Today was an early day!
It began with a meeting with United Working Families as we talked through budget plans and how we build going forward. Attending the meeting were Alderwoman Maria Hadden, Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez, Alderman Daniel La Spata, Alderperson Michael D. Rodriguez, State Representative Celina Villanueva and the UWF crew.
We also had a special visit by State Representative Delia Ramirez! Thanks so much for the Springfield update!

Next I set up my Halloween prop and outfit in City Hall Chambers. For the 4th day I was the first city council to make it to the floor!
Today’s Budget heading focused on the OEMC, which covers emergency management, the proposed merger of our Fleet and Facilities Management and the Department of IT. It ended with the Office of the Inspector General.

Then my wife, mother-in-law, and I took the kids trick or treating! Shout out to the snow covered trees with their fall leaves still on...it definitely provided a much needed moment of zen.
Now it’s time to rest up and get ready for tomorrow!

Daily Wrap!

This is the third day that I have been the first city council member to show up to the chamber. #justwantedtosharethat
Today’s budget hearing focused on the Fire Department and our Libraries.

First I want to thank the many amazing Firefighters that we have across the city for risking their lives to save ours. You all represent the best of us and it is appreciated.
Speaking of representation, I do believe we can improve by having a more reflective staff, and I want to thank the Commissioner for pointing us towards the DHR (Department of Human Resources) as the folks to bring this up to.

Of the city's 4,767 firefighters and paramedics, 65.2% are white, 16.6% are African American and 15.9% are Latinx. And, they are over 90% male.

We can do better and we will as a city.
Next we spoke to the acting Commissioner of the Department of Public Health, Dr. Allison Arwady, as she presented the city’s mental health plan. I need to see more detail, but I appreciated the conversation and take.

After city council I headed to the ward to prep and the present for our #40thWard Budget townhall, where we shared neighbor feedback about where we should increase and decrease budget as well as what progressive sources of revenue folks were in support of.

I want to thank you all for really being proponents of TIF Surplus, the LaSalle St Tax (although it is state level, your advocacy speaks volumes), a corporate head tax, and PILOT. As we see how this budget process progresses, we will work to keep you updated!

Tomorrow we have a meeting at 7:30am in City Hall, so I am knocking out!

Ps. Tomorrow is Halloween too, sooooo.... 😉

Ps shout out to the union out there striking today...and the wild amount of Scabbies they brought with them!

Ten years ago today, President Obama signed the Shepard-Byrd Hate Crime Prevention Act into law. Named after Mathew Shepard and James Byrd Jr., two men who were targeted and brutally murdered because of their sexuality (Shepard), and race (Byrd), the law expanded the federal government's ability to prosecute hate crimes.
The Shepard-Byrd Act also empowered the Department of Justice to prosecute crimes committed because of a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, gender or disability as hate crimes. It was the first time that the words, “lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender” appeared in the U.S. Code (DOJ archives, 2013). While progress has been made in raising awareness about hate crimes, the unfortunate reality is that hate crimes are on the rise across the United States. Clearly, there is more work to be done. It starts with calling out and reporting hate speech and hate crimes, talking to friends and family about the dangers of hate speech, being an ally for victims, and uplifting and promoting messages of tolerance and acceptance, to name a few.

Our community is strengthened by its diversity, and together, we can unite against hate. #40thward

I also want to make sure that I highlight and celebrate Italian American Heritage Month! I believe it is important that although many of us have problems with the celebration of Christopher Columbus, that should not be conflated with our support and solidarity with our Italian American community. As the son of immigrants, I also identify heavily with the experience of first generation Italians and the struggle their immigrant families endured when they first came to this country.

We are ONE people and I believe we need to celebrate our shared experience and our unique cultures as well!

Good morning neighbors,

I want to wish everyone a Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

As someone who is a Mayan descendant, it is important to me that we recognize all of the indigenous people across the world - many of whom have had their history wiped, attacked, and co-opted. I stand in solidarity with the many tribes across the globe and the original people everywhere.

In observance of this holiday, our ward office will be closed today.

To celebrate National Coming Out Day our LGBTQ staff and volunteers who were in the office today took this photo! Visibility matters! It’s also important to recognize that not everyone is ready to or feels safe to come out. Only 21 states (including Illinois) have laws on the books protecting LGBTQ folx from discrimination. Just this week, the Supreme Court heard three cases involving people who were fired for being LGBTQ. Our country has made progress, but there is more work to be done. In the meantime, we will continue to speak up and speak out in support of the LGBTQ community, and in celebration of our diversity. #nationalcomingoutday #40thward

Daily Wrap!!! This morning began at the All Chicago Breakfast. All Chicago is an umbrella agency that works with different groups to tackle homelessness in the city. I was invited by #40thWard Neighbor Lydia Stazen, who is also the Executive Director of Global Institute on Homelessness, which looks at how different cities around the world address the problem. At the fundraiser over $50,000 was raised (and matched) towards the work being done!

Next was the committee meeting on Transportation and the Public Way, which is a meeting where changes in the streets are made.
After that was the Economic, Capital, and Technology Development Committee Meeting, where we got a chance to hear from Maurice Cox, the Mayor’s appointment for Commissioner of Planning. Mr. Cox is a truly qualified and creative person and I look forward to working with him in developing an Arts District in the ward as well as working toward solutions for more Affordable Housing and Economic Development In the Ward.
I ended the day by stopping by the Cannabis Townhall at Truman College hosted by the Mayor’s office. I think it is important that we get the city legislation right so that we remove the stigma from what will be a legal substance (that is less dangerous than alcohol) and that we make sure we bring social equity to the city by supporting black and brown folks in being a part of the industry before large players work to keep them out. Shout out to all of the folks who came out!

Daily Wrap!! This morning started out in the 22nd Ward, visiting the Skender manufacturing plant. Skender creates affordable housing as modules that can be brought to sites and completed, saving time and potentially cost as it works to scale up as an endeavor. Shout outs to #40thWard neighbor Liz Kersjes for including me and to Alderperson Michael D. Rodriguez for hosting us in his ward! Shout out to Alderwoman Maria Hadden, Alderman Daniel La Spata, Alderman Matt Martin, Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez, Alderman Felix Cardona, and Erika Wozniak Francis from 39th Ward Alderman Samantha Nugent’s office for attending!

Extra shout out to El Original for the tacos after!
Next I headed up to North Park University, where former Deputy Aide Daniel Storm organized a panel where I and Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez spoke about our experiences before and since coming to office for Latino Heritage month. It was a very frank talk about our experience and I want to thank everyone who was there for allowing me to share and be vulnerable in that space!
After that I came to the ward office to catch up on emails/admin, sign off some permits/requests and then I met with members of the Ethiopian Community Association of Chicago (ECAC), which is located in the ward at 5800 N Lincoln! ECAC is attempting to establish a museum/cultural center in the space, so our office is honored to be able to help in moving that forward. As someone who grew up in an immigrant family, I know how important it is for the community to have a cultural space!

Now I’m trying to rest and not get a full cold - there’s much more to do tomorrow before our family heads out of town for the weekend (first time off as a family since the election)! #AffordableHousing

Daily Wrap!! This morning began at 7am at a Solidarity Breakfast at Stephen T Mather High School with members of Chicago Teachers Union, SEIU Healthcare IL & IN, SEIU Local 73, and Chicago Democratic Socialists of America! Shout out to Melinda Bunnage (SEIU/DSA) and Mary Rose O’Shea among with so many great teachers and support staff who showed up!

Afterwards, I toured Mather to check out some of the new remodeling at some of the classrooms but not before Principal Auffant and I got out #FistbumpFriday on, greeting the students as they came in for the day!

Next I checked in at the ward office, where Lindsay, our Comms Director, was working on the latest newsletter. Lisa, our Engagement Coordinator, was working on establishing the 40th Ward Committees but needed help, so I led the team on a brainstorm on how to organize and rebrand the concept. The result? Some dry erase scribbles and the newly named VOICE Working Groups! VOICE stands for Visualizing Organized Inter-Community Engagement, and is made up of 3 working groups : the Justice Working Group, the Youth Working Group, and our Senior Working Group! More to come on this but if you’re interested, email Lisa at lisa@40thward.org. The Voice is Yours!! (Credit to Lindsay for the tagline...and Dres from Black Sheep)! Then I worked on the flyer for it as well as a new updated flyer for the #40thWard ICEBreakers canvass!! We will be partnering with Centro Romero on these going forward as it is based on their Community Navigator program. Shout out to Susi Centro Romero for all the help!! See you all for that on Saturday Oct 12. from 10a-1pm!

A long day but it started and ended well!

8am - Meeting with Department of Housing Commissioner Marisa Novara to talk about the city wide plan for affordable housing as well as resources and opportunities to bring more affordable housing stock to the #40thWard! We have too many folks worrying about priced out and folks who work here and wish they could afford to live here. We also want to make sure that we have the density necessary to sustain our small businesses, but that we develop it responsibly. This was a great first discussion!

Then we drove back to the ward for our #40thWard Office meeting. Shout out to our newest team member, Cleon, who will be helping with ordinance research!

After that it was a Monday, full of catching up on emails and reaching out to neighbors, city workers, and department staff as we work to solve issues!

Next I was proud to stand in solidarity with the Chicago Teachers Union, and the teachers from Passages Elementary School as they voted unanimously for strike authorization. They are fighting for equal pay as they make 75% of what CPS teachers make, which leads to higher turnover at the school. They also need English language teachers as it focuses on refugee students. What really struck me was that the CEO was hesitant to put Sanctuary school language in their agreement that would set expectations that they don’t allow ICE in the school. Considering that ICE showed up just a few blocks away a few months ago, it was just unacceptable to me. As a child of immigrants, I know that my parents would have been scared to be vocal about school needs so I am beyond appreciative to the teachers for speaking out. Now it’s time for Passages to meet the same guidelines as other unionized charters in the city. Do the right thing here, Craig Maki!

Then I went back to ward night where I had a really great visit by members of West Andersonville Neighbors Together! Thank you Debby and Karen for really making my day as we discussed various topics that pertain to our ward and city!!

Daily Wrap!

This morning I joined the Board of the Edgewater Historical Society for a discussion celebrating Trumbull being designated as a landmark and other ways we can support the great work they do from our office!

I then visited Stephen T Mather High School, where we had our Mobile City Hall event, where neighbors were able to get their City Keys! The City Key is the City’s ID, which also functions as a ventra card, a library card, and also provides pharmaceutical discounts! Shout out to Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia for this great program and to Communities United for helping on the ground!

Next I stopped by the block part at the 5900 block of Greenview at the very northeast corner of the ward!

Today, I started my day by stopping in at the Illinois Department of Employment Security - it is in essence, the State’s Employment Agency. Currently there are 3 locations in the city, with the only northside location being in the 40th Ward on Lawrence.
The work the IDES does is crucial. They link up those seeking employment, with training, workshops, and opportunities to secure a job. Many thanks to Chicagoland Retail Sector Center for partnering with them here in the ward. Shout out to Kelly Brown, Director of Training and #40thward neighbor!

I am committed to making sure that IDES is connected to communities that need the support. I think about what it’s like for folks who get laid off of jobs that each year seek to cut staffing just to continue increasing profits, leaving families in dire situations. Places like IDES are the support they need. I’m proud to have it in our ward!

I then spent the majority of my day working on administrative functions to ensure that our team is running efficiently. With out first quarter in office we have gotten so much accomplished, now I want to look at how we are operating as a unit, so that together we can connect neighbors with the services they need and also connect them with each other - our community is something that I’m passionate about building, which is why I always look to improve our organizing.

I finished the evening at a Gala for the Latino Caucus Foundation. Comprised of Latino City Council Members and City Clerk Valencia, we raised funds to provide scholarships for Latino students across the city. Each member selects 2 students in their ward who will be awarded $5000 toward college. It is an honor to be a part of it and bring that to the #40thWard and I want to thank Alderman Gilbert Villegas, Chairman of the Foundation, as well as Alderman Roberto Maldonado, Chair of the Latino Caucus and Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, our Vice Chair.
Now it’s Netflix and chill time with my remarkable wife, Valerie!

See y’all tomorrow!

Today I was fortunate enough to attend the Metropolitan Planning Council’s luncheon, with keynote speaker Raj Getty, who presented a brilliant breakdown of how the environments that children are raised in affects their ability to do better than their parents. He also, through data, showed that Chicago is ranked 50 out of 50 when it comes to the stark difference between the experience based on race here in our city. It was informative and helpful in validating my thoughts behind how best to create opportunities here in Chicago!

Hey @votepatoconnor , can you explain why two large men were blocking the entrance to the precinct 22 ward 40 polling place, and wouldn’t let me through until they handed me one of your campaign postcards? Is this kind of voter intimidation and illegal activity that has kept you the 40th ward alderman for 35 years? Is this what we’ll have to look forward to if we don’t manage to vote you out this time?! GOD I LOVE CHICAGO POLITICS
