Angel from the Sky - The little egret is a species of small heron in the family Ardeidae. The genus name comes from the Provençal French Aigrette, "egret", a diminutive of Aigron," heron". The species epithet garzetta is from the Italian name for this bird, garzetta or sgarzetta.

The cold hazy mornings of Bharatpur, Rajasthan are sprinkled with breathtaking scenes like this. Jackals, Herds of Deer, Monkeys and a hundred different birds can be seen crossing densely canopied pathways of the Sanctuary. Walking on these pathways, you are guaranteed beautiful picture and then some. And what a view it is. Pictured here, is a Spotted Deer Stag crossing the pathway at dawn, just as the sunlight starts to hit the road. The misty mornings and the blue hour made a brilliant silhouette of the stag. One that i will always cherish, years down the road.

This is the inside of metal ducting—the kind attached to a clothes dryer that directs air to the outside. I illuminated the inside of the ducting with a single light source that was carefully placed at the opposite end from the camera. Centering the light maximized the reflections and created a center point for the concentric circles. Once the lighting was complete, I experimented with different lenses before settling on a 20mm focal length. The wide lens forced the perspective and created the most concentric circles. The final step was to add a bit of color to the otherwise gray tubing.⠀

As I wrote in the first post of the series, when a client offers you the freedom and trust to explore all possibilities for a project, every creative door remains wide open. With only the guiding intention of “concentric circles” as an objective, you are free to explore all subjects and interpretations without any constraints on how to make your photographs. As a photographer, this is what you dream of—an open-ended project where the client trusts you to imagine, solve, create, illuminate, capture, and convey.⠀

I began the project with visits to all of my favorite places to find subject matter: a local hardware store, a bike shop, a cooking store, a bed and bath store, a fabric store, a marine supply store, and a sporting goods store. After days of shopping, I returned to my studio with a collection of subjects that ranged in price from a few dollars to nearly a hundred. All made it into the final submission to the client.⠀

When the project was complete, I’d produced about 20 different images in the hope that a few of them might be just what the client needed. Over the next few days, I’ll continue to share a few of the photographs—as well as how they were made.⠀

This is a silicone trivet—the type you might use under a hot pan to prevent damage to a countertop. It was only $4.99 at my local bed and bath store.⠀

I used two lights and positioned them at almost the same level as the trivet so that the illumination would rake across the rings to create shape and depth. I added a different color to each light so that I could create a mix of colors: The color of each light mixing with the red color of the trivet, plus the colors of each light mixing with one another. The next step was to position two flags (black fabric on a frame) just above the level of the surface of the trivet. This allowed light to pass underneath the flag and strike the rings of the trivet, but not illuminate much of the space between the rings. Finally, I added a diffuse source (an 8” silk dot) to provide controllable fill to the space between the rings.⠀

This first concentric circle image was the most complex to create. It was all done in-camera using a computer-controlled rotating plate. On top of the plate, I positioned a 12”x12” LED panel that was covered with different colored gels. After a couple of hours of experimenting, I determined that a five-second exposure combined with a specific rotational speed was the right combination to produce the look I was after. The critical element was to be sure to create a “beginning” dot from the LED. This was accomplished by allowing to table to come to rest at the very end of the exposure to allow the dot to “burn in,’ and produce the impression of motion.⠀
