This is "Chameli" the female #SnowLeopard at #OfficialTurtleBackZoo one day in March of 2019 when it was starting to #snow which these #bigcats love. In the #wild snow leopards live in the #mountains of Central Asia. They are insulted by thick fur that also covers their wide feet and act as #natural snowshoes. They are excellent leapers & able to jump as far as 50 feet. They use their long tails for balance and as blankets to #protect themselves against the severe mountain chill. At the #zoo Chameli and her mate "Gala" are well adapted to the climate in #NewJersey but as #winter sets in and it gets #colder outside this is the best time to go see them! They often run, leap and jump #playing with each other and their toys! Snow leopards are currently listed as #endangered and at the zoo both #leopards are part of the Species Survival Plan making them #ambassadors for their cousins in the wild to help with #SavingSpecies for future generations. #ZoosMatter more than people realize.
