Who goes there?

We stopped overnight in White Mountains NP, and were greeted on the way in by lots of Central Netted Dragons (Ctenophorus nuchalis)! They were scampering across the track, darting back into their tiny little homes. Many had made holes under scraps of wood left on the track, like this one in my photo. Their colour is highly variable, and the ones here were quite dully-patterned compared to their brighter counterparts in western New South Wales (but still pretty!). Central Netted Dragons have a wide distribution, found from Western Australia to the arid and semi-arid regions of QLD and NSW.

Touchdown!
This gorgeous male Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) is landing for some reconnaissance before he and the flock fly down to drink. We had a few hours spare one afternoon, and decided to stay by a tiny spring-fed waterhole for some birding πŸ˜„πŸ¦πŸ“· Patience paid off when a flock of about 5+ of these cockies came by! Do you know how to differ between male and female Red-tailed black cockies? Males like the one in the photo have red panels in their tail feather (rectrices), have black plumage and dark grey-black bills. Females have yellow-orange panels in their rectrices with black barring, yellow speckles across their head, neck and wings, and an off-white, greyish bill! .

Pantaloons!
I didn't notice what was going on until I was going back through my photos. Either it was a stray wind, or mama made her chicks some awfully floofy pants :P
This is a small flock of Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia guttata), and nicely shows juvenile, male, and female birds. The male has the lovely chestnut cheek and bar across the breast, and the juveniles differ from the adult female with their paler bills edged in black/brown.
These are very common finches across semi-arid and arid zones, and if you wait long enough at a water source, some are bound to turn up!

An immature male White-winged Triller (Lalage sueurii), perched on Dead Finish (Acacia tetragonophylla). Despite its somewhat dubious-sounding name, Dead Finish is a resource of food for birds when it is blooming, and its tiny golden blooms turn the shrubs into big golden balls that dot the dry gibber plains. It is also a host plant for the parasitic Sandalwood (Santalum leptocladum), increasing the biomass along ephemeral creek beds which is important in a landscape prone to long dry spells and sudden rains β˜€οΈβ˜”

Working through my backlog now! This darling little yellow flower is Annual Yellowtop (Senecio gregorii). Fingers of morning light caught the blooms before touching the rest of the dunes, creating this sweet contrast. This was a very common flower out in Sturt NP, and was particularly abundant around Lake Pinaroo. It's amazing what manages to survive - even thrive - out in the arid zone. .

Canoeing up Lawn Hill Creek in Boodjamulla NP, the air rings with the harsh calls of Great Bowerbirds (Chlamydera nuchalis). Impressive, grey-brown birds with robust bills and beautifully-scalloped plumage, they would swoop from tree to tree, and glide across the creek to watch me paddle. They were very curious, but would become immediately shy the moment my camera came out! This one I snapped through pandanus leaves as it came down to drink, before disappearing back into the strip of lush vegetation along the gorge.

On a field trip to the arid zone for Uni, we accidentally discovered something wonderful: an emu incubating 11 eggs! It's hard to describe the vivid green-blue of the eggs. The hue was so rich, and seemingly out of place with the dry, drab landscape. They nestled like jewels on the sand and sticks the emu had made into a nest.
Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) males are generally well known for being single parents. Females are sequentially polyandrous - meaning that they will usually mate with one male, lay her eggs, and then move on and find another partner once he begins incubating. It's not uncommon for one nest to have eggs belonging to more than one female!

I promised Magpie Geese goslings a while back, and here they are! Is it just me, or do they look like velvety dragons? I think it's the look in their eyes πŸ‘€πŸ‰ Magpie Geese (Anseranas semipalmata)Β  are the only living members of their family Anseranatidae, which is considered to be a very old family that diverged into its own little offshoot before other ducks, geese, and swans. The grey-blue bills of these goslings will change to an orangey-pink when they become adults, and their legs will deepen in tone too. Did you know they have semipalmate toes? That means they're only partly webbed! They spend a lot of time walking and grazing in wetlands, so having freer toes would help with moving around. .

Dinnertime!
This bird chowing down on another bird is a young Brown Goshawk (Accipiter fasciatus). It might look brutal, but this is nature taking its course and predators like this Brown Goshawk are necessary for keeping animals lower down on the foodweb in check. Almost like weeding a garden, when you remove something that grows too quickly, it allows the others to grow and flourish.
I was amazed coming across this scene, as it was completely unexpected. Something made me glance into the gloom of an old paperbark tree, and this little goshawk glared out at me!
While their conservation status is listed as secure so far, their populations have gone down by ~50% in the Arid Zone. Hopefully research is under way, or soon will be, to find out why!

A chilly morning in Brooyar led to finding these baby spiders coated in delicate droplets from the fog. The rest of the camp was just starting to stir when I slipped out and over the creek. It was too gloomy for decent bird shots (although hearing sulfur-crested cockies screeching through the fog was amazing!), so I gave up and put my macro lens on instead. It wasn't until I was heading back that I found the spiders, though! They'll stay clustered together like this for a week or so, and then gradually disperse and make their own little homes πŸ˜ŠπŸ•·πŸ‘

Life is tough when you're small! This juvenile Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa) was partially-balanced on a waterlily pad, eating little water weeds. Despite being part of a breeding group with adults always on the alert, these young birds still have to contend with hungry eels and lightning-fast birds-of-prey. Not to mention foxes and stray dogs and cats! The only thing on this little one's mind though, was how much it could stuff into its belly before catching up to its siblings πŸ˜†

It's International Bat Appreciation Day! πŸ˜„

Did you know that bats are the only mammal capable of true flight? They've evolved into a thousand different species around the world, and are even found in Iceland! They aren't native to the country unfortunately, but are thought to have arrived on freight ships. Bat Conservation International made today a special day to celebrate the return of bats from their winter migrations. Of course, this is in the US and Europe where bats migrate to escape the bitter winters there! Australian bats don't really have this problem.

I wish I had some microbats to share with you, as we have around 80 different species of tiny bats. Alas, I'll have to make do with some adorable, fuzzy, fox-like megabats. Enjoy! 😊

Pictured above are Little Red Flying Foxes (Pteropus scapulatus) and Black Flying Foxes (Pteropus alecto). Both of these bats are listed as Least Concern - for now.
We recently lost more than 20,000 (nearly a third) Spectacled Flying Foxes - so many in fact that they've now been listed nationally as Endangered. This devastating die-off was caused by an intense heatwave, and with climate change predicted to cause more extreme weather events we can only prepare ourselves for what could happen next summer. Carers are still trying to raise the babies who lost their mothers during that heatwave, and baby gear and food is expensive! Donations, even small contributions, go a long way, and you could help save the next generation of these charming bats.

Taking a step away from my regular wildlife shots for a second, to show you one of my other loves! Climbing photography gives you a whole new view into the human psyche. Being surrounded by climbers out there, you can't help but be swept up by their passion and determination to constantly climb harder and better.
Plus getting to sneak in a little time on the rock yourself = unbeatable. .

A dragon. Not a fancy fire-breathing one, but a dragon nonetheless! This is an Australian Water Dragon (Intellagama lesueurii) and these fantastic lizards can reach up to 90cm long! This one appears to be a male, judging by the robust jaw and the orangey-red flush. Females tend to be paler in colour.Β
That 'plop-splash' sound you might hear when walking along a waterhole/creek might be a turtle or rakali, but it might also be one of these lizards! With a lower body temperature than other reptiles, water dragons like to loaf on branches or logs in the shade but will launch themselves into the water if they feel threatened.

Babies of this species remind me of the South American Common Basilisk - they can also skitter across the water at great speedΒ πŸ˜„βš‘
