Sunset colours

This little trout pond near Edson is a great location for reflections.
The small body of water is located adjacent to highway 16 just east of Millers Lake and is usually surrounded by campers that enjoy free camping close to town. Notice the rings left on the surface by a trout snatching flies from the water.

Incredibly beautiful mesocyclone on this tornadic supercell between Findlater and Bethune, Saskatchewan Canada. This storm eventually came to Craven and shut down Saturday night's big show. Taken on July 13, 2019. .

One of my favorite hikes to date! We showed up to the trailhead around 5am just to make sure we got a parking spot, slept for a few hours in the car, and then headed out. The weather wasn’t sunny like we had hoped early July would be, but honestly it made the hike much more rewarding. Imagine hiking in rain (and a little bit of snow!) for a few miles. You’re wet, cold, and getting hungrier by the minute. Then you come upon a tea house nestled in the mountains. It’s warm, provides shelter from the rain, and there’s hot chocolate and tea. Now imagine walking a few more miles, with epic views all around you, to ANOTHER cozy tea house tucked away along the trail. Then, on your way back toward the trailhead, you’re constantly looking at one of the most turquoise-blue lakes you’ve ever seen. Not bad right?

The Next Generation.... Not only did we find Gemma to be alive and well but we found her with a new cub!

We were out hiking when we saw a mother bear and her cub deep in the forest, it was dark and branches were obstructing our view so we couldn’t identify mom. It is always exciting to see new life in the spring so branches or not we were ecstatic to see our first cub of the year.

The following day we checked back to see if we could get another glimpse of the mom and cub and were gifted with a magical experience we will never forget. Mom came into view and laid down on this log to rest while her young cub explored all that was new outside of the den. We couldn’t believe our eyes, it was Gemma. We thought she was dead and here she was as a first time mom with a tiny new cub.
Being able to observe Gemma since she was a young cub, to see her grow up and know all the hardships she faced and to now find her not only alive but with a cub was emotional. To know her and Angus both survived being hit by cars, found each other, mated and now had a cub felt like fate.

Tears were in our eyes as we watched Gemma attempt to nap while her curious cub pawed at her face wanting to play. The photo I shared yesterday was taken when Gemma laid down to nurse, her cub was on the other side so we just listened to the sounds of the cub humming as she nursed. After feeding mom laid down to nap with her cub snuggled in close and we left the bears to be.
We know the cub is female but have not given her a name yet, she is precious and looks just like mom. She has grown a lot since I took this photo and I’m happy to report both mom and cub are doing well.

Thank you to everyone that has followed along with Gemma’s story, taken the time to read my posts or left a comment. I have lots more to share of this first time mom and her special cub.
Have a great weekend everyone 🐾

Red Fox Hunting

Stumbled upon this red fox who was attacking a grouse with chicks (decided it is a Spruce grouse). Unfortunately such is life and one of the little chicks became lunch. If you look closely, you can see a little leg sticking out of the foxes mouth.

Fridays are for the Party Animals and this Friday's Party Animal is the Polar Bear (Ursus Meritimus)! The polar bear is a carnivore whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean. It is classified as "vulnerable" by the IUCN due to habitat loss related to climate change. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time on the sea ice where they hunt for their main food source, seals. Because of their dependence on the sea ice, polar bears are classified as marine mammals.
I took this photo in early April of 2016 out on the sea ice off the coast of Baffin Island significantly north of the Arctic Circle. We were getting ready to call it a day as a major storm was blowing in and visibility was dropping rapidly when we came across a fresh seal carcass. When we got closer to investigate, we found a mother polar bear and her two cubs who had just finished gorging on the seal. It is a long story, but at one point, the cub in this photo disappeared and the mother searched for him frantically eventually leaving her other cub on top of the iceberg in the background (that blue thing is a huge iceberg that was frozen into the sea ice) to try to find him . . . in this photo the mother has found her cub and they are racing to rejoin the other cub.

Ethical wildlife photography. Wild wolf pups live in a sensitive area that requires photographic choices so as not to unduly disrupt the situation. Too many people or too frequent attention can cause unnatural disturbances that can cause harm. This photo was taken with a 1000mm lens from a considerable distance. We did our best to limit attention and waited until the pups had moved from the area to a rendezvous site before publishing photos which were taken a month ago. They were a joy to watch, often being affectionate and in constant contact with each other.

"NORTHERN FRIENDS... BEETLES IN THE WILD... WOW!!!... I've been asked many times, for advice about venturing into the forest alone... Keep it simple... Always be prepared for the unknown... In my opinion, the most important thing, is to always keep your eyes and ears open... Know your surroundings... You never know what you might encounter... The reality is, that most people have no idea was is going on around them... MOTHER NATURE works in mysterious ways... Case in point, I accidentally ran into some forest festivities, that were occurring right in front of me... X-RATED... Check out these magnificent captures, of my tiny little friends, BILLY and BETTY, THE RED SOLDIER BEETLES... Yes, what you think is going on - is actually going on!!... Up close and personal... It's mating season... After these quick pics, I gave them the privacy that they deserved... Ha! Ha!... SOLDIER BEETLES are beneficial insects, they feed mainly on pollen and nectar... They DO NOT damage flowers or other plants and are harmless to people... They are beneficial because they are predators (larvae) and pollinators (adults)... Incredible creatures... Absolutely gorgeous and stunning!!!...it's a MACRO WORLD out there, get out and enjoy it..."

Found this gorgeous frog to practise taking RAW photos with. I think I love shooting photos this way. I just have to learn a new workflow when editing. For the non-photographers following me it’s like going to a restaurant and asking for all the ingredients to your meal and prepping it yourself. You have full control over how much of this spice to use and how much of that one. That’s what shooting in RAW is like. Once I put it in my program I can decide how much to change the color or the brightness of the photo, instead of the camera deciding for me. So this little frog is my first victim, I mean test subject and I think he looks great! Bonus points if you read this whole story!! 🙌🏻 .

Big Momma Moose #throwbackthursday (2015)

We watched this Momma moose and her two young resting and then feeding in K-country. This photo is after she passed by the front of the car (I was beside the passenger tire), they were not much more than 5ft from us. Amazingly enough, one of the young attempted to have a drink of her mothers milk as well while standing right in front of us.
It was one of my most amazing experiences to date

🌿Did you know that more than 8 billion tonnes of plastic has been produced globally? And approximately 60% of all plastic ever made is now in landfills or the natural environment. Not to mention, 40% of the plastic produced each year is packaging, which is used once then thrown away. (@10000changes)
_____________________
🌿For example, every minute 1 million plastic bags are used globally. These bags are typically only used for 12-15 minutes then thrown away!! _____________________
🌊 About 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans each year – that’s the equivalent of one garbage truck filled with plastic every minute!
_____________________
🌊 Sadly, 89% of plastic waste found at the bottom of the ocean is single-use (like beverage bottles, food wrappers and plastic bags). This is convenience packaging filling our landfills and polluting our oceans.
_____________________
🐠 If we continue on this path, it’s estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight.
_____________________
Can we change this path we’re on? Of course we can! While plastic plays an important role in our lives, the choice to use single-use plastics is typically a matter of convenience. Will you commit to reducing your single-use plastics?

🌿Did you know that more than 8 billion tonnes of plastic has been produced globally? And approximately 60% of all plastic ever made is now in landfills or the natural environment. Not to mention, 40% of the plastic produced each year is packaging, which is used once then thrown away. (@10000changes)

🌊 Sadly, 89% of plastic waste found at the bottom of the ocean is single-use (like beverage bottles, food wrappers and plastic bags). This is convenience packaging filling our landfills and polluting our oceans.

🐠 If we continue on this path, it’s estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight.
