  • “HALIYA-is the masked moon goddess, warrior, and protector of women in Ibalon, a section of pre-colonial Philippines. She is strong and adamant as Bulan is weak and submissive. She is depicted as a very lovely young woman with very fair and radiant skin, and having long hair and eyes as dark as midnight. She and Bulan, her twin brother, are the most pursued and fairest beings in the heavens. She wears a mask to hide her beauty. She is a symbol of strength in women. She was convinced by the wind people or Taong Lipod to go down to the waters of the earth to bathe.” When they visited earth, the sea diwata and deity of the Underworld, Bakunawa, became smitten with Bulan’s beauty but he had not noticed her among the mermaids. Enraged by this slight, Bakunawa transformed herself into a giant serpent and vowed revenge by trying to swallow the moon. In doing so, Bakunawa caused a lunar eclipse. Sworn to protect her brother, Haliya declared herself Bakunawa’s archenemy and has fought with the creature ever since. #acrylic on canvas .16x20 inches .available for purchase . .
