The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.

Bixby Creek Bridge

I often look forward to changing my mind; whether in professional matters, politics, faith, art, family or friendship. Is it not naive to assume we have reached perfection? Whatever your next step it involves change. If next year you are the same as today you are stubbornly static; that is rather boring.
🌉
Big Sur’s iconic Bixby Creek Bridge taken this last new moon. Such beautiful dark skies reveal details of the Milky Way we miss too often. I used some low level lighting to illuminate the bridge in this long exposure. Several other photographers shared in the fun before moving on to other areas of this coastal region.
🌌
Be careful here at night; there are too many places to fall!

You might be seeing this image again but in print!🙈👍 I'm so happy to share that it made the back cover of the 2020 Observers Handbook and will be distributed worldwide. This is the 112th year of publication. I'm so grateful and honoured!! Thank you to @jamessedgar9921 the editor and the @royalastronomicalsocietycanada 🇨🇦
Here is the story and details behind the image.
..........
A starry rainbow sky in the Canadian Rockies... I always hope to see a sky filled with colourful aurora but on this night it was colourful red and green airglow. It's not easy to see with your eyes but with a long exposure it will be revealed. Even on the image file it can be so faint that you would think it's just noise or something to ignore. However, with processing you can extract the beautiful colours and patterns. Details: Canon 6d, Sigma 15mm fisheye f2.8 vertical panorama, iso 6400, 30sec 🌟✨

Absolutely insane airglow from the last night 😱 Yes, what you see on this image are not clouds ! That yellow/orangish light comes from the upper atmosphere. I couldn't believe what I saw on the screen of my camera when I took the first image. It seems the atmosphere is pretty active now and it allows us to witness some incredible views. The Milky Way at parts was barely visible ! I hope you'll enjoy the view :)

LMC with green airglow and clouds above the Australian Pyramid.

A single 35mm photograph of the magnificent Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with 47 Tucanae - a bright globular star cluster. 47 Tuc is estimated to hold 10,000 stars which you can see with the naked eye.

I was lucky this night as the sky was full of green airglow dominating the sky. This natural phenomena is excited oxygen atoms and molecules 80 km in the thermosphere. This is one of the reasons it is never completely dark at night.

Cross one off the bucket list. I had seen recent photos of Northern Lights in southern Canada and the ‘wheels began turning’ in my head. I started following the CME/kp predictions, saw a strong kp5-6 opportunity coming up Saturday night, and thought: Hummm, haven’t been to the Canadian Rockies in years, perhaps I should take a chance and go! So I went. I got to Banff area and it was pouring all day with no end in sight, and I wasn’t going to see any stars or Northern Lights with thick clouds. So after touring the tourist spots in my rain gear during the day, I went to stay 50-miles west at lower elevation where there was a chance of fewer clouds. I was wide awake at midnight checking NOAA’s kp reports and it predicted kp5 from midnight to 3 a.m. From the hotel parking lot I saw nothing; no stars, no Northern Lights. I headed out away from city lights in the direction of fewer clouds. Still I saw nothing but clouds and far-off lightning flashes. I took some pics of the lightning bursts and noticed a weird green tint in the images on the north side. The clouds cleared briefly; I got about 20-minutes of clear sky and captured a few shots. The waves of green and purple airglow were moving horizontally… so that’s what the Northern Lights look like! I could see faint colors, but the camera captured it all clearly. Then the cloud cover moved back in and the show was over. It was my first Northern Lights viewing, pretty darn cool. #canada #britishcolumbia #golden #northernlights #bucketlist #cme #kp5 #purple #green #airglow #stars #clouds #hike #remote #pristine #beautiful #pines #mountains #wandering #travel #explore #earth #adventure #nightphotography #astrophotography #naturephotography #landscapephotography #photooftheday #favoriteplanet #pylepix

"Falling"
Perseid Meteor Shower over Mauna Kea, Hawai'i
What you see here is the accumulation of shooting stars (meteors) I captured over a period of 150 minutes on the night of August 12, 2015. This is not a single image but a composite of many, with the meteors aligned, over a wider pano. Do you see the horizontal reddish stroke right next to the meteor that's closest to Mauna Kea's summit? That's actually smoke from the aftermath of that fireball after it exploded.

Late season Milky Way over the coast of Maine. The green color in the sky is from airglow, a natural phenomenon that occurs all over the globe. See the link in the comments below for more details. The orange color on the right side of the image is from light pollution reflecting off the thin cloud cover. Jupiter is the large bright object between the trees in the mid-right of the frame. Saturn is the smaller bright object just above center frame to the left of the Milky Way.⠀

This was taken on the last photography workshop that I taught this year, a little over a week ago. If you’d like to be notified of my future workshops please sign up for my mailing list! I also offer video tutorials that teach how I edit photos like this, and I have a free ebook that covers the basics of what you need to know to get started with landscape astrophotography. See the link in the comments below to get to my website.⠀

Nikon Z 7, FTZ lens adapter with NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8 lens @ 14mm. As with almost all my Milky Way landscape photos this a blend of multiple exposures for low noise and depth of field. The sky is a star stacked result from 20 exposures at f/2.8, ISO 3200, 8 seconds each which were stacked in Starry Landscape Stacker (Mac only but you can use Sequator on Windows) for low noise. The foreground is from two separate 10 minute exposures each at f/2.8 and ISO 1600 with different focus distances to capture more depth of field. The star stacked sky image and the two foreground images were then blended in Photoshop to create a final image with low noise and and good focus from the foreground to the stars.

Alaska and northwestern Canada and the Arctic ice melting due to record heat, NASA
Arctic sea ice is melting at alarming rate this summer because of record high temperatures. The heat had an impact in Greenland differences in geography and climate cause Antarctic sea ice to melt more. For ice to thicken, the ocean must lose heat to the atmosphere.
Atlantic, Eastern Pacific and Western Hemisphere, GOES West. While Category 5 Hurricane transformed to a Category 1, two other storms were brewing — one in the Atlantic, and another in the Eastern Pacific. On September 3, 2019, GOES West view, captured at 1:20 p.m. EDT three storms. Dorian, Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph, is threatening the U.S. mainland as the storm slowly moves to the northwest. Hurricane warnings are in effect in Florida, as well as from South Santee River in South Carolina. Although Dorian isn’t forecast to make landfall along the East Coast, with the storm’s increasing size, any deviation to the left of the track could bring hurricane-force winds to portions of Florida’s east coast, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The storm had formed near the Bahamas and south Florida before becoming a Category 2 hurricane over the Gulf region northwest of Key West. Then, in two days, the hurricane’s winds almost doubled to 175 mph, creating Category 5 Hurricane Katrina— the most intense hurricane in the past 40 years.
By the time Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast, the storm had lost strength but was still able to cause immense damage. Even though the destruction was high, the damage could have been worse if it were not for the forecasts. But no matter how accurate the track forecast, there are still to rebuild a few years now, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been investing in unmanned aircraft and other technologies to increase weather observations designed to improve the accuracy of hurricane forecasting. And drones continue to offer innovative approaches in helping safety agencies. (via @NASA) Behold: The beauty of our home planet! 😍 The orange hue surrounding Earth, known as airglow, diffuse bands of light that stretch 50 to 400 miles into our atmosphere.

Airglow reveals some workings of the upper reaches of our atmosphere. It can help scientists learn about the movement of particles near the interface of Earth and space, including the connections between space weather and Earth weather. Satellites offer one way to study this dynamic zone. Our Ionospheric Connection Explorer satellite that launches early in the morning of Nov. 7 will help scientists understand the physical processes at work where Earth’s atmosphere interacts with near-Earth space.

Nirvana - Back in 2016 when I visited Langza I had this frame in mind and decided I'll execute it for the next trip as it was very cloudy that week. I went back again 4 months later with the plan of shooting and again it was a failure due to overcast weather. Then in 2017 it was all perfect..! I shot the image I had in mind for an year. I was happy with it, until the images started appearing in magazines and calendars where I noticed it wasn't perfect, a closer look showed the faults in the stitches and little trails in stars making it imperfect for large prints. This time I made sure that kinda error had to be eliminated in the final image, and here it is, the whooping 180 Megapixel vertical panorama. Instagram can never do justice to this image due to the crop factor, whatever can be fit, here it is. © @navaneeth_unnikrishnan

The World at Night (TWAN)
📷: Rainbow Airglow over the Azores
Seen on Astronomy Picture of the Day too. Why would the sky glow like a giant repeating rainbow? Airglow. Air glows all of the time, but it is usually hard to see. A disturbance however -- like an approaching storm -- may cause noticeable rippling in the Earth's atmosphere. These gravity waves are oscillations in air analogous to those created when a rock is thrown in calm water. The long-duration exposure nearly along the vertical walls of airglow likely made the undulating structure particularly visible. OK, but where do the colors originate? The deep red glow likely originates from OH molecules about 87-kilometers high, excited by ultraviolet light from the Sun. The orange and green airglow is likely caused by sodium and oxygen atoms slightly higher up. The image was captured during a climb up Mount Pico in the Azores of Portugal. Ground lights originate from the island of Faial in the Atlantic Ocean. A spectacular sky is visible through this banded airglow, with the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy running up the image center, and M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, visible near the top left. Swipe left to see labels.

This long-exposure photograph by ESO Photo Ambassador Petr Horálek captures the hive of activity that is ESO’s La Silla Observatory, the distant glow of roads and settlements in the Chilean Atacama Desert, and the unmissable faint green radiance of airglow (produced by light in Earth’s upper atmosphere).⠀

Directly above them, the dazzling constellation of Orion (The Hunter) dominates the view, as giant clouds and arcs of ionised gas — called emission nebulae, and seen here as red patches — encompass the imagined form of mythological hunter. ⠀

The La Silla Observatory is located in northern Chile at an altitude of 2400 metres. It enjoys some of the darkest night skies on Earth and has been an ESO stronghold since the 1960s. This spectacular shot was captured from the vantage point of ESO’s 3.6-metre telescope — one of the most productive four-metre-class telescopes in the world.⠀

It's not easy to see with your eyes but with a long exposure it will be revealed. Even on the image file it can be so faint that you would think it's just noise or something to ignore. However, with processing you can extract the beautiful colours and patterns.
