Henry Francis (Frank) Leedham
.
Frank signed up to the Navy in January 1913, at the age of 17. He listed his grandmother, Elizabeth Smith of Portugal Street, Ross, as his next of kin. One of 13 children, Frank grew up on the Parramore property, Wetmore at Ross and the Muirhead property, Woodford at Campbell Town where his father, William, worked as a shearer.
.
Frank served on the Cerberus and the Paramatta in the lead up to the outbreak of the war, then as Stoker on HMAS Penguin and Leading Stoker on HMAS Huon.
.
The Huon saw service in the Far East patrol, and then in 1918, in the Mediterranean. After a collision with its sister ship, the Yarra, the Huon was docked in Genoa for repairs.
.
While in Genoa the Spanish influenza pandemic, then sweeping through Europe, struck the ship and five members of the ship's company succumbed to the disease, including Frank. His Navy record rated his character as 'very good' with 'superior' abilities.
.
Frank's story is part of our exhibition: Our Grateful Thanks and Loving Remembrance, a moving and deeply personal exhibition remembering the soldiers whose names are immortalised on the Ross War Memorial.

One picture - three stories. When there is no color, you look at things that matters, because there is no distraction. You can see two little girls in country side, maybe they are sisters or maybe they are best friends, happy, hugging, barefooted. Maybe they just came from pasture or maybe they are on the way to kolkhoz field to weed beets.

Then we add color and the story changes. It is warm and pleasant summer day and both girls are standing in front of berry bushes full of red currants. And they are tasked to pick them in those pillowcases so that delicious jam could be made and stored in barn for the winter. You can even smell freshly moved rye field in background.. And there is third story, which can be told only by those who knows what realy happened. How mother of both girls are calling them and their father to dinner, kisses them on their foreheads and says thank you for picking berries. Perhaps that happened or perhaps happened something else.

Potsdam, Germany

On this day in 1945, the Polish Government-in-Exile, furious & desperate at the fate that was befalling their nation, issued a statement protesting the Potsdam conference ‘on the principles of freedom & equality among the nations of the world’. The statement condemned the ‘secret diplomacy’ of the Big Three, who had not only arrogated to themselves the exclusive right of organizing post-war Europe but did so in appallingly arbitrary fashion, with little regard for the consequences for millions of already impoverished & traumatised citizens.
.
The statement lambasted the promise in the Potsdam communique that ‘those who chose to return… would be given personal & property rights on the same basis as all Polish citizens’, pointing to the mass arrests & deportations that were already underway in Soviet-occupied Poland. It issued a similar reality check on the promise (though not guarantee of elections), pointing out that the Lublin Committee, now recognised as Poland’s legitimate government, was a Communist puppet with no aspirations for anything other than actioning orders from Moscow.
.
The statement relayed with disgust how every border issue had fallen in the Soviets’ favor: the acceptance of the Curzon line, the loss of Lwów & Wilno, their ‘compensation’ with a smaller portion of German territory the Poles didn’t want. Finally, the decision had not contained any mention of the 16 Polish leaders being held by USSR. These men, who had led the Polish Underground through 6 years of war & had suffered & fought for the Allied cause, were now being treated as fascist criminals in Soviet kangaroo courts. ‘These heroes,’ writes one historian, ‘had been abandoned by the West out of political expediency’.
.
The Polish Govt-in-Exile’s proclamation was ultimately futile, but its indignant cry for freedom & justice echoed down the decades through the rest of Poland’s tumultuous 20th century.
.
As a postscript, Churchill tried to argue that Poland’s tragedy was its own fault; that had the Govt-in-Exile bowed to Soviet demands early on, they wouldn’t have been simply bypassed with even bigger ones… A sentiment entirely unworthy of a man with such an esteemed place in history.

Throwback to Hiccup, Fishlegs and Camicazi from the How To Train Your Dragon books of my childhood! :D I pictured them finally resting after the war against Alvin and Furious around a year later somewhere on Tomorrow. Just the three of them hanging out without having to face plot drama and possible death. :)

Becoming is a strange business. It requires us to trade the past for a future unknown. Like a kid on the monkey bars we are required to let go of what we once lunged towards in order to swing forwards again. We must manage the risk of falling anew and measure it against the verdant reward of evolution.

After the unholy rollercoaster of July, August is unfurling a little more gently. Thank the lioness. If you are still braced for the next blow, schooled by a torrid year to date, it may feel counter intuitive to soften your stance but the spaces between require our delicate clement. Leo season this year is less about prowling and roaring and more about stretching out in the sun after so long battling the storms.

We have been clambering up and slip sliding along a very steep learning curve. For all those hard won lessons to settle into their right place in us and for change to actually take hold, they must be allowed to sink in. We must make room and time and space for their integration.

This flies in the face of our terribly modern world, its impatient hunger for mastery. The hubris of fast tracked evolution, box ticked and on to the next, jamming our new intel in with the rest or exploiting its gain before it has taken root or can bear our weight. It is a recipe only for the constant repetition of our lessons because if we don't chew them properly, we will continue to choke.

Digestion takes necessary time and cannot be rushed. Its alchemy provides both the nutrition we crave and the elimination we need, trading who and what we once were for that which we are approaching. A view to becoming that can only be witnessed if we take time to still and sit quietly and peer into our own mirror.

You may not yet recognise all you see shimmering as your own. You may not yet know how to claim it. But you can let your wide eyes drink in the glorious spectrum. Listen to your lionheart hammer a new beat that you will eventually move to. Watch your life take a shape that you can stretch into in full technicolour.

Integration is how to knit your evolution into you. Let it takes its sweet time. We rush the magic at our peril. Feast your eyes instead and gently sink in.
