Another usual artifact!
This suspected grooved adz was found by a landowner near Monroe, NC in 1973. It is made out of local meta-argillite and measures approximately 18.5 cm long, 5.2 cm tall, and 3.8 cm wide. It has a deliberately modified area where a handle was likely attached; this distinct “neck” was created using a technique called "pecking and grinding." Unlike a grooved axe, the tapered end of this tool would have been oriented perpendicular to the handle and was not ground smooth. Note the edge damage on the tapered end. An adz is a woodworking tool used to dress, shape, or smooth timber and could have been used prehistorically to make wooden bowls, dugout canoes, or other wooden objects.
This model was constructed by Assistant State Archaeologist David using 46 digital photos and Agisoft Metashape software.

Handful of artifacts found yesterday. Including a JACKS REEF CORNER NOTCHED projectile point from the Late Woodland to Mississippian Period (1500-1000 BP), a hammer stone, a few broken arrowheads, and a pottery fragment. The pottery is MCKEE ISLAND CORD MARKED from the Mississippian Period (1100 - 1550 AD). It is grog tempered and still has fingerprint impressions from the maker on the interior side. #NativeAmerican #Archaeology #InSitu #Paleoindian #Archaic #SavingHistory

Got out to Paint Mines with a friend today. It was lovely out and there almost no people. Just the wind, grass, and the clay.... a good healing day.

Piece of History n.5 - MARBLE PORTRAIT OF EMPEROR AUGUSTUS, 14-37 AD, marble, NY

This over life-size fragment may have been part of a seated statue of the emperor made during the reign of his step-son and successor, Tiberius. Over two hundred and fifty portraits of Augustus, including numerous full-length statues, are known today. In antiquity, there were probably as many bronze statues of the emperor as there were marble ones, but relatively few of the former have survived. Augustus himself claimed to have removed eighty silver statues that had been set up in his honor in the city of Rome alone.
Although Augustus’ features are individualized, he is represented in an idealized, ageless way. When he died in A.D. 14, he was seventy-seven years old, but no portraits of him in old age are known.

📌 Great Temple of Ramses II. Carved out of the mountain on the west bank of the Nile between 1274 and 1244 BC, this imposing main temple of the Abu Simbel complex was as much dedicated to the deified Ramses II himself as to Ra-Horakhty, Amun and Ptah. The four colossal statues of the pharaoh, which front the temple, are like gigantic sentinels watching over the incoming traffic from the south, undoubtedly designed as a warning of the strength of the pharaoh.

Morey

Moray is an archaeological site in Peru approximately 50 kilometres northwest of Cuzco on a high plateau at about 3,500 metres and just west of the village of Maras. The site contains unusual Inca ruins, mostly consisting of several terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is approximately 30 m deep. As with many other Inca sites, it also has an irrigation system. (Credit @_.vegvisir._ )

📌 Trojan horse, huge hollow wooden horse constructed by the Greeks to gain entrance into Troy during the Trojan War. The horse was built by Epeius, a master carpenter and pugilist. The Greeks, pretending to desert the war, sailed to the nearby island of Tenedos, leaving behind Sinon, who persuaded the Trojans that the horse was an offering to Athena (goddess of war) that would make Troy impregnable. Despite the warnings of Laocoön and Cassandra, the horse was taken inside the city gates.
_

That night Greek warriors emerged from it and opened the gates to let in the returned Greek army. The story is told at length in Book II of the Aeneid and is touched upon in the Odyssey. The term Trojan horse has come to refer to subversion introduced from the outside. Beginning in the late 20th century, the name “Trojan horse” was applied to deceptively benign computer codes that seem like legitimate applications but are written to damage or disrupt a computer’s programming or to steal personal information.

📌 The archaeological site of the so-called Midas City is situated in the Eskişehir region in Central Anatolia, near the village of Yazılıkaya (which in Turkish means something like "rock inscription"). With a few exceptions, most of the Phrygian rock-cut monuments for which the site has become famous, date back to the sixth century BCE.

Teotihuacan Pyramids

Teotihuacan is an ancient Mesoamerican city located in a sub-valley of the Valley of Mexico about 40 kilometres (25 mi) northeast of modern-day Mexico City.
Teotihuacan is known today as the site of many of the most architecturally significant Mesoamerican pyramids built in the pre-Columbian Americas.
After the collapse of Teotihuacan, central Mexico was dominated by the Toltecs of Tula until about 1150 AD. At its zenith, perhaps in the first half of the first millennium AD, Teotihuacan was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, with a population estimated at 125,000 or more, making it at least the sixth largest city in the world during its epoch.
The city covered 8 square miles; 80 to 90 percent of the total population of the valley resided in Teotihuacan. Apart from the pyramids, Teotihuacan is also anthropologically significant for its complex, multi-family residential compounds, the Avenue of the Dead, and its vibrant murals that have been well-preserved.
The city is thought to have been established around 100 BC with major monuments continuously under construction until about 250 AD. The city may have lasted until sometime between the 7th and 8th centuries, but its major monuments were sacked and systematically burned around 550 AD.
The term Teotihuacan (or Teotihuacano) is also used for the whole civilization and cultura complex associated with the site.
The archaeological site cover a total surface area of 83 square kilometres (32 sq mi) and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
