s needs. I do firmly believe our children need sleep (so much more than you think they need!) and I do not advocate for chronic sleep deprivation as a badge of honour that must be proudly worn as part of early parenthood. I know there are many ways in which better sleep can be achieved, and for those that I align with, I hope I can continue to help you. ⁣

In my posts and IGTVs I talk very honestly about my approach to certain sleep situations and have also provided a detailed video on my chosen settling technique, as I know this is what all parents want to know when making the decision on whether to sleep train their littles. ⁣

I may not be the right sleep consultant for you, and that is perfectly okay ❤️. #sleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #babysleeptips #sleeptraining #fourmonthsleepregression #mumandbaby #gentlesleeptraining

ARE YOU THE SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE? ⁣

No, of course not. So why do we expect our little ones to be the same? 🤔⁣

I often ask my families not to share the techniques I use with them. Not because they are a secret but because what has worked for them might not necessarily work for you 🤫⁣

One of the main reasons sleep coaching doesn’t work for people is that they are using a strategy that isn’t designed specifically for them and bespoke to them. ⁣

Which is why cheap “one size fits all” plans DON’T WORK, because your little ones are not ROBOTS 🤖 ⁣

👉🏻 If you want a sleep plan designed specifically for you and your little one, with their best interests at heart, then get in touch NOW 😴⁣

SLEEP TRAINING MYTHS PART 2:

❤️ “IT’S THE RIGHT THING TO DO” - I have heard this said, and actually said it myself - "it was really hard, but you just have to do it". But how can something that doesn't feel right be the right thing to do? As Dr. Neufeld says "when it comes to children, our own natural intuition is the answer." We trust our instincts when it comes to making monumental decisions in our lives. Why then do we push this same instinct away when it comes to our own child?

❤️ SLEEP TRAINING WORKS - Full extinction can work for some babies to stop signalling. As mentioned earlier, it's not that the baby self-soothed, it's that the baby shut down as a survival mechanism. Sleep training only addresses the behaviour but does not look at the root of the sleep challenge. Babies who have been sleep trained still go through all the normal sleep challenges such as teething, new developmental milestone, illness. Therefore, some babies will still signal and need parental help through these challenges, again.

❤️ YOU SHOULDN’T ROCK, SWAY, WALK YOUR BABY TO SLEEP - This isn't true. Motion is good for brain development. Light and sleep pressure are the two factors that dictate whether you'll get some sleep. Sitting in the dark room for a long period of time trying to get a nap in won't help. But going for a walk will not only highly likely put your baby to sleep for a nap but also give you some fresh air and exercise to improve her mood.

⭐️ The Baby-Led Sleep approach places great emphasis on maternal mental health as if mom feels good, baby feels good. We believe that if something makes mom feel good, it should be something that is happening as often as possible. ⭐️

Know that you can get more sleep without sleep training. Send me a DM for more info or apply for a free 30 min consultation with me by clicking Book in my bio!

MYTHS ABOUT SLEEP TRAINING:

The truth is, I sleep trained my little one. When you're frantically looking around for information, the internet is filled with articles about sleep training and it made me think that I had to do it. But when you know better, you do better. Below are some myths that the sleep industry tells us:

❤️BABIES CAN BE TRAINED TO SLEEP -
What they’re telling us is that if your baby is not trained, then they cannot or will not go to sleep. But sleep is a biological function. Just like how you need to go to the bathroom, and eat, you also need to sleep. All of which our babies have been doing since they're inside the womb.

❤️ BABIES NEED TO LEARN TO SELF-SOOTHE - A baby has six arousal states. Being asleep, drowsy, hypo-aroused, calmly focused and alert, hyperaroused, then flooded. The only way to down-regulate a baby from the hyperaroused state is with parental support and contact. The baby can't do this on his own. If he doesn't down-regulate from being hyperaroused, he gets flooded, at which point he is burning so much energy that he may fall asleep. Not because he self-soothed but because he was flooded.

❤️ IT’S IMPORTANT FOR BABIES TO SLEEP INDEPENDENTLY- “Twentieth- century Western culture has stressed independence. Many experts assert that if an infant doesn’t learn to be independent quickly, it will never learn. Yet, attachment studies have shown that infants who receive strong responses from caregivers request holding less often and appear to enjoy holding more. Attached children also become more responsive to parental requests, a kind of ‘dependence’ that is preferable.” Dr. Linda Palmer, The Baby Bond.

If you have started to notice your child waking up around the 3-4am zone, make sure you check that they’re warm enough! That time is when our body temperature naturally drops to its lowest, making a nice, cool room at bedtime feel too cold to get back to sleep! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This time of year, unless you blast the heat, you might need to use a fleece pj AND a fleece or heavily weighted swaddle/sleep sack. Just the other night, I changed Junalie into a warmer sleep sack (3.5 Tog rating) at 3am after she was fussing at an odd time, and she went right back to sleep. Swipe to check out @slumbersackus’s helpful Tog rating chart. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #babysleep #babysleeping #babysleepingbag #babysleepsuit #babysleeps #sleepsack #swaddle #babysleepconsultant #babysleepsuits #babysleepexpert #babysleephelp #babysleeptips #babysleeper #babysleepingbags #babysleepsite #babysleeptraining #babysleepwear #babysleepbooks #BabySleepsThrough #babysleepschedule #babysleepsack #BabySleepIdeas #BabySleepRoutine #babysleeprevolution #babyitscoldoutside #babysleepconsultantusa #babysleepconsultantsleeptips

Bedtime Routine-

Having a predictable and consistent bedtime routine is so important to prepare children for sleep. You should start a bedtime routine from day 1. It helps signal the brain that it is time for sleep.
Example of our bedtime routine.... .
🌟 Bath
🌟 Pj’s
🌟 Books
🌟 Song
🌟 Prayer
🌟 Bed
.

Your bedtime routine should be in between 20-30 mins. It should also be in calm state with dim lighting. .

My little lady LOVES anything Daniel Tiger, so we are on a Daniel Tiger story kick right now, What are some of your kids favorite books? 📚

😴 Sleep tip #6: Try The “1, 2, 3” System.
. 🙇🏻‍♂️ When your child wakes up during the night – or during a nap – and starts crying or fussing, try to wait a specific length of time before going in to check on them.
. ⏰ The first day you try this, I recommend waiting exactly one minute before going in to check on your child. On the second day, wait two minutes. Three minutes on the third day, and so on.
Why?
Well, everyone (babies and toddlers included) will wake up briefly at the end of each 45-minute “sleep cycle.”
Most adults wake so briefly that we don’t even remember it in the morning. But children who haven’t learned to fall asleep independently need a little longer.
This “1, 2, 3” System gives your child the opportunity to get themselves back to sleep – without your help. And once your child has learned this skill, you’re home free! 👶🏼💤

I became passionate about sleep when I saw how much our own lives changed once we taught our boy to sleep. We didn’t even know how bad it was until we were through it and looked back. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Overweight, exhausted, irritable, fighting easily, no motivation.... just some of the things that come to mind when I think about how things were in our state of sleep deprivation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am not exaggerating when I say EVERYTHING changed for us once we were all sleeping well! Everything! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Which is why I’m here ... working with families to help them through the darkness of exhaustion. Parenthood is really hard but it’s also really beautiful! But when you are too tired to comb your hair, it can be impossible to see the beauty in things at times!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If things feel like they could be better with a little sleep, let me help you! What do you have to lose?

Double tap if you agree that, “The days are long, but the years are short!” Or if you just like this photo it’s ok to like it too 😉

To prove that this statement is TRUE, pictured are my beautiful twin babies (now 11) each holding their going home sleeper from the hospital. I am not kidding - it seems like yesterday they wore these soft pink and blue outfits from @carters. They grew up in a blink of an eye.⁣

When the twins were young the days seemed to drag and feel like that movie “Groundhog Day.” It was so hard to go from doing whatever I wanted when I wanted, to being a caregiver of two babies. I obviously knew being a mom was the most important job ever. My priorities, focus and purpose in life changed on July 28, 2008. My family was 3,000 miles away, and the twins’ dad was traveling with work to support our family financially. Luckily I had an amazing nanny @lifewithpaisleygrace and a Twin Mom Support Group to support me when times got tough. ⁣

If this story sounds familiar just know that you aren’t alone Mama. Time does go fast; however, it’s important to ensure that you TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF and get support along the way too. The one thing that truly helped was putting my twins on a predictable sleep schedule. I was able to plan playdates and outings around that schedule, and they slept through the night which gave myself some “ME” time at night to recharge before doing it all over again the next day. ⁣

If you need help with your baby’s sleep please reach out. Let’s work together so that you can carve out some “ME” time at night or during naps so that your days don’t feel so long anymore. ⁣

DM me, or tag a mom friend that can relate and may find my services helpful.

This just gives you an idea of sleep times for baby. As always, not every baby will follow this chart, or even a routine for that matter! (If they do consider yourself lucky 😂👌🏼) What kind of sleep schedule do you have your baby on? Do they follow this chart? Tag a friend who could use this.

I tend to find that most of the heartache we have around infant and child sleep is that our expectations, especially going into parenting, are so skewed. Thanks to incorrect information all across the internet and in printed media and sadly some of the advice given by friends, family and health professionals. .
.
If we had realistic expectations I really believe that things would be easier. We would create a society to support new parents - in short, society would change, rather than expecting all the changing to be done by the children. That would be altogether more successful and a lot kinder to babies and to parents.

✨IT DOES GET BETTER
.
I was reflecting the other day as I ran an errand with my son kinda late (nearing bedtime). He sat in his car seat so quietly I thought he was sleeping. When we got home and I went to get him (fully anticipating he was asleep) he was flipping the pages of a book and looked up at me “mommy I reading.” My heart melted seeing my sweet, sweet boy.
.
.
I looked over at my husband and I said, “do you remember when he would scream in the car nonstop?” In those days—it felt like it would never end. It wasn’t just the car rides. He was a “micro-napper” he’d nap 25-30 minutes unless he was held. I NEVER imagined he’d [independently] nap for 2-3 hours daily. The point is, I couldn’t see past my circumstances. I couldn’t believe it would get better—but it does. Don’t get me wrong, each stage comes with its own set of challenges, but I’m trying to enjoy the now. I [now] know that whatever tricky part of motherhood I’m in will indeed pass. Each season comes and goes. We will make it, even when it feels impossible.
.

What’s something that’s gotten better for you?

One of the very worst things that you can do as the parent of a baby or a toddler is to compare their sleep to that of other children. It doesn’t matter if you are trying to compare to the sleep of a child of the same age, or different, a sibling, a friend’s child or the child of a stranger on the internet. .
.
ALL children are different. All children have unique sleep patterns and needs. They all need different amounts of sleep, different timings, different ways to settle and different routines. Comparison is utterly pointless and will only make you stressed and anxious....please, don’t do it! Your child is totally unique...they will get there, in their own time and own way!

In keeping with today’s stories takeover, I decided to repost an oldie. 💜⁣⁣
•⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Does your baby wake up the instant you put him down? Sometimes this is caused by the startle reflex. A startle reflex, also known as the Moro reflex, is an automatic behavior that occurs when a baby is startled. Your baby’s arms will shoot open then come together in a great big bear hug. You can just imagine he’s trying to grab hold of you to avoid falling.⁣⁣
•⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
This reflex might be great for a little monkey, but the startle reflex often causes a baby to wake up when you put him in his bed if his head tips backwards as you’re putting him down. ⁣The solution? Lower your baby into the crib or cradle without allowing his head to tip backwards.⁣⁣
