Thinly thrown beakers, swipe to see the same form sliced in half when freshly made on the wheel. I don’t do this much these days, cutting pots in half, but back when I was learning how to throw it really does indicate how well you’re moving the clay. The most common issue you’ll find is weight in lower half of the walls, excess clay that you’ll either have to trim away, leading to a drastic change of shape, or simply live with a pot that’s bottom heavy, which is fundamentally a show of poor craftsmanship, (depending on the shape of course and if it’s a functional vessel or not). The cavity you see underneath is simply where the wire has pulled the base up as I yanked it upwards to reveal the cross section. These are thrown with about 200 grams of clay and I really try to get them as thin and tall as possible. My glazes go on quite thickly, so if the clay walls beneath are thick as well the piece ends up being much heavier than usual. The lip is thrown to a sharp rim, this fits nicely into the corners of your mouth in a way squared off rims or overly chunky ones don’t, it also conveys a sense of fineness. If the rim were to be razor sharp you’d imagine the whole vessel to be incredibly delicate and as light as a feather, whereas a thick squared rim does the opposite, before even picking it up you might imagine it to be heavy. Lips and edges communicate so much about the vessels they encircle.
There isn’t much to trim away on these but I do anyway, I place them upside-down over a chuck that fits snuggly into the interior space of the beaker. I’ll then skim over the outside just to make sure the walls are nice and straight while also removing a little bit of clay. The bottom corner is turned the most, there’s inevitably going to be more clay there than anywhere else, so I turn a bevelled edge around the diameter of the base. The wiring off marks are trimmed over and smoothed and finally my maker’s mark is pushed in.

New mini in process! (Will share Sunny’s 2” mini soon). This sculpture will be 3” tall, and no it’s not a chicken. I’m not sure why, but it made sense to focus on the body first this time. This will be Sunny’s ‘cousin’ @msrubywiggles - For those interested in a mini, I will take a couple orders within the month. No details at this time, so keep an eye out here on IG and FB for announcements. 💜

That should be my Christmas living room decoration.

Have you decorate up your Christmas tree and home?
We did it Sunday. Maybe it is a little bit early, but my kids love Christmas time.
