Offsetting flights //
Yesterday we started to talk about carbon offsetting flights.
Check out the post on @misscomfypants in case you missed it.
Today we're taking about how carbon offsetting is only a way of offsetting our responsibilities.
1️⃣
Giving companies and private people the possibility to offset emissions prevents innovation we need to combat the actual issue - getting away from fossil fuels.
2️⃣
There are so many platforms where you can offset your emissions that it gets really confusing. Just google offsetting flights and you'll see.
Many calculators are solely based on the km/miles you flew. They don't account for layovers, the type of plane, the actual route or the weight of the plane. Therefore you usually pay very little.
Others take all that into account and it gets more expensive. That's okay. Destroying the planet should come at a cost.
3️⃣
Once you found a trustworthy platform, you have to pick a project. In most cases you can either invest in reforestation to plant trees with your money or, sustainable development projects. And here it's really tricky to know what is good and what not. Like, not even the Vatican knew for sure. They invested in a forest which, to this day, hasn't been planted and will never be planted. Yeah, someone screwed over God.
⬇️
The problem: Some offer, like above, a reforestation project and you pay for it. Later you find out that this project would have been realized anyway, with or without offsetting schemes. You'd feel cheated, wouldn't you?
Or, they say they'll invest in climate friendlier biomass plants in Thailand - a project that would have happened anyway because it was funded by development agencies.

What to do?
Research. Use only pages which are certified. If you only pay 60€ for a trip from Europe to Asia, it's probably not trustworthy.
🔽
What else do you want to know? Shall we talk about the good news tomorrow? Hit me up in the comments.

@kilimanjaroporterstz (KPAP) work helps to reach #sdg1 to #endpoverty as they actively work to improve the lives of porters. This is how:⠀

Among the many crucial tasks they perform, implementing and monitoring fair porter practices at companies is among the most important ones.⠀

Fair porter practices include fair wages, tipping, proper gear and food. Furthermore, through KPAP porters also have access to educational training on, for example, money management but also HIV/AIDS awareness and First Aid. This empowers porters as they expand their skillset.⠀

KPAP is an initiative of the International Mountain Explorers Connection and we proudly only promote Kilimanjaro climbs organised by KPAP-verified local partners.⠀

Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary

For this weeks #FunFactFriday we are discussing a not so fun fact, the truth about white tigers. Despite what many exhibitors will tell you, white tigers are not a different subspecies of tiger, they are not Royal White Tigers or snow tigers. Their coloration is due to a double recessive gene that can only occur in Bengal tigers. Sadly, in order to isolate this gene and get more white tigers exhibitors inbreed their tigers. This inbreeding often leads to massive amounts of health issues. One of the first tigers we rescued at Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary was Mohan (pictured). He was rescued from a roadside zoo and as you can see he was severely cross-eyed. This is just one of the many debilitating health issues that can occur. Unfortunately, because white tigers are beautiful they bring in large amounts of money so many traveling exhibitors and roadside zoos continue to breed and exploit them. Please help us Give Animals A Voice and share the truth about white tigers by educating your friends, sharing this post and never going to a facility that uses traveling animal exhibits! #whitetiger #EthicalTourism #givinganimalsavoice

#TRUTHBOMB - This is one-half local culture (which we suggest respecting as a sustainable traveller), and one-half animal cruelty and simply unsustainable.
As a sustainable and responsible traveller, it is possible to participate in local cultures and traditions, but still avoid the parts that are clearly unethical or unsustainable.

These shots were from the Hanoi seafood market that I visited on a walking tour. Seeing these turtles in cages, the amount of fish ready for purchase and the amount of plastic used is simply wrong.
As a sustainable traveller you can choose not to support this. And although it's part of the culture now, hopefully, with time and dwindling demand, this kind of scene will become a thing of the past.

#REALTALK: It's been difficult for me to understand how to be an ethical tourist here in Sa Pa. Let me (try to) explain.

It's been an amazing couple of days exploring the remote highlands in Northern Vietnam, and leaning more about the dozens of ethnic minorities that live here.

But when you visit, you're bombarded by adults who want to help guide you up and down the slippery and muddy trails (they seriously are helpful) in return for you buying something later (as I found out, they're not part of the tour). Or by children selling trinkets, who should be in school, but are hustling on the street instead.

I want to support them all because I can, but I don't know how much or what way. Especially the children. Sometimes I don't know if tourism is helping or hurting these communities.

So long story long, I love traveling, but there are some real moments where I feel very much like an outsider looking in with a magnifying glass, gawking at "traditional lifestyles" from my own posh and comfy life.

If any of y'all have any advice or words of wisdom, please share with us all!🙏 #ethicaltourism #touristing #visitsapa #explorevietnam #bemindful

She was forced into the cub petting industry and lived in squalor being cruelly bred, again and again, having her babies ripped from her minutes after their birth. Thankfully, she was rescued, but there are still countless others like her who need help.

H.R. 1380: The Big Cat Public Safety Act will end cub-petting. We are so close to getting the bill passed! Today is the LAST DAY to get co-sponsors in the house to join before it's submitted tomorrow! Please go to tcwr.org/advocacy to reach out to your state representatives.

We need a big push before it's submitted to the House! Please ask your friends, loved ones, and co-workers to support H.R. 1380 today. Together, we can spark change!

Revival Ice Cream

What's the best vegan ice cream you've ever had? We would have to say the best vegan ice cream we've ever had was at @sweetritual in Austin or at @saltandstraw. But we must say @revivalicecream has also made it to the top of the list. ⁣

First of all, out of the 12 overall seasonal options, 4 of them were vegan, and only one was a sorbet. VEGANS NEEDS OPTIONS, TOO! And they need to be good, not just available. 👍⁣

This ultra delicious double scoop was a chocolate praline with a coconut milk base, served in a flaxseed waffle bowl. ⁣

𝗬𝗨𝗠.⁣

Tell us about the best vegan ice cream you've ever had below!

URGENT: All Daniel wants for his birthday is to get the co-sponsors we need for H.R. 1380: The Big Cat Public Safety Act! Today is the last day co-sponsors in the House can join as supporters of the bill. It will be submitted tomorrow and no more co-sponsors can be added. Please reach out to your state representatives today! We need a big push!

IF you've already emailed your congressmen you CAN do it again! Sometimes they need a little extra reminder (or a thank you if they have co-sponsored since your last email)

You can reach out quickly and easily through our website at tcwr.org/advocacy!

Please share with others so we can create a better future for big cats!

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai, Thailand | Recently, I’ve seen the topic of elephant sanctuaries in Southeast Asian countries and the tourism that goes along with it pop up in my social media feeds. It’s a topic that is always present as mediums like Instagram spread travel inspiration and set high expectations. Here are some points I’ve outlined in my own experience and research about elephant sanctuaries and how to enjoy celebrating elephants the ethical way:

1. DON’T ride the elephants or do anything that would be considered encouraging “elephant tricks.” While elephant feeding may not be “unethical” and elephant bathing is tip-toeing the line, riding an elephant surely is unethical. Not only can it be painful for elephants to carry humans, these elephants have undergone extreme training to ‘crush their spirits’ so that they are ‘tame enough’ to be ridden. This practice is called, “Phajaan,” and usually begins on baby elephants.

2. “Ethical” sanctuaries two years ago might not be ethical now, or are moving into “unethical” practices. I use the example of Elephant Jungle Sanctuary in Chiang Mai. I went there about two years ago for a half-day tour with the elephants. I did weeks of research looking for sanctuaries that were actually sanctuaries and didn’t allow unethical practices like elephant tricks and riding tours. For the case of Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, the elephants there were those rescued from unethical places, and they were taken care of by “mahouts” from the surrounding Karen village. Now, almost two years later, I talk about my experience with the Sanctuary as a good one, but I’m not sure I would recommend people go there now. This is to say that a YouTuber, Instagram influencer, or travel blogger can give you all the recommendations in the world, but please go beyond that and do even more research!

3. Always keep your eyes open and spread the word. When your friends ask you for travel advice, you can take the opportunity to make a difference.

What are your thoughts on the topic?

Mae Tau Po was one of the first elephants we rescued here at Never Forget earlier this year. At 28 years old, her beauty always takes our breath away. We feel her wisdom when we are with her and being in her presence is a privilege and gift. We are here to ensure Mae Tau Po and the other 8 elephants in our care live robust lives in their natural habitat where they are protected and respected.

If you are interested in meeting Mae Tau Po or helping with her care, please check out the link in our bio for more information. Thank you so much for your support!

Samui Elephant Haven

I wish I could add more videos into this story - first we watched Sudurat walk up the hill, whilst the 3 younger elephants were already in the pool!
No messing around!
Sudurat then stood at the edge of the pool, gently cooling herself with splashes of water.....Sudarat is the nanny of Moloair, Nong Peche and Kwan Samui @samuielephanthaven in Koh Samui, Thailand.
Then she went into the pool. She walked in.....it’s a big deal....
Meaw from #samuielephanthaven watched this play out and said, this was the first time she had gone into the pool! I was fortunate enough to capture this moment! I was thrilled to see this.
As soon as she got in, the younger 3 decided to get out.... always the way! LOL, we don’t want to play anymore. However they waited for her, it’s so incredibly caring.
Please watch......and believe that elephants have this incredible sense of presence and awareness. They didn’t just walk away, they gathered and waited.
Elephants fascinate me. I am always seeing and learning more. This is why I love to share these videos with you.
If you choose to stand to observe them, you just see so many dynamics and gestures going on between them. You will never never see this if you choose to ride elephants or bathe with them. Elephants have strong family bonds.
Please do not ride or bathe with elephants when on holiday, please choose to visit an ethical elephant sanctuary.
Thank you.

Elephants, such a lovely creatures have been our friends and our partners for a very long time in Cambodia. There wouldn’t be any temples if the elephants were not here. They helped our ancestors a lot to build our ancient cities including Angkor Wat. But in recent years, the number of elephants are decreasing rapidly for environmental issues and for commercial rides. Now is the time to think about the way how can we improve their welfare in the same way as ours. Mondulkiri elephant sanctuary tour is one of the best ways to learn more how can we make our world sustainable for our future.

Only 7 Tuesdays until #GivingTuesday at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge December 3! Be sure to save the date & help us reach our $40,000 goal to kick off our #2020Vision campaign: Your Focus. Their Future.

Giving the public access to education about big cats and their lives in the wild and in captivity is an important part of our 2020 Vision; one that long-time supporter Nancy P. feels should certainly be a focus:

"Definitely, I think [education] is very important – it never ceases to amaze me that people still can own wild animals, pumas and tigers, and in many states it is still legal. I think this program is just phenomenal and needs to be supported. What they get at TCWR is better (care) than most zoos I’ve seen. If a cat has to live its life out somewhere it should get the dignity and compassion they receive and Turpentine Creek. There I learn about tigers – my passion - and why they shouldn’t be owned privately."

How do we best protect the most beautiful destinations in the world? This has become an important conversation in the travel space. From over tourism to climate change, some of the worlds most stunning places are in danger. And we have to take steps to protect them. While places like Myanmar and Thailand have begun to limit where travelers can go, it begins with us. The first step is to acknowledge the issues of over tourism and climate change. Only then can we move forward to fix the problems. ⠀

From the Brilliant: @joshkathey: ⠀

"Ever wonder what an ancient civilization would've looked like back in its golden age? I don't even know the height of these temple's but its all real and its all there. I just couldn't believe my eyes that these structures were built hundreds of years ago 😱"

Did you know Asian elephants have smaller ears compared to African elephants? In the wild, Asian elephants naturally live in jungle habitats that are cooler in temperature compared to the hot, desert environments in Africa. When they flap their ears it cools them down and this means Asian elephants need smaller ears, or personal air conditioning devices as we like to call them here at Never Forget!

Another discussion today, as recent ones made me wonder about something else. I’m actually writing a huge blog post about it that I’ll publish later tonight and will share on Stories 💌
It’s undeniable and most of you agreed, that we’re undoubtedly privileged to be able to travel and therefore we should respect local culture. 🏘
While many are quick to claim that tourism helps local communities no matter what, is it always the case...? So many people think that they’re always helping locals in a way by going to less privileged countries, yet, staying at new western hotel chains.
🎲
As tourists we just want to enjoy ourselves and comfort is surely a priority for many. It’s easy to book an all-inclusive package holiday or even a fancy hotel, and go relax. Don’t get me wrong, I like fancy hotels and especially when I was younger I didn’t think much of it and also - didn’t know the truth about it. 🌋
It’s important to keep something in mind: there’s a difference between a fancy hotel in Western Europe and a developing country where people live in poverty (poverty defined by 50%+ people living on under $1 per day).
🛫💰
For every $100 spent on tour/resort in a developing country only $5 actually stays in the country’s economy. Only $5! 😵
Let’s think about it next time we want to book a beach resort vacation in The Gambia or India (among others). 🗝
I’m not saying don’t do it, but keep in mind that your money won’t help the locals.
⚖️
Another example is Thailand where 70% of money spent by tourists ends up leaving the country because of foreign investments. 💸
While we can all do something by staying locally even half of the time, at least let’s be respectful to locals. Thoughts and comments are always welcome! 🙏 —-
P.S. It was hard to choose a photo to this caption as it’s an uneasy topic especially as instagram pushes glamorous photos up, so here’s a local farm in Hawaii that dedicates its profits to send people who work there to college, as otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to afford it🙂

Natural building and sustainable technology combined in our hand made rocket stoves 🔥

In an effort to use as little propane as we can we cook with wood on a few different types of rocket stoves and methane produced from our biodigester. The wood used is from off cuts from our workshop and the local sawyer. The biodigester is fed by human waste and cow manure 💩

This rocket stove was built primarily with adobe bricks and then finished with a clay straw plaster.

Here is our dear friend @suciaschmelke lighting the stoves up to begin cooking some chicharones 😋 Love you Al! 💙

Patara Elephant Farm

Do you know how to care for an elephant?
.
When we visited this elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand we learned all about how to approach elephants, how to feed them and all about their diets, and about their skincare routine. (Yes their skincare routine is even more specific than mine!) and after learning all about it we got to be a caretaker to our elephant for the day. Our elephants name is Portoo and she was such a sweetheart!.
.
When visiting an elephant sanctuary it’s really important to do your research and make sure that it meets the standards for humane treatment by Travelife or another science-based organization that performs audits for animal welfare. In 2019 Patara elephant farm met those standards and is considered an ethical sanctuary. .

In HUGE NEWS, TripAdvisor announced this week it will “no longer sell tickets to, or generate revenue from, any attraction that continues to contribute to the captivity of future generations of cetaceans”. In practice this means a ticket sales ban for attractions that breed and import whales, dolphins and other cetaceans on both TripAdvisor and @viatortravel platforms, the policy taking full effect by the end of the year.
.
This progressive move follows TripAdvisor’s new animal welfare policy in 2016, which ended tickets sales for animal interactions such as elephant rides and tiger petting. A wonderful step in the right direction, please thank @tripadvisor for doing the right thing by the animals.

Nong Pech and Molorair found one of their mahouts resting peacefully in the shade of the trees, minding his own business and taking a few moments to himself. Two trunks begin to discreetly and gently open his banana bag, but were caught red-handed! ‘Thieves, pickpockets, banana pinchers, Nong Pech and Molorair what are you doing?’ Can you caption their cheeky reply?
